Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does landscaping cost?

The price of landscaping varies widely due to the range of choices that can be made, but you can expect to pay anywhere from $320 and $20,000 for your landscaping work. The national average cost for a landscaping project is $2,600.

Factors like the choice of plants, the amount and type of hardscaping, the square footage of your landscaped area, and the region you live in will have a significant effect on your landscaping cost.

Is hiring a landscaper worth it?

A landscaper is worth it if you don't want to invest a significant amount of time and effort into planting, trimming, raking, weeding and performing other operations on your garden or yard. Hiring a landscaper to perform regular maintenance in your yards and complete bigger projects is valuable if you’re looking to sell your house. A professional landscaper can make your house more appealing to potential buyers.

Some landscapers may perform maintenance duties — remove leaves, mow lawns, trim trees and shrubs, etc. —  but they can also help you bring bigger projects to life. This may include adding a misting system, an outdoor fireplace, water features, artificial turf, a patio and much more.

Start contacting landscapers near you to get free estimates and start planning your project today.

Where can you buy landscaping rocks?

You can shop for landscaping rocks from a variety of different sources. The first option is large chain retail stores specializing in home improvement and gardening. Often, landscaping rocks like slate and other slabs arrive on pallets and are sold in bulk, giving you a great deal. Your local landscaping store also carries rocks, and you may even have a stone or quarry seller nearby who can sell you the rocks you need. When in doubt, contact landscaping companies near you to see if they have rocks you can purchase.

What is landscaping?

Landscaping is the intentional placement and maintenance of living plants on an area of land or in your yard. This can include trees, lawn, flowers, bushes and other plant life and often incorporates mulch and other organic matter. The primary purpose of landscaping is to provide beauty to the house or building it surrounds.

Many landscaping companies also offer design, architecture and construction services. For example, they can help you design a yard that incorporates a patio, deck, pool, fire pit, lighting, walkways, retaining walls and more.

What is landscape design?

Landscaping design refers to the art of analyzing an existing landscape, planning how to transform it through flora and fauna design and working with a client to ensure goals are met. Landscape designers may completely transform an outdoor space or make minor modifications to enhance it. They may also call for grading and the construction of hardscaping surfaces like walkways or patios to add to the enjoyment of the space.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

Norman did a beautiful job on my lawn and landscaping. The price was very reasonable for the quality and the amount of work he did. I will definitely hire him again in the future.

Jose and his wife arrived on time and did an excellent job with the front lawn. I ask them to come weekly to keep my yard up and to help me with landscaping the backyard. They prep the trees to add rubber mulch for next week service. :-)

I hired New Orleans Lawn and Garden for some past-due maintenance, but primarily to re-landscape my front yard. He, his son, and another worker showed up when they said they would and worked well into the evening. The came back the next day with plants that they installed. They noticed that a long planter in front of my terrace was beginning to come apart, and replaced it for me, including new topsoil. I particularly liked Dennis because he listened to me, but also had lots of good suggestions when I asked for them. He and his son were both friendly, good-natured and uncomplaining. I am 100% satisfied with their work and will hire them again for landscaping and yard maintenance.

If you need general maintenance (lawn, weeding the flower beds, leaf blowing and pick-up, and clean up) this may not be the company for you. As I did not require planting at the time, and being only a small property with a small budget to do general maintenance and landscaping on an ongoing basis (not everything all at once), this company was not a fit for me.

Clayton was very responsive and took care of our “stage one” backyard cleanup quickly and for a very fair price. He’s a great guy who knows his stuff and was able to give us some great recommendations for what to do next. We’ll be coming back to him for our future landscaping projects, of which there are many!

These folks were amazing. I had some landscape work to do that I posted to Thumbtack on Thursday afternoon and they were able to complete the work first thing on Friday morning. They came with a great three man crew who went above and beyond in their works a ship and their price came in slightly under their initial estimate. I highly recommend them.

Juan and his crew were amazing and I could not be happier. I had no idea what plants I wanted to see in my garden. Juan and his team are very knowledgeable about plants, how they will grow what they will look like and the cost. When selecting plants for my yard they kept my budget in mind and searched the city for the best prices they could find. The end result is beautiful and all my neighbors have been stopping by to inquire about the landscape.

If I could give Stepping on Stones six stars, I would! Allan and Team did a phenomenal job landscaping my new house - from design and layout to suggesting a few plants that I hadn't considered (but looked fantastic and will be hardier than the ones I was considering) to installing a great irrigation system they took nothing and turned it into something that exceeded my expectations and will practically maintain itself. Not only would I completely endorse Allan and his company, but I'm already using him again on another project!

Green Green Grass really took care of our property! Michael-Patrick was a phenomenal representative. He came by and gave us a free estimate, was upfront about even that needed to be done, gave us an extremely reasonable price and even went above and beyond to help us take care of future overgrowth of our landscape. Thank you Green Green Grass. We will definitely call you again and refer you to any future lawn needs. Michael-Patrick is a value asset to your company as well!! Thank you!!!

New Orleans Lawn & Garden had to do a complete overhaul of the landscaping at my rental property, which was in terrible shape. They removed existing plants, put in new soil, and were able to save a great many of the plants I already had. It was a tremendous amount of work, and the results were outstanding. And they got it done extremely quickly -- within a week. Dennis was very easy to work with. Provided a quick and accurate cost estimate and stayed within that. Answered my questions promptly. I would highly recommend Dennis to anyone who needs great and reliable work done, and will definitely use again as the need arises.

Dennis was prompt in replying to my request for a quote and in completing the job once we made the decision to move forward with his company. I'm out of town quite a bit and so the fact that he was able to go to my house without me being there to look at our yard and come up with a plan for freshening up the landscaping and general maintenance was great. I had no idea what I wanted our front yard to look like and without any suggestions from me, Dennis was able to transform it completely - I love it. Our entire interaction was efficient, professional, and timely. I highly recommend New Orleans Lawn and Garden Service.

Allan and Karen are the best! I was looking for someone to create a small patio in my backyard, and I spoke with a lot of different people from Thumbtack, and Stepping On Stones were the only ones who seemed to care about my project, sketched out ideas in the moment, and advised me on different products that would work better. They immediately followed up with a formalized quote and time frame. When I finally pulled the trigger and told them I wanted to go for it, they immediately jumped into action! Allan was here first thing in the morning as planned, and he and his team built a stunning patio in my yard that also involved some intense landscaping to remove the weed jungle that had grown and lay beautiful new sod! They finished the job quicker than expected and left my yard completely clear of any debris or work equipment. If you need quality paver/brick work done by a trustworthy team who actually listens to what you want, then Stepping On Stones is the way that you must go!!!

Andrew and his team were outstanding. I only work with businesses that support veterans and Southern City Farms does that. He came to my house, walked me through a plan, got me a quote that evening and started work the next week. First, I found his quote to be honest and fair (also best of three quotes I got). His teams came in and had sand and grass laid down in about an hour, then started moving through weeds and turning soil and planting new items. He was happy to discuss each step as it started and we both made slight changes on the fly that made the house yards really look good. I had neighbors asking for his contact info, colleagues starting to call him and most of that is due to how honest and professional he is. Admittedly he also does a darn good landscaping job. I will only use Andrew and his company in the future (he’s already working 3 quotes for me). My recently purchased house went from being viewed in a negative light to being the “yard” of the block. Pictures speak more loudly in this case so enjoy.
