About
I have 31 years of playing experience and 21 years of teaching experience, plus a bachelor's and master's degree in music. I have more education and experience playing and teaching than anyone in the area. Simply put I understand the subject matter better and I understand teaching better than my competition. Working with young people who are excited to be playing music. I have so much fun playing music with my students. Many times it doesn't seem like a job. I love watching a player develop from a raw beginner to an experienced student. I love watching my students become good and kind and skilled adults because of their love of music.

I took guitar lessons with Chris Mattingly from 2003-2005 and found the service to be outstanding. In 2003 I was 15 and had very little music education or experience with any instrument, but nonetheless Chris quickly set me on a course that would change my life. Chris had a clever way of making the lessons fun by quickly identifying the music I responded to and finding the right songs within that style that I could play even at a beginner level. Realizing I enjoyed blues and rock, Chris took me from Chuck Berry to Hendrix and Clapton within a few lessons. I remember being impressed at how he could put a CD of Hendrix or Clapton on, and transcribe it in real time. But the service didn't stop there, teaching rock and blues was only scratching the surface of what Chris had to offer. In under a year Chris had taught me to improvise my own melodies, learn advanced musical theory, read music, and begin playing jazz standards. I also want to mention that as a great teacher, Chris was also very personable, and had a great way of encouraging the students (I also took a group jazz class under his instruction). Chris was highly qualified, having both a bachelors and a masters in music, and as such, he was more than able to garner even my obsessive interest with the instrument. By the time I ended my time studying with Chris, he had helped prepare me for college auditions in classical guitar performance. I can only presume that Chris has continued to hone his excellence as an educator and player in the decade since I studied under him.

I've worked with Chris for a couple years, and I wouldn't have any other person teach me to play music. His personality and sense of humor mixed with his knowledge of music makes for a great combination. I highly recommend Chris Mattingly.

My son took guitar and rock band classes with Chris for several years. He helped instill a love for music and taught him a lot about musicianship. I highly recommend Chris if you have a child interested in guitar.

Being a new adult student, Chris has been extremely patient in teaching me. He has made this an enjoyable experience for me. I hope to continue being Chris's student as long as he'll have me. Am so thankful I found Chris for my first guitar experience!

I have a little experience in guitar and in reading music, but not reading guitar music. Chris was able to gety 4-yr-old from tabs to sheet music in short order. He is patient and consistent. Flexible on makeup lessons. Highly recommended.

FAQs

  • How did you get started doing this type of work?

As a young person I was always very passionate about music. The guitar spoke to me like nothing else; such intimacy of sound, such passion goes into the playing. The guitar is a unique and captivating instrument, so versatile, personal and enthralling. I love to read, songwriting comes naturally for me, I've got great interest in literary works and spoken word as well. Singing and playing is a wonderful combination of my musical interest as well as my literary interests.

  • What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

Be patient, practice consistently, make time for your instrument. Don't be fooled by expectations of overnight success; music is hard work and the students who do the best are the ones who are persistent in working on their instrument, not the ones necessarily with the most talent. Ask questions before you hire. Parents should sit in during lessons. Observe your child as they practice. From my experience the children who have parents participating in the activity with them do the best.

  • What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

There are many hours of prep work behind every performance. When you watch a pro or student play on stage you see the end result of a lot of work. It's wonderful fun to play, it's intense and time consuming to prepare for a performance.
