We recently had the hardwood floors and carpet stained at our office. Ed Bilo came and gave us a free quote and his team finished on time and at the quoted cost. We also had our hand railings French polished which is something we wouldn't have thought of on our own. Would definitely recommend Ed Bilo and his team to anyone who needs Carpet Removal done and floor care done!

There are no superlatives to explain the awesome experience we had with Matt. On time every single day, worked all weekend as well and was such a wonderful craftsman. He removed all our old wood floor skim coated it and laid wood look porcelain tile in both the living and dining rooms. It is gorgeous! He is meticulous and professional as well as reasonable in his price! I will recommend him to everyone I know and I am already arranging for another job for him at my house! I can rate him excellent plus in every aspect . Photos to follow tomorrow! Thank you so much Matt ❤️

We had a fantastic experience working with Julio and his team. Their initial quote was not only quick and lowest, but it included things that other companies wanted to charge extra for like sanding stairs and quarter-round. Everyone that came to our house for quotes and work were very professional and friendly and all of the details were considered. Our old house came with a few interesting challenges for them in certain tight corners and un-level surfaces, but they made it all work beautifully without missing a beat. They even finished on the low end of their initial time estimate and their cuts were so clean we had flooring left over to return for money back. They even take PayPal, which was incredibly convenient. We can't recommend them enough and will definitely be using them in the future.

I live in a home that is roughly 70 years old and the original hardwood floors were coming to the end of their life. I had a couple of referrals from family and friends come out to give me estimates before using RJA floors and they were simply way to expensive. I used Thumbtack and found Robert (Owner of RJA Floors) in seconds. He got back to me letting me know that he would like the business and thinks he could do it within my budget. He came out to look at the floors a week later and we set a time to get the work done. He was very professional throughout the entire project. Every time that I called Robert, he picked up. The work took a little longer than expected, but that was because of the house, not Robert and his crew. I highly recommend Robert and have done so already to friends and family. Great work, I will use him again.

Very skillful and completed the work to pull cable up two floors to my attic. They even patched the drywall openings and sanded them so they were ready to be painted. Will be hiring them again for other projects I might have!

Brandon Construction was very reasonably priced and the quality of work was excellent. I was so impressed with their professionalism and prompt service that instead of one job, I had them completed seven different jobs ranging from hardwood floor replacement (3 rooms), widening doors, opening a wall to add counter space and painting. All works was done efficiently - most within one day for each job. When I had to select materials (granite/ flooring, etc.) they recommended vendors that have quality materials and knowledgeable staff as well as reasonable pricing. Every step of the process was easy and the results were amazing. I am so pleased!!!! I would highly recommend them for any home improvement needs. They are really great to work with.

Hugo and his team installed 1000 Sq feet of heavy duty wide plank laminate, they did such an exceptional job we added refinishing of our hardwood floors and again their work was flawless. The stairs were pine which required a considerable amount of additional labor to resemble the stain on oak but they put in the extra time to make it right. Costa Floors did an ever all excellent job, I highly recommend!

I hired E.Y. Construction to replace a window in my master bathroom, install marble tile with a mosaic inlay on all walls, porcelain tile in the floor, a onyx river rock on the custom shower floor, and granite on the shower threshold and half wall. I hired Naser because all his references had nothing but good things to say about him.... Wow they were right. All the workers were very professional, neat, and paid attention to detail. The bathroom window and tile job looks stunning. I am confident it was done above standards and will last well beyond my lifetime.

We hired Erick's service for deep cleaning our house prior to listing it for sale. Previous experiences with other cleaning services have been hit or miss so we were a bit anxious, given that a good cleaning job is really important for the house to show well for sale. I cannot praise Erick's team of two women (his family in part) enough for the cleaning job they did in our house. I will give you specific examples which portray their exceptional work - 1. we recently touched up paint on the walls and a few drops probably spilled on the floor. His crew went down on the floor to scrub minute drops off while vacuuming/mopping our hardwood floor; 2. They took out the glass receptacles off the light fixtures and washed them to make them appear new (and they never were so clean when we lived in the house!). 3. They opened the windows and dusted and wiped off dirt from the outside of the window. 4. Bathrooms and kitchen with granite counter top were spotless and shiny! We believe the house shows very well to make the best impression for potential buyers. I will strongly recommend Erick and his team for cleaning services, and actually like the fact that it is a small, family run venture as opposed to the large scale cleaning services. SLV

I used Thumbtack to find someone to install crown molding in my condo. I live in an old building with uneven walls and floors, so I knew it wouldn't be an easy job. Mr Armaza contacted me immediately, came over within a few days and with 24 hours had sent me a proposal which I accepted. The job was scheduled to take 3 days, but he and his colleague, Rudy, competed the project in two days. As I said, I live in a downtown DC condo, and I had arranged for parking and access to an electrical outlet out side. Unfortunately, our building engineer is a grumpy, unfriendly person and after I had left he wouldn't allow Mr Armaza to use the electrical outlet. I was furious with the engineer, but Mr Armaza took it much better than I did. I wish they would have called me at work so I could have called the General Manager about the outlet (she was surprised when I told her what had happened). Mr Armaza and Rudy are very professional, have great attention to detail and take pride in their work. I am hoping that the bad experience with my building management won't prevent them from returning for other projects I will have at a later date. In sum, there was great communication, they completed the job early, stayed within budget, were clean, courteous and professional throughout and didn't mind my two cats offering furry assistance. I would rehire them in a heartbeat. I am thrilled to have the beautiful crown molding and baseboards I have wanted for many years. Thank you very much!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
