Francisco and his team were truly excellent and exceptional. They weeded a large yard (almost two acres), planted several perennials, shrubs and trees, and put down mulch. They were highly professional, punctual and responsive to my needs. My yard looked incredibly better. I would definitely use them again. A real pleasure to do business with them.

I recently moved to a wooded lot. Although I was not aware of any imminent threats, I knew I needed some tree trimming. Daniel showed up early to provide an estimate. He walked the lot with me and pointed out the problems areas, including some issues that I was unaware of. He provided a competitive quote, and told me that his crew could do the work that day. I agreed, and a 5-man crew arrived and worked all day - they even came back the following day to finish up. They did exactly what he said they would do, without issue, and cleaned up the yard as if they were never there. I definitely recommend them.

David did an awesome job in a little over 2 hours. We had really tall weeds, grass, foliage and even a new tree that was over 6’ tall that needed to go. The price was very fair, and now we can walk in our yard again.

I used Jose to do a spring clean up of my yard along with planting a tree. Jose was very quick to respond to my questions and get me a quote. Overall he did a very good job and charged a fair price for the job. I would definitely use him again in the future.

Maynor and his team came and did our estimate and then his team came two days later to complete the work. We had two trees cut down and a ton of landscaping in the front and back. They were fast, courteous, efficient, and went above and beyond what I expected. We will definitely be using them again for our landscaping/ tree service needs. I highly recommend them.

Our organization had a large number of trees and debris that needed to be hauled away and cut down. The appropriate equipment was out on site and Ed had the project done in record time since it consisted of about 2.5 acres that needed to be cleared with brush needing to be removed as well. Scope of work was removal of trees/brush and debris and also leveling the land to make sure there was the right drainage. Project took 4 days to be completed and I couldn't be more happy with the service and the customer service that I always received since I did call Ed in the late evening and he always made a point to answer and return calls. Will be referring to our other commercial clients!!

These guys were great. Right on time at 8:30 AM and got right to work trimming and properly pruning my 25ft Crape Myrtle and were very accommodating when I asked them to cut down one large bush as well. They did a great job with the tree and and also cleaned up the yard and alley behind my house. Looks better than when they arrived :) Highly recommend them.

After waiting since November to have a contractor come out to clean my gutter. I gave up and tried to locate another contractor. After several replies on Thumbtack, I decided on Reinaldo Torres of Del Ray Landscaping. First thing, he was in the Alexandria area. Many contractors are too far and feel it is not worth their while to travel for a small job. Second thing, its a landscaping business that does gutter cleaning. Great!! My neighbor has tree with limbs overhanging on my roof that traditional gutter cleaners will not touch. Third thing, his quote was inline with the others as far as the gutter cleaning. I did not mention the tree at the time, but the quote for cleaning my gutter was very reasonable. I contacted Reinaldo on Saturday, New Years Eve. He came out the same day in which I explained I wanted my roof swept and gutter cleaned. At that time, I asked if he would be willing to prune the branches overhanging my roof. He stated that would not be a problem for an additional/reasonable fee. We scheduled an appointment for two days later, Monday. It was raining on Monday. Reinaldo, called that morning and explained it was not a good day due to the weather. I understood and we scheduled for the next Saturday. I then looked at the weather for that weekend, and there was a possibility of snow and cold later that week. I called Reinaldo back and asked if he could come out Wednesday, January 4th, after 3:00 PM when I was off work. No problem. Reinaldo and a friend came out Wednesday around 3:30PM. They apologized for being late for they had mechanical issues on the work truck. Most contractors would have canceled. Not Reinaldo, he put a ladder on his family mini-van and came out. Taking about dedication and only 30 min late!!! Reinaldo and his friend, Nelson, did a great job with the tree pruning, roof sweeping, and cleaning out my gutter. They cleaned up after and everything looked great. I am very happy with the service and definitely will be using Del Ray Landscaping again!!! John McCauley Alexandria, VA

Hayden did a great job. He was friendly and pleasant to work with. His price was very reasonable. Hayden discussed the work to be done, and then completed the work in exactly the way he described. He was able to schedule the work quickly and completed it when he said he would. I would recommend hiring Hayden if you need a tree or trees removed!!

We had some problems with our irrigation system. Carlos came out the next day to look it over and give us a quote, and even fixed one thing while he was there. When he came to do the work three days later, he was on time, explained what he was doing, and recommended some other adjustments to improve the irrigation. He fixed the two zones that didn't work, adjusted some heads, and installed two new sprayers. Our plants are so happy now! I would call JP Landscaping again for other outdoor work we need.

They were just great. A lifesaver. Tim understood immediately what I wanted and his crew was pleasant, friendly and efficient. They got a little delayed because of bad weather which wasn't their fault. But they have taken a huge burden off my shoulders by making our lawn look neat and trim, with massive weeding, edging, mulching, tree trimming and planting. And they are keeping it up, another blessing for me. Highly recommend.

Alonsso and his crew have been absolutely phenomenal! He has clearly communicated, helped with ideas, has worked quickly and above all is a genuine person who has not tried to up sell! We have had his company remove TONS of plants, shrubs and trees, transfer some of them to new locations, plant multiple items, do a spring cleaning and mow and maintain our lawn and landscaping!! I would highly recommend Alonsso and his company for any of your landscaping needs!

Our concrete driveway was in need of serious repair. We had a concern over a tree next to the drive and possible roots under the drive. Chris Harvey was contacted to look at the repair job and also to work with a representative from Care of Trees to make sure that any work on the drive would not damaged the tree. Chris got a crew in, the took out the old concrete, took all of it away. Laid an iron grid and had new concrete poured. The work was done very well, the drive looks great. We are very pleased with the outcome. The price was we felt reasonable and it was a pleasure to work with Chris. We have also asked him to look at some other work that we need on our property.

Cannot say enough good things about Ernesto and his team. Very professional, provided a solid and competitive quote, and took very good care during the process of removing a giant holly tree from my yard. Stayed in touch, and now is in the process of landscaping my front yard and back yard - giving me at-retail value cost of bushes, and helping to brainstorm through ideas. See attached photos for before and after tree removal, very well done! Thank you!

My initial experience with Mr. Litman was when I had a tree removed from my house that had fallen during a storm. Most recently, he has been doing repairs on a rental property - including painting and removal of trash left by tenants. I am very please with his work and would recommend him to others.

Their quoted price for tree removal was nearly half of the quotes I received from others. They came in, worked very quickly and efficiently, and also pointed out some other issues we may have with other trees down the road.

I looked around for about a week to find someone to get rid of an old bedroom set for me. I agreed to work with Dale after getting his quote and reading reviews of his previous work on Thumbtack. I am extremely happy with my decision and Dale's work. We agreed on a time, but I called Dale when my scheduled changed and asked if he could come earlier. He agreed, and got to my house sooner than I thought he would. Very professional and friendly service, and I will definitely use his tree service very soon.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.
