Working with Terry made our house renovation enjoyable. My wife and I were both project managers in commercial construction and I can confidentially say Terry is one of the best contractors we've ever worked with. Terry does a wonderful job explaining his competitive pricing and makes you aware of potential issues before they arise. He started off doing shoring work and sill replacement at our house and that turned into a much larger scope of work after watching them execute. I look forward to our next project with Terry and team!

Tom was great to work with and did a fantastic job on our deck. He's to the point and doesn't cut corners. He worked us in to his busy schedule to get something done in an "urgent" time frame. Would definitely hire him again for other projects.

Double R was amazing!! Two days before our Act Of Sale the A/C drain clog causing water to run all over our floors - there was damage to 5 or 6 strips of wood. After trying Angie List and several other sites I remembered hearing Thumbtack advertised on the Radio, so I tried searching-Double R answered my request within an hour and met me at the house the next morning to look at the damages. Rodrick gave me a quote, returned back later that day and fixed the damages. You could not even tell there had been several planks removed and replaced! Rodrick was professional, experienced, understood the urgency and took action. I would recommend Double R to anyone. I will call upon him again to help with repairs in my home. These days it is hard to find find a contractor that will even show up, Double R is a rare gem! Thank you Thumbtack and a HUGE thank you to Rodrick and Double D!

Finally able to leave a review for this great company! I hired them to repair my roof. I had recently had my roof repaired, so I thought. The contractor ripped me off and left holes in my roof which I didn't find out until our last big rain when it was raining in my house! A friend of mine referred Legacy Restoration to see if they could help me. I was nervous because I had been ripped off already. I contacted Legacy, and their response time was great. They were here within 24 hours of me contacting them. Their quote was so reasonable, I was shocked. They completed the job within a weeks time. They kept me informed through the whole process keeping me at ease. There was no disruption to my household during their work. They did a fantastic job. Even the insurance company rep who came to inspect the work was very impressed with the job Legacy did. I would highly recommend them. They will also be my go to company for any future issues I may have.

Roland’s A/C & Heating did an excellent job at installing our Thermostats and upgrading the electrical boards on our HVACs. As well as high quality and speedy work on also fixing a busted pipe and hole in the ceiling that we had also previously encountered. His work is A+, very responsive to our questions and request and will definitely be contacting him again for future projects. If you’re looking for an repairmen and/or general contractor, that maintains professionalism and affordable cost, Roland’s your guy!

Working with Bill has been a pleasure. He has been quick to respond and professional. We are working to repair a water damaged home long distance and he has been extremely helpful and has gone out of his way to meet with our insurance adjuster. He also is more than knowledgeable enough to discuss the relevant issues such as acceptable levels of moisture in the home. He has made the process much less stressful than if we were handling things on our own. I am a real-estate investor and finding people who do what they say they are going to do has become increasingly difficult. I am grateful to have found this company and plan on using their services for future projects. Additionally, I would sincerely recommend them to family and friends in need of a contractor.

Stephen and Dixiana Trosclair 13964 JR Drive Walker,Louisiana 70785 I was introduced to Ed when he was with United Built Homes. My first impression of Ed was exceptional. All throughout the build of my new home Ed was in constant contact with me. Always checking on his contractors and asking if I needed anything on a daily basis. Also with Ed being a God fearing Christian, that was an absolute blessing to me and my wife. My wife and I have been in our new home for more than a year now and even though Ed no longer works for United Built Homes, He still kept in touch with us always asking about our home. When we were looking for a home to build I honestly believe God sent us to United Built because of Ed. Ed will always be in our hearts and in our prayers.

Bill was awesome from the start. We have had the experience from living in Ponchatoula from 2007 of contractors not doing what they said they would. Bill always showed up when he said he would and on time. His work is fantastic and extremely detail oriented. He did Sheetrock and painting work, installed ceramic tile in the kitchen and one bathroom, plumbing work and some custom jobs. There are several more jobs I want to line up with Bill, we just have to save up the funds to do them. Thanks Bill for all your hard work and dedication to making my home beautiful again!

Of all the times I needed contractor work done: roofing, tile work, plumbing, appliance repair, window installation, concrete, etc., Larry, by far, was the most customer service oriented I ever hired. Due to my work schedule I was not able to meet him face-to-face during the entirety of the project. I was set to meet him initially to do the estimate, but I had to leave before his arrival. While he was on his way, I let him know I left the key and to go in the back then call me up and I would let him know what needed to be done. That was all he needed. He would send me pics via smartphone text of the progress. He also called me at the end of the days he was at the house. NO OTHER CONTRACTORS DO THAT! NONE! At least none that I have hired. He would also offer to do other small projects he noticed while he was there. If I had the budget to do them, I would have had him do those too. He really seems to enjoy and take pride in the work he does. I had some moderate drywall work at a small rental property I was readying to put up for sale. Larry exceeded my expectations. Definitely recommended. Would hire again. Thanks, Larry!

I couldn't envision a better contractor. Cesar completed the total rehab of a home I purchased that was in foreclosure. The house was in terrible condition and needed to be gutted to the studs. All new utilities were installed. I've been living in the home for the past 7 months and I still struggle to find issues with the work that was completed. Cesar was able to understand my renovation budget, acknowledge my vision of the completed project, manage my expectations of what could be completed with my budget (let's be honest...we all have expensive tastes until we get to the cash register lol), and was dedicated to providing quality craftsmanship. Cesar was always accessible to reach by phone, answered any question I had, and was willing to provide insight when I was contemplating decisions that I would probably regret after the project was completed. I'd recommend Cesar to anyone I hear in need of a contractor. I've included a few before and after pics to illustrate his work.

Installation of a storm door. They came equipped and ready. Attention to detail was used from the start. They definitely didn't rush the job and took their time doing things right. Their installation actually looked better than the previous old install. Pricing on the job was the lowest I was given. I wouldn't hesitate to contact them first on any other jobs I may have. Don't look over these contractors.

I was very apprehensive about starting the 600 sq. feet concrete removal work we needed after hearing so many horror stories about contractors, but after meeting with Job, I decided to go for it. The price he charged was extremely competitive (beat our other bids by almost HALF) and he completed the job quickly. I have already recommended him to some of my neighbors who were impressed with the speed and quality of his work. If you need concrete removed, you would be foolish to hire anyone else to do you work.

My experience was exceptionally because my house is 132 years old and had its historic designation. Mr. Scott took these facts into consideration and used the appropriate replacement materials, exercised care in handling the original portions that would remain and produced the quality of work that blends seamlessly with the original. He was punctual, courteous, and professional at all times. I liked the fact that he kept the work area clean and free of debris while the work was in progress . He also handled unexpected issues professionally and quickly as if they were just part of the job. He has an unusually pleasant manner that makes you wish all workers could be this way.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

    • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
    • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
    • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
    • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
    • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.
