Don knows his stuff, he's easy to get along with and overall a really nice guy. He has an impressive repertoire of musical skills and a lifetime of experience in music to draw from. As far as instruments he can play a little bit of everything, he can basically teach you any instrument you'd find in a regular rock band, folk, country, pop, blues etc. He's probably most proficient on the guitar and piano but he also knows quite a lot about vocals. If you struggle with theory he does a great job demystifying some of the fundamentals of music theory that are useful to beginners. Whether you're an absolute beginner or long time musician Don will be able to help you out. Highly recommend.

Can't say enough about Stevie! What an excellent person and playing ability! Had him out for my birthday, played for about 30-40 people for several hours. Energy was high and super fun the entire time. Took song requests from everyone and just took the party and atmosphere to another level! We will absolutely be hiring him again in the future. Pricing and flexibility for our party was perfect! He really catered to what we wanted and even though it rained on us, we made the best of it with Tents set up and as they say The Band Played On!

From the first gig that I worked with Jay and Trackside, they treated me as part of the group as we worked together to create video and photos worthy of a first class regional band. He and the group have always had my requirements as a priority and keep me informed about the things necessary for me to function in My role with the band. Love working with these guys. One of the best local rock bands ever!!

The band sounded great—very together, able to perform in many styles, high energy and great sound. They also were easy to work with, good humor, excited about the show. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing and working with them again!

Xtract Band was phenomenal. They were dressed nice, performed well, what more can you expect. On top of their performance, working with Clint was very easy and very professional, an all around great experience! Everyone had a great time. The music and sound they projected was perfect. I highly recommend Xtract Band for any live performances.

About

Bad Influence, the premier Washington, DC band, has been playing their style of blues-infused, high-energy music since 1988. Ever-growing crowds turn out for the band's scorching hot and sinfully addicting shows, which are charged with a masterful blend of sensuously rough edges wrapped in soulful smoothness, riveting rock currents and potent shots of swing and American roots music. All this is signed, sealed and delivered in a suggestive, in-your-face style guaranteed to captivate even the most stoic of mind, body and spirit. The award-winning Bad Influence features Bob Mallardi on bass and vocals, Hohner endorsed artist Roger Edsall on harp and vocals, Epiphone endorsed artist Michael "Jr" Tash on guitar and vocals, and Sonor endorsed artist David Thaler on the drums.

Joel is an incredible teacher! He helped me and 2 other friends (who also take classes with him around the same time) to put together a band that was playing live shows after 6 months of lessons. All of us were completely novice musicians. He even learned how to play a new instrument, the Andean charango, so he could teach one of our band members how to incorporate it into our playing. Joel's lessons are fun and disciplined. Exactly the combination you want for making progress and staying invested in learning how to play your instrument.

About

I am an R&B artist from Baltimore. I am currently finishing up my first album by multi-platinum producer Herb Middleton. I sing, write song, arrange and produce. I honestly have a gift for melody creation. I also have my own band. We perform songs ranging from classic soul, i.e. Marvin Gaye, Sam Cooke, Eddie Kendricks, Stevie Wonder to contemporary, i.e. Maxwell, D'Angelo, Chris Brown, etc. Most people in the area call my sound "New Age Motown".

Sam is not only a teacher, he is your friend. I was a simple guitar player that wanted to sound good with my band, another dreamer. And Sam convinced me that we had a chance to get there, somewhere. All the skills that you can possibly imagine, experienced on the road and very respected musician, Sam, with only 5 month of class, gave us such a confidence. There is a lot to learn still, and now all the band will have lessons. We are so excited. Just do it as he says.

Billy and co are top notch. I've known Mr. Martin for a long time and he's played many events at my place in a couple different bands. He's a consummate professional and a good dude. FFRD is unique because they don't really sound like any one band. They're a combination of quite a few different genres, people of all ages will get what they do and they are super tight for such a big band. Hire them.

We had a great time when you were at Dogfish. We loved it! Funny but my friend Arlene tried to dance to "Dillon" (her quote!). I hope we get to go back there on the 11th. It was a great trip down memory lane. You guys rock! Sharon

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

      • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
      • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
      • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.
