Gianni Palermo and his Quality 4 Less LLC: Extremely high quality work, very fairly priced, with honesty being Gianni's greatest asset, all of which were on display in his work at my residence in July 2014 in laying concrete with a slate tile border on an inclined walkway up to my front door and on sidewalk by driveway, pressure washing outside of house, sidewalk and driveway, installing tiles in my bath/shower from shower head level extending to ceiling, and installing a new toilet seat. I will be recommending him to numerous people for remodeling projects in the residence. Therefore, 5 stars with a plus, for not only "outstanding" but also "superlative". Richard L. While coming over to repair a broken fence, conversation led to broken furniture I had in my home. Daniel offered to repair that as well since I was unable to do so. I was surprised, you would think it would be too tedious a job for a professional such as he. Just goes to show no job is to small for Renovations Your Way!! Love how they added the personal touch. I will definitely be using them again and recommending them to my friends!

My experience with Josh was perfect! He communicated with me from start to finish, which gave me a high comfort level since I live out of state. He worked on one of my investment properties, and my tenant was very pleased with the quality of his work. I could tell from the pictures of the completed work, and his explanation about what needed to be done that he has a high degree of expertise in all areas of construction and remodeling. I will definitely hire Josh's company the next time work needs to be done at my apartment building.

A few years ago, Gasper Pumila's Company preformed an extensive exterior renovation project at one of the Condominium Association Developments that we Managed (and still Manage) here in Metairie Louisiana. Like any extensive construction project, minor issues arose during the course of the 3 month long project. In my 30+ years of overseeing Construction/Renovation projects on behalf of Owners/Clients, perhaps the most important thing I have learned about dealing with Contractors is how they handle issues when they arise. In every insistence, Mr. Pumila and his sub-contractor performed flawlessly quickly taking whatever needed action was required to rectify the issue. Perhaps equally and/or more importantly, they were resolved without additional cost to my client. In the months that followed completion of that project, we did have an occasion to contact Mr. Pumila concerning an issue that surfaced. Mr. Pumila responded quickly to the call and more importantly resolved the issue quickly again at no additional cost to us. Needless to say, we would recommend his services to anyone wishing to deal with a "straight-up", honest Contractor! Thanks Gasper! Great working with this family owned company. Joe and his son did an excellent job on my carport. The quote I received was better than most others, but the real reason I went with them was that they seemed to understand what I wanted. This was not the case with some other contractors. We are very happy with our new carport and would not hesitate to use Gauci Custom Building again and would recommend to others.

Chas and his workmen did an exceptional job remodeling the bathtub area of our master bathroom. This involved demolition of the old bathtub enclosure and installing new tile, bath fixtures, lighting, and glass shower door. The final results are fantastic! Chas took a dated and somewhat non-functional bathtub area and created a modern, aesthetically beautiful shower area with an overhead rain-shower, a handheld shower wand, and a very tasteful sliding glass shower door. As part of the renovation, Chas replaced a very awkward door with a pocket-door that allows for greater movement in the shower area. All through the project, the workmen were polite, professional, and took great care to keep the area as clean as possible. When we decide to redo our other bathrooms, I will definitely call on Chas and his company again. I highly recommend Olverenterprises to everyone who desires to have bath renovations done that are professional, done to exact specifications, and completed by people who are respectful of the property in which they are working. GREAT JOB CHAS!

Of all the times I needed contractor work done: roofing, tile work, plumbing, appliance repair, window installation, concrete, etc., Larry, by far, was the most customer service oriented I ever hired. Due to my work schedule I was not able to meet him face-to-face during the entirety of the project. I was set to meet him initially to do the estimate, but I had to leave before his arrival. While he was on his way, I let him know I left the key and to go in the back then call me up and I would let him know what needed to be done. That was all he needed. He would send me pics via smartphone text of the progress. He also called me at the end of the days he was at the house. NO OTHER CONTRACTORS DO THAT! NONE! At least none that I have hired. He would also offer to do other small projects he noticed while he was there. If I had the budget to do them, I would have had him do those too. He really seems to enjoy and take pride in the work he does. I had some moderate drywall work at a small rental property I was readying to put up for sale. Larry exceeded my expectations. Definitely recommended. Would hire again. Thanks, Larry!

We hired SEC HomeRemodeling to repair and remodel our bathroom floor and shower surround. The subfloor had rotted away under our existing 50 year old tile floor in our sole bathroom. Paul and Todd fixed the structural problems under our floor (repairing/adding floor joists, installing new subfloor) and now we have a beautiful, solid porcelain tile floor. They also remodelled our tile shower surround and installed a new tub and bronze shower hardware. We love our new bathroom. You can see the handmade quality work and the attention to detail that Paul and Todd put into our project. Our remodel came in on budget and was completed a few days earlier than the estimated time. We put our trust in this company, and they respected that trust. Overall, we had a great experience with SEC Home Remodelling, and we will use them for future projects.

After a leak in my small master bathroom, I decided to expand it which would include a custom built shower, new ceramic tile, cabinets, a new countertop and expanding the room 15 feet. Robert helped me with the design and spent hours with me at the flooring store. The shower he built is incredible! I was worried about the new floor to ceiling cabinet wouldn't fit but Robert kept reassuring me it would. Amazingly he installed it without any issue. My bathroom is now twice as big as it was before and beautiful. I have used him for other renovation projects and will continue to use him. And I can't forget to mention his prices. He is worth a whole lot more than he charges. Very fair prices. My husband and I are convinced he can fix or renovate anything, and do it well.

Johanna and Julio are truly amazing. They contacted me immediately , went to the job site same day to discuss pricing and procedures. The following day, they went to the job site and completed the work in just a few hours. Johanna, kept me informed every step of the way by texting me and status photos from start to finish. After 3 months, and 3 different contractors flaking out, it is so refreshing to know that good people do actually exist. I will call on Johanna and Julio for my next project. They took the hassle and confusion completely away from me.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

      What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
