Introduction: To me, music is a platform for self expression and self exploration: a means to convey truths people can relate to. The music I enjoy listening to most, no matter the genre or style, is heartfelt and tasteful. This music aims to deliver a sincere message or emotion, rather than striving to be impressive or lucrative. I strive to make music that is deeply meaningful to me, but can also resonate powerfully with others. With my students I teach music as a language. We learn to listen and speak first, and then how to read and write. This method enables students to tap into their creativity right away, without fear of breaking any "rules" of musical grammar. It also nurtures the most essential asset for any musician: the ear. Aside from developing students' aural skills and healthy playing technique, my lessons are focused on the student's goals. These often include learning favorite tunes, improvising solos, songwriting, and preparing for performances. I remind students often that the greatest skill I can pass on to them is not how to accomplish these goals, but how to master the art of practice itself. Ultimately every musician must become their own teacher, with mentors, like myself, to provide guidance and insight along the way.

I am so happy that I hired Tristan to perform at my daughter’s graduation party. He is very talented and professional. I was able to work with him on a song list based on my music preferences. I was very impressed with the wide range of music that he can perform. I was able to choose the size of the band and the length of the performance based on my budget. Tristan provided me with plenty of sound-clips of his performances. All of my guests let me know how much they enjoyed the band. The live music made the party fun and memorable.

Details: General event / party • 26 - 50 guests • 18 - 30 years old • 31 - 50 years old • 51 or older • Band • Guitar • Vocals • No preference • Variety • Outdoors

Tristan has unending knowledge of music from his time as a performer and Berklee College of Music but his teaching style for me which characterized technique as meaningless without application worked amazingly -- every new skill was taught through actual music. I often feel like I need to know the "why" behind good music or interesting progressions, and he provided that analysis alongside the where and how musical ideas could be placed. I came in with ~5 years of self taught experience and felt like every lesson was an overwhelming amount of information. Would recommend bringing a device to record with to get full value.

Details: 18 - 25 years old • No formal training; some self-taught experience • Yes, can read guitar tabs • Electric • Jazz • What the teacher recommends • Rock • Blues • Yes, the student has an instrument • 60 minutes • My home, venue, etc. • At the pro’s location

Tristan was very flexible about scheduling the lesson and tailored the singing training to my needs. He was patient during the class and very good at explaining music concepts to a complete novice (me)!

FAQs

  • What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

I treat the first month as a trial period where students may pay as they go. Then I ask students to commit to a weekly time slot and pay by the month. I offer a 10% discount for students who pay for a season in bulk.

  • What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

I offer a complimentary phone consultation to discuss your goals and answer any questions you may have about my teaching style and getting started on the instrument. Then we can get a first lesson on the books! For gigs I require a deposit in advance to hold the performance date. This deposit is transferable to another date under certain circumstances but non-refundable.

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I recently completed my Bachelor's in Guitar Performance at Berklee College of Music, graduating Summa Cum Laude. I began studying the guitar at the age seven under the direction of my father, who graduated from Berklee College of Music. Since then I have had the honor of studying with many of the greatest guitarists in the Boston area, including Richie Hart, John Baboian, John Wilkins, Ken Taft, and Erik Ringstad.
