Valen did an awesome job! For starters, she was very friendly. She payed close attention to my features and planned the makeup application around that accordingly. My makeup came out wonderfully AND stayed on all night!

Natasha has a great personality and was very easy to work with. I have sensitive skin, so I was a bit hesitant about having a makeup artist for my wedding photos. However, I decided to hire Natasha on short notice, and had an overall positive experience. The application was easy and smooth, especially her awesome airbrushing! All night, people kept commenting on the great makeup and asking who did it for me! :-) My only critique is that some of the black eye makeup got on my lower cheek during application. I didn't notice until right before the wedding photo shoot, so I had to try and quickly dab it off without messing up the foundation, but it got all over my fingers and did not come off easily. Also, there was some slight discoloration on my forehead that showed up once we received our wedding photos from not completely blending in the concealer with the foundation. :-( In the future, there should be a more attention-to-detail check, even if pressed for time. Overall, I really liked Natasha and the makeup. The makeup was light, natural, and flattering. Also, the makeup looked great all night and I did not breakout after the wedding. I would still recommend Natasha, as I believe the critiques I mentioned could be resolved with more time and attention to detail in the future.

Jessica was very professional, arrived on time with all the goodies. She was very accommodating and most of all patient with all my wedding party. I went for a trial, and she was so sweet and listened to me. She also bought these fancy eyelashes that made me feel so pretty on my wedding day! It was an exceptionally hot humid day in Boston, and I didn't have to touch up my make up all night. Highly recommended.

I saw Sasset for a makeover; to get some updates to my look. I was amazed at her stock and variety of product lines. I have dry aging skin; and she created a look for me that fit me, no cookie cutter looks. I learned new contouring and application tips that didn't take an eternity to duplicate when I did my own make up. She really helped me with my brows. Sasset was professional; used clean techniques and told me about the products she used. I posted before and after pics on Facebook and got an overwhelming positive response! Thank you Sasset!

Khushboo was fabulous! I wanted to have my make up done for a friends wedding since it was outside and I wanted my makeup to last all night. This makeup application did not disappoint! Khushboo used airbrush, applied fake lashes and knew what colors to use on my eyes to match my dress (without even seeing the dress). I received compliments throughout the night about how "fresh" my makeup still looked. Thank you Khushboo!

She even shared some tips and tricks on application. I was stunned at how fresh and beautiful I looked, and that night people kept telling me how lovely I looked. Thank you, Regina, for making me feel like a princess, and having fun every step of the way!

Ashley was very kind , she did my makeup for a friends wedding and while I’m not accustomed to full coverage makeup I was happy to see that I looked very natural. She was very positive throughout the makeup application and emphasized that her work was just accentuating my attributions. Be prepared to feel fierce and empowered.

Coming from a girl who applies a full face of makeup on a daily basis, I thought it would be a long process finding a makeup artist that would make me happy, understand what I was looking for and also make me see someone slightly different than who I see everyday. I wanted to look like me, but also like a bride. I met Kelly at her home and was thrilled to see her dining room table covered in makeup products - truly how a dining room table should be utilized! Kelly and I spent a lot of time talking about me - my skin type, what makeup I use, what styles I like and how I wanted to look on my wedding day. She tried more than one style during our trial, letting me know what she was doing step-by-step as she went along. What I found most impressive is that she took notes once we found the style I loved. She noted exactly what she was using and where it went after every single application. Her thoroughness, honesty and overall welcoming presence made this experience fun, enjoyable and will definitely bring me back for any future glam needs!

When I started my search for a wedding make up artist, I was extremely self conscious to go to anyone because of a lifelong struggle with terrible skin. I've never wanted to have someone "see" my skin without my usual cover up routine, as I struggle with both dry and oily skin and large pores that make me feel uncomfortable to be in public naturally. But Jen changed this for me. Not only did she jump right into my rescue to set up a trial appointment just 3 months before my wedding, but she really made me feel better about my skin and even took the time to educate me about what products I should and shouldn't be using, and what style make up applications will give me the results I am looking for! After the trial, she followed up to see how I felt about it hours after the application and if it was still giving me the results I was looking for! I was blown away that after 8+ hours, my face wasn't getting "shiny" from oily skin and my eyeliner wasn't smudging all over my eye lid, like it does when I do my own make up. It was a dream come true and EXACTLY what I needed for my wedding day! We had some back and forth leading up to the wedding to make sure we were both on the same page of some of the slight changes we were going to make and she was with me every step of the way. Jen and her assistant were prompt on the wedding day and fit right in with my bridal party and family! Once again, making everyone feel comfortable and laughing with us as we got ready for the rest of the day. They were even able to accommodate last minute requests for a couple of family members that changed their mind and wanted to have their make up done (life savers!) last minute! When I walked down the aisle, I had never felt more beautiful and more confident to show off MY skin. And even better, my husband was SO happy, that even with my make up professionally done, he still saw "me" at the end of the aisle - the exact look I wanted on our wedding day :) And once again, not only did my make up last 8+ hours, it lasted twice that amount of time AND through an outdoor photoshoot in the rain at our Venue!!! Amazingggg doesn't even begin to describe the worth of having Jen as my make up artist. Her talent is incomparable and I can't wait to refer her to whomever may need the perfect wedding touch!

When I was planning my wedding back in the summer of 2011, I had a vision of how I wanted everything to look, including my makeup. Simple, light and natural. Those were the only three words I used in my trial run with Tina, and that's exactly what I got. She perfected the look, and recreated it exactly on my big day. Tina traveled to Cape Cod in the wee hours of the morning to prepare for the bridal party. Despite the initial headcount I gave her prior to that morning, two extra bridesmaids expressed last minute wishes to get their makeup done. She accommodated so well and timed all the 'maids perfectly, and left ample space in the morning for my application. I was so pleasantly surprised that my makeup lasted all day and into the reception. My own application certainly never does that! In addition to makeup, Tina provided a calm presence throughout the whole morning and quietly orchestrated the flow of events for hair, makeup, getting dressed and calming nerves. Without hesitation, I would highly recommend Tina for your next big event, be it a wedding, reunion, etc.

Kemesha is such a creative and commensurate professional! There is no one else I trust for my make-up application for any event but Kemesha. Whether or not I approach her with an exact look that I'm seeking or place complete creative control in her hands, she always makes me look like a million bucks. Kemesha was the make-up artist for my wedding in 2013 -- I trusted her with my look on a day that I knew I would have the most pictures taken ever. She applied not only my make-up for the wedding (and my rehearsal dinner) but worked with seven members of my bridal party and my grandmother. To this day, everyone still raves about how beautiful my bridal party looked. Whether you're seeking make-up application, eyebrow extensions or waxing services, Kemesha is a guaranteed bet! You'll leave her looking 10x better than you arrived.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much do wedding makeup artists cost?

A wedding means love, celebration and tons of wedding photos. Professional wedding makeup artists have you looking your best on your big day and forever after in your wedding photos. The national average cost for a wedding makeup artist is $70-$100, although this price can increase based on your location, the extent of the makeup services and the reputation of the makeup artist. Most wedding makeup artists offer discounts to brides who book group services for their maids, mothers and flower girls at the same time. Wedding makeup artists who also do wedding hair usually offer package rates for hair and makeup combos. Here are some examples of average wedding makeup pricing:

      • Bridal makeup: $85-$125. Pricing often includes full face, eyes, lips, brows and false eyelashes. Airbrush makeup may be an additional $20 or more.
      • Bridal hair and makeup: $150-$200.
      • Bridesmaid and bridal party makeup: $50-$100 per person.
      • Bridesmaid hair and makeup: $100-$150.
      • Flower girl makeup: $25-$35.
      • Trial sessions: $60-$120, depending on the makeup artist. Some charge their full rate and others charge a partial rate for trial makeup services.
      • Hourly rates to stay on and keep makeup touched up throughout reception: $35-$75 per hour.
      • Travel fees: 50 cents to $1 per additional mile beyond a set radius — such as 50 miles.

Do I need a makeup artist for my wedding?

There are no rules around your wedding day, and that means it’s your choice whether to have a wedding makeup artist. If you’re on the fence about hiring a wedding makeup artist, consider the pros and cons. Some women decide against a wedding makeup artist to save money. The national average cost for a wedding makeup artist is $70-$100, which is an expense some women prefer to do without. Other women just don’t love wearing makeup. Some brides have friends or family members who are talented makeup artists willing to provide their services. If you choose not to have a wedding makeup artist, be sure to do at least two trial runs of your makeup look well before the wedding day to avoid any morning-of panic.

On the other hand, a wedding makeup artist can make the bride feel pampered and confident, giving her a flawless, fabulous look for the ceremony and reception and in wedding photos. For brides who are uncomfortable with heavy makeup, many wedding makeup artists usually excel at the natural look. Many brides consider wedding makeup part of the ritual and tradition of the ceremony, a shared experience with the entire bridal party. Ultimately your choice of whether to hire a wedding makeup artist should be based on what will make you feel most confident and happy.

How do you choose the right makeup artist for your wedding?

A wedding makeup artist can ensure a flawless look on your big day. Finding the perfect person isn’t all about price, though. Here are tips for choosing the right makeup artist for your wedding:

      • Research before reaching out. Wedding makeup artists should have an online presence with portfolios of their work. Find someone with an aesthetic you love.
      • Read reviews. You want a wedding makeup artist who’ll be on time, do beautiful work, and add a positive vibe to your day. Pay attention if previous clients report bad experiences with a makeup artist.
      • Consider skin tones. If your bridal party has a range of skin tones, make sure your wedding makeup artist and assistants are experienced and talented working with everyone.
      • Is your top pick available on your date? If so, put down a deposit to secure their services.
      • Confirm rates and payment. Clearly discuss prices and payment plans, and sign a detailed contract so there are no surprises on your wedding day.

How much should you tip a wedding makeup artist?

Wedding makeup artists ensure you and your bridal party are looking your best bright and early on your wedding day. Tipping a wedding makeup artist for their hard work is standard practice, and is also greatly appreciated. A tip of 15 percent to 20 percent of the total bill is appropriate. You may consider tipping extra if the makeup artist or someone on their team went above and beyond — for example, squeezing in Aunt Martha at the last second or redoing a flower girl’s hair free of charge after she dunked it in the fountain.

A gratuity is a reflection of a job well done, so if the wedding makeup artist was late, did a shoddy job or didn’t provide all the services you negotiated, you are not required to tip. Talk with your wedding makeup artist prior to the event to ask how they prefer payment and gratuity to be handled. Can you pay by credit card the day of the event and include a tip then? Do you need to pay in cash the day of the event? Find out ahead of time how to manage payment for services so you can be prepared with cash or credit cards as needed. Even better, delegate the task of payment to someone in your bridal party so you can just enjoy your day.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
