Hi all, I'm sharing a long review so others know what to expect when they need the same type of service for the first time. The 50-gallon electric water heater in my condo was leaking and needed to be replaced. Walter coordinated same day service while I went to Home Depot to purchase a new water heater and water heater pan. After sending him the order number and Home Depot location, his team picked up the water heater on their way to my condo. David and Melvin arrived as scheduled and were very friendly and professional. The first thing they did was protect the work area with large floor cloths. They explained the installation process step-by-step. Their skill combined with the latest tools in the trade resulted in a very efficient operation and took around 1.5 hours to complete. I paid via credit card and it was processed onsite using their mobile credit card reader. It is now two weeks post installation and I have no problems to report. Out of all the Thumbtack quotes I received, their quote was the highest by a significant percentage, but I still chose Eagle Home because their service comes with a 1-year warranty. I reasoned that they must do quality work if they automatically back it up for a minimum of a year. Other factors in my selection included the high number of positive reviews (that were plumbing specific) and Walter's responsiveness. My only gripe with the service was that the already high quote did not include haul away of the old water heater. Haul away was an additional charge. This was a lessons learned for me to make sure quotes for similar projects in the future include the cost of installation and disposal. I give Eagle Home 5 stars for service and 3.5 stars for cost.

Julian installed an A.O. Smith PXNT-55 electric water heater. He responded promptly (first) to my request on Thumbtack. The specific model selected was based on a couple email exchanges addressing what was in place and my requirements based on the specs of existing equipment and my preference for A.O. Smith products. The day of install he texted me early and arrived punctually. Julian is professional. The removal of old equipment was methodical and install if the new unit clean and neat. The service was also a good value relative to other estimates received. Highly recommended.

Working with Salvation LLC was a wonderful experience. Ernesto and his team are outstanding. In fact, Ernesto found a creative solution to my HVAC/water heater issue that several other HVAC companies had not even considered. The finished installation was beyond my expectations; pre-installation preparation and post-installation cleanup could not have been better. I have had HVAC/water heater work done in the past but Salvation's work was superior to all of these other companies. The work was done at a reasonable price in a timely manner and Ernesto made sure that I understood all that would be involved in the installation. I highly recommend Salvation! I have already scheduled some additional HVAC work with Salvation and they will absolutely be my go-to HVAC company going forward :-)

I spoke to Jon about my pilot light on my water heater that kept going out. Since I dicovered the water heater should not be in a bathroom ( which voided my warranty), he explained why and since it is in a small closet suggested I leave the door open for the air to circulate! This light was going out everyday for the last 3 days. Following Jon's advice the pilot light has stayed lit! I didn't hire him for now, but will definitely contact him for jobs in the future! Thank you so much for your advice Jon, and saving me money!

Brian came in to replace the HVAC unit for a 1-bedroom condo, and had a colleague also replace the hot water heater. Overall, Brian was very responsive, came in and provided a very estimate and quote, and got the work done very quickly. The timeline for the project stretched out a little bit, but some of that was due to the requirements for the building exterior. Overall, excellent service and value, and took the time to make sure the job was done well.

I needed a new water heater (fast!) and was considering going tankless. The people at 24/7 took all the time I needed to go over my options and help me figure out what the best choice for my home was. I ended up going with a highly rated and efficient tank system since the water in my area is quite hard so the added cost of installing a water softener to keep a tankless system running well throughout its intended lifespan pushed that option over my desired budget. The two man team that came to my house were quick and clean! It took less than 4 hours from the time they arrived to my hot water being back on (and I'm including the time it took for the tank to heat up after they installed it). Everything they moved was put back carefully (and correctly!) and the area looks cleaner than when they arrived. They installed, tested, and checked their work. They also attended to little details, like making sure to rinse out any grit and grime from aerators in sink faucets after we turned the water back on and flushed the lines. Great job overall. Would definitely hire them again.

Walter installed a 50 gallon power vented water heater in a basement crawlspace. From the first time i contacted him until the project was complete he was responsive and did what he said he would do. Walter even went out of his way to fit the install into our very busy schedule. He is a true professional and he completed the project on budget. Will be working with him on future projects.

From Herb’s initial phone call, I had a good feeling about Nexgen. He was able to make an initial (and then follow up) diagnosis from pics I texted to him, so he was prepared for the appointment for which he was right on time. He and Freddie couldn’t have been nicer, even spot checking other HVAC stuff at no charge while the tankless water heater was being de-scaled (the job we originally reached out to them for). Will totally keep using them for annual upkeep and anything else that pops up. Highly, highly recommend!!!

Norlan was great, was the quickest and best quote, he advised on his labor separate from the water heater of my choice. He picked up for me and just added to the total. He also pointed out damage to the new water heater from Home Depot and offered to exchange it on the spot which I was thankful for. Did not take the old tank but we did not discuss this before and I had to go to dump anyway. I will use Norlan again and have retained his contact info for future work. By the way, the install seems to be fine and working perfectly.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

  • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
  • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
  • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
  • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
  • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

When is it time to replace a water heater?

Although regular water heater maintenance and water heater repair may extend the life of your hot water heater, it won’t last forever. Most water heaters have a life expectancy of about 10 years. Many water heaters need to be replaced when they’re 8-12 years old — that’s when they start to show signs of fatal wear, such as leaking around the base of the tank. A water heater should be replaced when it fails to sufficiently heat water for the home; if your heater is operating erratically, check first for a blown fuse or a tripped breaker to make sure an electrical issue isn’t causing the problem. Another time to replace a water heater is when you want to upgrade to either a larger model or a more energy-efficient one.

Why is my hot water not working?

The most common complaint among homeowners is that their hot water isn’t working — and the water heater is generally the culprit. Typically, it isn’t making the water as hot as you’d like it to be. When the water isn’t hot enough — or isn’t hot at all — run through this troubleshooting checklist for basic water heater repair tasks:

  • Make sure the power is connected to the heater, then reset the thermostat.
  • If it’s a gas water heater, make sure the pilot light is lit.
  • Raise the temperature setting on the thermostat.

If these stops don’t lead to hot water, it’s time to either check the heating element in an electric water heater or the burner unit and gas control valve in a gas-powered heater. A water heater repair and maintenance company can handle these repair jobs. However, if your hot water heater is eight years or older, it may be time to replace the water heater instead of repairing it.

Who can fix a water heater?

When a water heater stops running effectively, it’s best to hire a water heater repair professional to troubleshoot the problem. Whether it’s a plumbing company that offers water heater repair services or a provider specializing in water heater repair and maintenance, most repair companies offer same-day service as well as weekend and after-hours emergency calls. Usually, water heater repair professionals are experts in both electric and gas systems, as well as tank and tankless heaters, and can repair any kind of unit.

Why is the water in my house not getting hot?

If the water in your house is not getting hot, it may be time for water heater repair. Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400, depending on the problem and materials. Competent homeowners may also be able to try DIY fixes, whether they have a traditional gas or electric water heater or a tankless gas or electric heater. Troubleshooting the different issues that can arise with each of the styles requires some knowledge of how they operate and what red flags to look out for. For a natural gas water heater, the first step is to check whether the pilot light has gone out. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s directions if you want to relight it yourself. If you smell gas, stop everything and call your gas company — the smell could signal a dangerous gas leak. If your household’s water is not getting hot enough, you can try increasing the temperature on the water heater’s front dial above the standard setting of 120 degrees; for safety, always turn off electricity to the unit before adjusting temperatures. If you keep running out of hot water, your household may simply need a higher-capacity water heater, so consider upgrading. Quick professional fixes include replacing the thermostat or heating elements and cleaning and repairing the thermocouple.
