Terisse is such an intuitive and loving person and that really shows in her work. Her Spiritual Soul Counseling Guidance was right on point as she channels all her information from the soul. Once I read it, it provided immediate clarity as to what was preventing me from healing. Her Energetic Healing work cleared my chakras and allowed my body the relaxation and comfort enough to begin to heal itself. After each one of these treatments I felt as if I had woken up from a long and peaceful sleep and I felt lighter afterwards! The last treatment that I had was the Healing Through Creative Art PlayShop, and this is what truly allowed me to express the energy that had been stuck inside of me. The process was very intense and had me face to face with some very negative energy I was holding inside, but at the end of all of that my spirit felt lighter and I was able to move on. Throughout the process, whenever I consulted with Terisse, she was kind, patient and never judged anything I said or did in my personal life. She was the perfect healer and mentor!

I had selected a lady to officiate our ceremony a year in advance, yet the more I interacted with her the more I knew she was not right (she was not who my husband to be and I thought she was). I tried to make it work as we had already done so much with her in preparation--but I intuitively felt she was wrong for our ceremony. I found the courage to tell my husband and we let her go one month before the ceremony! I knew there was someone out there that would flow easily with us--and instantly we get us----that is when I found Joy:) Joy is amazing and I found her via social media and trusted my intuition that she was the one for my husband to be and I's wedding. It was a picture of her showcasing her deep soulful eyes that instantly convinced me she would be the one for our ceremony. Sounds strange but very true---I could see she would "get" what we were about and be the best to help us make it happen. When we spoke about the flow of the wedding and the many aspects we wanted to include she was extremely helpful and insightful and intuitive about us---confirming what I had already seen in her picture. We connected---she is a very special human being and an extraordinary officiator. I had made the time for the ceremony to be 10am a year before the date---I was pressured by my Mom to change it to a later time--but I felt that it was the right time--I could not explain at the time why----and once I talked with Joy--I found out why--10am was the only way she would be able to make our ceremony as she had another at 2pm (2 hours from ours):)!!! She also agreed to help us even amidst her saying goodbye to her elderly father (driving from VA to FLA to be with him). She has a wonderful heart and intuitive grace. So my experience with Joy is one of serependity, joy (just like her name), love, and grace. The kind of person and presence you would want to officiate your special day.

Two years ago I started treatment with Martha for anxiety/depression issues and a life that felt too constricted. During this time I’ve been able to stay off medication and to try dance and yoga classes that have been a joy. Beyond this, I have gained an understanding of Five Element theory that has guided my approach to each season. Martha is a compassionate and intuitive healer who uses acupuncture but also herbs, stones, and real listening with patients who heal and grow due to her care.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is naturopathic medicine?

Naturopathic medicine is classified as an alternative healing method, but licensed naturopathic doctors share some of the same academic background as conventional medical doctors and can often prescribe some medications. According to the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AANP), naturopathic medicine is holistic care that addresses a wide range of problems including (but not limited to) allergies, chronic pain, digestive issues, hormonal imbalances, obesity, respiratory conditions, heart disease, fertility problems, menopause, adrenal fatigue, cancer, fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. Naturopathic medicine aims to strengthen and empower the body and its organs to heal itself through low-force interventions. Here are some examples of the type of medical services often provided by naturopathic doctors, as cited by the AANP:

    • Clinical and laboratory diagnostic testing
    • Nutritional medicine
    • Botanical medicine
    • Naturopathic physical medicine (including naturopathic manipulative therapy)
    • Hygiene
    • Counseling
    • Minor surgery
    • Homeopathy
    • Acupuncture
    • Intravenous and injection therapy
    • Naturopathic obstetrics (natural childbirth)

What is Reiki and how does it work?

Reiki is a type of wellness bodywork, often referred to as energy work, that originated in Japan. Reiki practitioners offer this traditional healing technique with the intent of manipulating the flow of energy through the client’s body. Unlike massage, Reiki uses minimal — if any — pressure, focusing on stimulating energy flow rather than working the soft tissue and muscles. This movement of energy is done to improve mental, emotional and physical health. Reiki is touted for its stress relief and ability to ease tension. It can also improve mental clarity, release stress and tension, manage pain, or help with spiritual growth. It is said that Reiki practitioners act as a channel for a universal life force to help support a client’s natural ability to heal. Reiki sessions often last 30 to 90 minutes, with prices varying based on session length, background and experience of the provider, and where you live. Nationally, the average price range for a Reiki session is $60-$80.

    Can naturopathic doctors prescribe medication?

Licensed naturopathic doctors can prescribe some pharmaceutical medication. Naturopathic doctors complete academic training similar to that of conventional physicians: a bachelor’s degree with a focus on pre-med studies, followed by a four-year residential naturopathic medical program whose first two years have a similar foundation to that of a conventional medical school. After completing their studies, they must pass a post-doctoral exam. Although licensed naturopathic physicians are able to prescribe medication, they usually focus on prevention rather than treatment of symptoms. A naturopathic doctor will offer a holistic approach to your care that encompasses your mental, physical and emotional health. While they will prescribe medication as needed to treat illness, they are also likely to be creating shifts in your lifestyle and nutrition to effect deeper changes in your body’s response to illness.

How long do naturopathic doctors go to school?

Like conventional physicians, naturopathic doctors undergo rigorous academic and clinical training prior to practice. Typically naturopathic doctors go to school for eight years. There are currently 20 states in the U.S. that provide licensing for naturopathic doctors. According to the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians, a naturopathic doctor must complete a bachelor’s degree and an accredited four-year residential naturopathic medical program, and pass an extensive postdoctoral board examination, the Naturopathic Physicians Licensing Examinations (NPLEX), in order to receive a license or registration to practice medicine.

The first two years of the residential naturopathic medical program cover many of the same areas of study as conventional medical schools. Naturopathic doctors provide primary patient holistic care. The goal of naturopathic medicine is preventative care and a focus on low force intervention healing methods. This can include natural medicines, acupuncture, hydrotherapy, homeopathy and much more. Naturopathic doctors often work in tandem with conventional medical doctors, as the two practices complement one another.

How do you find a good naturopath?

It’s important not to get misled by the title “naturopath” when searching for a naturopathic doctor. A naturopathic doctor is a licensed professional, while anyone who so desires can call themselves a naturopath. A naturopathic doctor has completed eight years of schooling and is licensed to provide high-quality medical care. When searching for a naturopathic doctor, a good place to start is by researching your state’s licensing and regulatory body for that profession.

Currently, 20 U.S. states license the practice of naturopathic medicine. For those seeking holistic, body-centered healing solutions, a naturopathic doctor can be a good fit. They use natural medicines as well as treatments such as electrotherapy and ayurvedic medicine to encourage the body to heal. Once you have determined a list of naturopathic physicians who are licensed in your state, look for reviews, ask for referrals, and interview the physician in person or by phone to find the right care provider for your health needs.
