Jose did a fantastic job refinishing our ceiling and daughter's playroom. He was on time and professional, but he also went above and beyond in terms of the work. He took care of a minor plumbing issue around the wet bar he removed and told me "don't call the plumber, they'll charge you and arm and leg—I'll take care of it." Then he just stubbed the pipes, took care of it and didn't ask for any more money. I paid him a little on top anyways. Because he's a pro and he deserved it. I would hire 100 Joses to remodel and paint my house right now. I'm using other contractors and wishing he did it all. He just does really awesome drywall.

Had a privacy fence installed and we are very happy that we decided on Rojas General Contracting to do the work. They finished in the time they estimated and the we couldn't be happier with how the fence turned out. Very hard workers and very nice people as well. Thanks!

These guys were great. They did the job they quoted and then some. They communicated well when we had to wait on the weather to clear. We will be hiring them to do more work cabling at least one tree and keeping up with tree maintenance in the future. They were nice guys and kind to our kids. Don't hesitate to hire them.

They helped me out on short notice, after we had waited weeks for another contractor who kept giving me the runaround. They took care with the place, covering the floors they’d be walking on as well as certain areas in the kitchen. I highly recommend them.

We had two double windows replaced, a plate glass bathroom window replaced with an acrylic glass block window, and had a half moon window removed and replaced with lap siding on the exterior and sheetrock on the interior. The work was done quickly and expertly - could not have asked for a better first time experience with a private contractor! We highly recommend Marcus!

In North Missouri it is hard to get contractors to show up, let alone do a quality job. I was pleasantly surprised when I found TMC. They did a quality paint job on the house with minimal amount of supervision. Larry was very easy to work with and showed the utmost in customer service skills.

Jared and his crew built a wonderful deck using composite decking that we had purchased through Cargo Largo. The assembly of the product was unusual and scared off a few contractors. Jared was confident that he could make it work and he did. He found a compatible product for the fascia and kick plates. He also color matched paint for the posts. We added a small deck and stairs off the side of the house to the original bid. Jared was clear about the additional cost and time. They worked around weather and a few problems that were uncovered. They had to leave one day before they could rework a railing that was out of line. He pointed it out and assured us that it would be redone. I'm not sure I would have noticed. We are very pleased with the decks, and felt that they did excellent work for a very reasonable price.

Dick Ray came out to my parents house and fixed their AC unit, after multiple other companies said it needed to be replaced. The unit has worked perfectly ever since. They were beyond friendly and professional throughout the entire experience. They let my parents know what their options were and kept them up to date throughout the entire process. So glad we decided to get another opinion. :)

I hired Jim to install an electrical outlet in my home where there was not one. First, let me say that Jim was prompt to respond to my service request. I scheduled an appointment for him to come to my home to assess the job and provide me with an estimate. Jim arrived promptly, quoted a very fair price, and came ready to do the job. I hired him on the spot even though I had an appointment set for another professional to give me an estimate. Jim is very professional, yet personable, and efficient in his trade. The install was neat and clean, and Jim was careful to cleanup behind himself. I will definitely hang on to Jim's contact information and consider him for future home projects, as he is a general contractor and experienced in various construction trades. It should be clear by now that I highly recommend Jim Mowrey, owner of Kustom Remodeling. You won't be sorry. I'm sure not!

Ray built me the kitchen I had "in my head". It's perfect. He was flexible and patient as we worked through the design. When I saw ideas on Pinterest or Houzz, I sent them to him and he always said "Yes, I can build that." I have a well built, custom kitchen for a fraction of what other designers/contractors/big box stores would cost ... hidden microwave cabinet, custom broom cabinet, custom shelving for 9 x 13 pans, platters and cookie sheets, pull out vegetable baskets, hidden towel storage, hidden trash, extra deep upper cabinets for large plates. Do yourself a favor and let him build it. I like his kitchen cabinets better than the Martha Stewart cabinets from Home Depot that we used in a different part of the house. There is nothing wrong with the Martha Stewart cabinets, they too are well made and gorgeous ... they were also significantly more expensive than Ray's and the design process at Home Depot was more cumbersome. He was willing to come to my house on weekends and in snow. He even made a second trip on Mother's day just to let me re-check the color. Re-check. I had already approved it, then got nervous and wanted another look. We have done quite a few projects in this house: basement galley kitchen, 2 bathrooms, and a complete gut and rebuild of the master bedroom and bath. I am a seasoned DIYer and remodel person. I know when someone is trying to make a job easier for themselves instead of perfect for you. I would hire Ray again in a heartbeat. He is by far the most conscientious worker we have had in our house.

Matt was very prompt, communicated well and was able to meet me the same day. He was knowledgable about our project and familiar with the permit process. Although we were unable to hire him at this time due to a different complication, we would have been very comfortable having him as a contractor. If we have any future projects, he will be the first person we call!

Job: Business startup/tenant finish in Shawnee Kansas What Went Well: Had a plan, had funds, how hard can it be... (Hard!)Started with City Planning, immediately determined that I was lost and in over my head, I needed expert help and needed it now! Looked for Architect and read the following profile for Bob Del Popolo: No project too small to bring your dream to reality. I pride myself with on time and with in budget and have worked with a multitude of General Contractors in the Kanas City area. I specialize if you want one stop shopping with the Design+Build experience domestically and internationally. My fees are competitive but offer a strong sense of integrity, leadership and communication skills. All true! Kevin knows his trade well. He charges a very reasonable price for tiling jobs, and his work is excellent. The catch is that Kevin is stretched very thin and is not good at time management. However, it would be unfair for me to elaborate on Kevin's tardiness without speaking highly of his skill. We've hired tiling professionals from Thumbtack before, and they were downright AWFUL. Kevin's work really does redeem him, and for his technical expertise I would recommend him.

Excellence to details, excellence of how she handles her contractor and she is born to design. Karin is very good at listening of what you need as a homeowner and then coming u with a plan of how to give you what you want in your budget without loosing functionality! Karin Ross and Building Pro (the contractor Karin works with) recently did my master bathroom and was nothing less but spectacular! Every time I had a question, Karin was available quickly and took care of what I needed. Remodeling can be frustrating but with Karin's support and professionalism my master bathroom looks like it just come out of a magazine. Thank you again!

We had a window well that flooded water into our basement and we were under a lot of stress trying to figure out what to do with it. The last time something like that happen we had a contractor come out and dry out the carpet but leave the pad wet and basically ruined our pad. I was referred to yeti restoration and they came out and were very professional gave me a good price and could do the work the same day to prevent further damage. I actually trusted this company to be be there with my wife and kids without me there. That says a lot! I refer yeti restoration to everybody now!

Don’t let the name UltraClean fool you. They do more than clean. Michael and his crew pride themselves in doing a variety of home improvement projects. I hired them for interior painting, deck repair, staining, sheet rock repair and basic installation. I experienced Michael’s true sincerity and professionalism throughout the job. I was impressed by his commitment during the entire process and quickly resolving some minor issues that cropped up. He has vast knowledge, experience and solutions for an assortment of home projects. UltraClean provided me with so many services at a very reasonable price. I highly recommend them for an economical home improvement project.

Todd knows what he's doing, and he did exactly what we asked for. We had him build a small add-on to our house, and we knew in general what we wanted, but we expected Todd to make the decisions about how to make it happen, and he did. It turned out exactly the way we pictured it in our heads before starting. We will definitely use Todd again if we have contracting projects in the future.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.
