ESL (English as a Second Language) Lessons

My first student was my severely dyslexic sister who was in 8th grade reading at 1st grade level. For years teachers told me she needed to read more and she was eventually catch up. Nothing worked until I found the Orton-Gillingham method. Not only is she able to read now but she is addicted to a series of novels! I am trained and certified in the Barton System which one of the most comprehensive Orton-Gillingham based programs. The Orton-Gillingham method is the golden standard in teaching reading to children and adults with dyslexia. I have taken Lindamood-Bell's Lips training workshop on phonemic awareness for my most severely dyslexic students. I have also taken Susan Barton's 6-day graduate level Screening for Dyslexia seminar. In addition to my O.G.-based training, I have taken countless Linguistics and Structured Word Inquiry courses to expose my students to a scientific approach to orthography. Every word has a story and meaningful reasons for the way it is spelled, even so-called "sight words!" Using SWI, students use critical thinking, expand their vocabulary, and improve reading comprehension. Signs of Dyslexia: - Terrible spelling (Number 1 sign of Dyslexia) - Unable to sound out unknown words or nonsense words - Unable to retain spelling words from spelling tests - Slow choppy reading - Relies on context clues when reading - Makes guesses when reading I tutor all students (ages 6 to adult) online using a screen sharing software. My hourly rate applies to 55-minute sessions. I look forward to hearing from you!See more

YOU CAN TEACH a 4-7-YEAR-OLD TO READ AND I CAN HELP YOU! Three Types of Adult Support I Provide for Teaching Young Children: 1. Private coaching for parents or teachers, on an hourly basis on Zoom or in your home in the Seattle area ($60 per hour) 2. In-home consultations for parents where I can help you set up a nurturing and effective learning environment for your child ($100 per hour in the Seattle area *) 3. Seminars for parents, teachers, families, communities, churches, homeschool groups, PTAs, and friends who CAN teach 4-7-year-old children. Learn to read in a step by step, systematic, simple way! ($200 per hour) To be successful, parents and educators will find it invaluable to know: • How children learn • That 0-6-year-olds have an absorbent mind *, through which they effortlessly absorb information • That children love to learn • That there is a dependable, step by step reading sequence to follow that can empower anyone to teach • How to use hands-on reading materials that are like a series of card games so that children can almost teach themselves to read. See that these materials are tailored to the needs of young children • How to establish simple routines at home or school of 10-15 minutes per day where practicing or “playing with the materials” enables children to successfully read! • It is not difficult for most children to learn to read if they have the right tools and adults who understand a simple sequence. As a Montessori teacher with 25+ years' experience teaching reading and writing to children 4-7 years old, including my own six children, I am passionate about showing adults how they CAN teach children to read. Let’s start a revolution in learning! What I offer to Parents, Teachers, and All Who Would Support Children: 1. I provide private consultations and seminars for parents and teachers. If this is done in connection with tutoring, it will maximize the tutoring opportunity for children. Parents will be more conscious of developmental needs and will be more engaged. They can better understand and so support the child's efforts with hands-on reading materials. Simple feedback and demonstrations to you as your child is learning can be a great help. 2. I also provide seminars in which I communicate all of the above in further detail about how children learn and also lay out a clear sequence of how to teach reading. This can be step by step training for parents, teachers, and others! I use power points and other presentation materials to give detailed instructions about how to teach. I demonstrate the use of the materials and make recommendations. Understand how children learn and how to ensure the building of a successful reading foundation. *Please note I charge transportation fee of $1.00 per mile for transportation.See more

FAQs

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

Nationally, the average cost for a Spanish tutor ranges from $30 to $40 per hour. The cost for a Spanish tutor can vary depending on whether you choose private instruction or group lessons.

Geographic location can affect cost; tutors in expensive cities and pricier regions command higher rates than in rural areas and small towns.

The experience and education of the Spanish tutor will also affect their rates. For adult education, many people learning Spanish choose to join a Spanish school with tutors who teach group classes and also offer private tutoring for students. Typically ,these schools charge a monthly tuition that gives students access to a set number of classes per week, with private tutoring available at an additional cost.

One example of an average cost is a monthly tuition of $200, which includes five 90-minute group lessons per month. Monthly tuition can vary depending on the school and the teachers.

Short-term workshops are also a way to learn Spanish. Students may work with a Spanish tutor and group of other students at their skill level for a short period of time. One example of an average price is $100 for an eight-week course, with one 60-minute group class per week.
