Mr. Pow is a true mathematician. He definitely knows ALL levels of math there is to know and has the ability to teach/tutor clients of all grades and levels. My son is in 6th grade and was struggling in math... after just a couple of sessions my son was back on track. Mr. Pow was able to identify if/when my son didn't understand something and tackle the subject in different ways until my son was successful with the concepts. We are still having Mr. Pow drop in from time to time just to confirm our kid is still on the right track. He's worth the time and money... we highly recommend him to all.

My son's tutor has worked with him for more than a year transitioning from elementary school to middle school. The tutor showed great flexibility in subject areas and was able to help in virtually any school subject including English, science, math, world studies, and French. My son's improvement and added self confidence has been fantastic!

I met Lauren while she worked as an elementary school teacher at my children's parochial school in southern California. She is an excellent teacher in the classroom, providing sound instruction on the school's curriculum, as well as positive feedback to her students. My middle daughter struggled in elementary school. After having Lauren as her teacher, I hired her to tutor my daughter's during the years of 5th-7th grade. My daughter struggled in several areas including: math, reading comprehension, study skills and writing. Lauren met with my daughter in our home on a weekly basis. She used the curriculum that the parochial school provided, as well as, she incorporated different learning modalities, which assisted my daughter in the understanding the various concepts. Today, my daughter is a senior at a university back east, majoring in kinesiology and will graduate in May 2016. I believe Lauren gave my daughter the skills and the confidence she needed to be successful in school. Thank you again Lauren!!! T.S Garden Grove, CA

My roommate and I contacted Julia to teach us basic Russian for our travels to Ukraine and Moldova this summer. To date, Julia has provided us with proper instruction, lesson plans, and homework. She has become our mentor and very reliable resource as we prepare for our journey. Julia is very professional and can present her material on all levels, which I can attest to since she teaches the two of us at the same time. She is a kind and genuine person who is always upbeat. It is with great privilege to recommend Julia’s services to anyone who is looking to explore or further their understanding of the Russian language.

Mr. Glass is a wonderful middle school math teacher! Both of my daughters have difficulties with understanding math and require a teacher who is patient, understanding and willing to take the extra time needed to be sure their students comprehend the lesson. Mr. Glass is that type of teacher! He also makes learning fun and can be a little silly with the kids, which seems to help kids feel more at ease with asking questions in the classroom and admitting when they don't understand something. My girls felt more confident in his classroom, and actually ENJOYED taking his five week summer school class!

My child just started working with Nema. He is thoughtful, compassionate, and aware, as well as highly skilled in the teaching high school math. He truly makes an effort to connect with the student in a way that resonates. He is building confidence in this student as well as teaching concepts and verifying comprehension. Nema is organized and analyzes what will be best for the student going forward. He is also a very nice soul. Here's looking forward to a strong school year.

Kathy has been tutoring my daughter in Math for over two years My daughter has dyslexia and math is just as difficult as reading for her. Kathy recognizes my daughter's strengths and builds on them, she understand her weaknesses and boosts her confidence. Kathy knows how to keep the focus of a child and make the learning process both fun and challenging. She teaches through multi-sensory learning, acknowledging that what may work for one child does not necessarily work for another. She uses games, pictures, stories, rhymes and experience to help a child learn and understand a lesson, not just learn it by rote. My daughter enjoys and looks forward to working with Kathy each week.

Hey there, reader. Please allow me the chance to help you find some of the best math tutoring out there! I met Colin as my fun and gutsy voice student, but I've done just as much learning from him! It all started when one of my younger students needed some additional tutoring in trig and algebra. At first I was afraid that with his impeccable GPA in advanced math that he might be out of touch with teaching the basics. It pleasantly surprised me to learn that Colin's confidence in his math abilities doesn't just come from his own track record of being hit up by top GOVERNMENT recruiters, it comes from his strong desire to share the wealth of math knowledge he has to offer to ALL levels. That includes mine. I used to be a wannabe math whiz in middle school, but a few bad teachers who refused to let me take challenging coursework changed that. Colin's help with the Integral Calculus that I never got to take changed that, teaching me that just because most people have bad EXPERIENCES with math, it doesn't mean they are bad STUDENTS. Colin can help ANYONE, even a Voice Teacher like me. Now I use Summation and Calculus based metaphors to explain vocal concepts to my students, and THEY get it too!! It always gets a kick out of Colin when we go out for drinks and karaoke! Colin is a clear choice! Start honing your math skills BEYOND what you thought possible. Start TODAY! My only regret is not having more time to explore my RENEWED passion for math with him, and not having met him BEFORE my crummy high school math teachers.

After many years in private school, I decided to give public school a try. I quickly learned that even in a great school district - with overpopulated classes and overworked teachers - my child was being deprived of the basic tools to build a solid educational foundation. I set out to find someone who could help reinforce these basics that I remember learning that are missing in today’s curriculum. Ms. Judy far exceeded my expectations. From day one, she figured out how to engage my 3rd grader and make learning fun. In fact, she quite often says Ms. Judy taught me this or that...I haven’t heard her say that about her school teacher all year!!! After only 3 sessions, I’m more than pleased. She’s also taken time to communicate with my 3rd grader’s teachers to ensure that she is reinforcing their current curriculum. If you are looking for someone to help your kids build that solid educational foundation, look no further than Ms. Judy!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

    • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
    • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
    • National average cost for a geometry home tutor: $50-$60 per hour.
    • National average cost for a math home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
    • National average cost for reading and writing home tutor: $40-$60 per hour.
    • National average cost for an SAT home tutor: $70 per hour.
    • National average cost for an ACT home tutor: $70-$100 per hour.
