Planning ahead

Things to know before you get started.
6 Steps to Professional Wood Refinishing
  1. 1. Select the furniture

Identify which pieces of furniture require refinishing and are also worth the time, effort and cost. Pieces that are burned, water damaged, or have missing pieces may not be suitable for refinishing.

  2. 2. Do some research

Find out if it’s best to remove any prior treatments and strip the furniture back to its original state to ensure the new application adheres correctly.

  3. 3. Check up on the supplies

When searching for a professional, find out what types of tools and products are used to both strip and apply refinishing applications. Ask how your furniture will be prepared with pre-treatments.

  4. 4. Get proposals

Once you select at least two professional services, request a proposal that outlines in detail the scope of the work that will be done and what is guaranteed.

  5. 5. Negotiate a contract

After you select your pro, review the contract to ensure all details are not only outlined but reviewed and agreed upon.

  6. 6. Be careful

Once the professional service provider is actually in your home, be sure to ask how long it should be before you touch or step on treated wood before it is completely dry.
