Q. Describe the most common types of jobs you do for your clients.
A. We happily take dogs out for mid-day walks Mon-Fri in the Downtown, Uptown, Garden District, Mid-City, Broadmoor, & Lakeview areas. We also make pet-sitting visits to clients' homes morning, mid-day, & evening 7 days a week for those who are out of town or need extra help with their pets. For those who want the royal treatment, we'll also cuddle up with your pet overnight. We offer a discounted rate for feline households that don't have a pet needing an outside walk. Most commonly, we handle dogs and cats, but we also have experience caring for small animals, fish, birds, reptiles, pigs, & even wild raccoons who were in the habit of getting evening meals. We love & welcome all animals, wild or tame!
Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?
A. How do you safeguard all the keys to peoples' homes? Pet au Pair prefers to use a lock box on the clients' property, whenever possible, rather than carrying keys on our person or in our cars. We can provide one for a $15 fully-refundable deposit or clients can use their own. It can be hidden or in plain view (studies have shown that it is a deterrent to criminals), and clients choose their own code & can re-set it whenever they like. For apartment-building dwellers, we happily revert to the key system. Either way, we don't have to carry dozens of keys around with us. The safety of our clients' homes is just as important to us as the well-being of their pets.
Q. Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?
A. We may not have the slickest website or the easiest name to pronounce if you're not French, but we are dedicated to providing peace of mind to each of our clients by becoming trusted members of the family...like an au pair (nanny), but for your pets. We continually network with community pet care providers, whether it's other pet sitters & dog walkers, boarding facilities, groomers, vets, or retail shops, as well as increasing our knowledge of animal behavior so that we can be a true resource. If we can't provide something you need, we'll find someone who can.
Q. What do you like most about your job?
A. We love getting to know our clients--the people & the pets--so we can anticipate needs & take care of them. We enjoy bringing gifts when the muse arises (a harness that just suited your dog perfectly, a photo card collection of your pets while you were away, a musically-scored video of your pets in action, or a dog book we knew you'd love). But that's just lagniappe; what we most enjoy is giving love, just for the fun of it, just because it feels good to love....much like a pet. (Smile)
Q. What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A. What people don't ask but secretly want to ask about pet sits is: "Will you just be coming in & taking care of the routine needs of our pets or will you be spending quality time with them while we're away?" The answer is given in our text or email updates with each visit: you'll be left with no doubt that we paid special attention to each animal & geared our time to giving each what they needed most, whether that was play, petting, outdoor stimulation, or quiet time with company.
Q. How did you decide to get in your line of work?
A. Speaking as the owner of Pet au Pair, I've always had a special affinity for animals. After years of volunteering in the heart-breaking field of animal rescue, it was refreshing to finally work with animals that already have a home. My team members have various stories & interests, but we're all united in our love & compassion for animals & what they can teach us.
Q. Do you do any sort of continuing education to stay up on the latest developments in your field?
A. We continually network with community pet care providers, whether it's other pet sitters & dog walkers, boarding facilities, groomers, vets, or retail shops, as well as increasing our knowledge of animal behavior & treatments so that we can be a true resource. If we can't provide something you need, we'll find a professional who can.
