Michael oversaw our exterior paint job being sure his employees were staying on schedule (taking weather into consideration). He consistently communicated with them and us. There was a serious disconnect between what we were told to convince us to hire CertaPro and what ended up actually happening. We had a very large and complicated job and interviewed several painters. We chose CertaPro because we were assured quality work in a timely manner by a large and professional crew. We were told the job would take 4 or 5 days. It took 12 days (not including days the crew did not work in the interim). We were told our job, being large, would require an 8 man crew. The crew size was inconsistent. At some times there were as few as 3, at most 6. New crewmen were brought in partway through the project and they weren’t given an accurate project description or instructions, so mistakes were made. We were told all paints would be purchased from a single store and even a single mixer. 7 days into the project, not all of the paints had even been purchased despite our paying a sizable downpayment that was also not communicated in the original estimate. We were told and saw in the estimate that all of the project would be listed out with appropriate details so nothing would be missed and everything would be clearly communicated to the crew. Many items in the estimate did not make it to the work order. Crew required daily verbal reminders of which paints to use where, of what was and was not being painted. Crew and owner were “surprised” to find out things that needed doing despite them being identified in our walk through and even included in the proposal. Crew was not properly prepared for the job before beginning. The crew also did a poor job protecting furniture, floors, and fixtures from dust and paint, and lines between trim and walls were sloppily done and not straight despite repeated requests for touch ups. The crew showed up late every day, left early several days, and did not keep a clean workspace. On the plus side, the job foreman was very polite and listened to our requests and even came back to the house to fix something we realized had been missed. But the job was overall too big for CertaPro to manage, and we were out additional monies for hotel, dog boarding, and house cleaning because of miscommunications and poor professionalism. I’ve used and rated well other painters on other projects, and we were highly disappointed by what we got from CertaPro for how much we paid above other painters’ estimates. We will be looking elsewhere for future projects. I would recommend them only for smaller projects, or perhaps for exterior work that does not require as much precision or care.

As to your first point, I think this is a case of the customer hearing what they want to hear and disregarding the rest. When we talked about how long it would take, I told you I don't know why you think it would take 4 or 5 days, rather, it is more like 7 *working* days, and the guys probably won't work on Sundays. In the end, despite difficulties, that is how long it took. I worked with you to schedule the job around dates you wanted to avoid, and we started on time. We did order most of the paint up front - I have the email to prove it. There was an issue with the store putting some of it in a corner somewhere and forgetting about it, and insisted they did not have it. It took some time for them to finally find the stuff they misplaced. We told you about this at the time and kept you up to date. You also are ignoring what we did for you. After we started the job we found a lot of the existing trim paint was not the right kind and was pulling off as we painted over top of it. We brought in grinders with HEPA filter vacuum cleaners to strip off the bad paint. This increased the time it took for us to finish the job. Did we charge you extra? No. And we restained the inside of your front door and did not charge you for that, either. We did clean up, and put up plastic sheeting to keep dust from roaming about the house. We did go through and make sure the cut lines were done properly. In the end, you got what you asked for and more. You should not judge a project on how things look while they are being done, but at the end results.

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
We do a custom quote for each job. We want to understand your vision for the project and we need to physically see the job to provide the most accurate price and gauge the scope of the work. Wall heights, surface repairs, surface textures, paint quality, etc. all play a role in the price. We always offer 5% discount to veterans, active duty military and retirees. We may occasionally offer other promotions.
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
We contact the customer after receiving their estimate request and gather some basic information over the phone, then set up a specific time for an free, onsite estimate. We listen to the customers needs and expectations for the project, then enter the project details in our computer to create the proposal for the project. We review the proposal with the customer to ensure all the details were captured, embracing questions from customer. We give you a detailed, written proposal on the spot. Our prices are based on standards CertaPro has developed over the past 27 years.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I run the business and I have an MBA. My residential salesman is a very good painter who ran a successful local home remodeling firm for several years. We both, and my production manager, have had training from CertaPro on various aspects.
