We were very happy with David and his work! We had a kitchen renovation project and plumbing repair that he helped us with, and everything turned out perfectly. The project had a few complications because of our old home and older plumbing, but David worked late into the evening until the job was done. He stayed within his quoted budget and even did an extra little project that needed to be fixed without going over the budget. He's a hard worker and wants to make sure the homeowner is satisfied. We will be calling him again for future projects!

We had Jaragua repoint and repair a field stone retaining wall and the final result was excellent. Adelson was very quick to respond and very professional. His pricing was extremely competitive and the final result of the job was exactly as quoted. Even working around several rain storms he was able to complete the job on time. I would definitely use Jaragua Home Improvement again.

Joe did a great job of replacing my very old shower set with a new one. Both the old and new shower valves were exposed outside the wall, but they were from different manufacturers with slightly different dimensions (old: Harrington, new: Hansgrohe). One of the old pipes behind the tiles had rusted too much and broke while removing the old valve, which made a project a lot harder than we had originally imagined. Luckily Joe was able to remove a tile to install a new pipe and the new shower set. I was very happy to see him work through the problems patiently. He kept me informed while making sure that the bathroom looked good as ever. He was prompt, courteous, reasonably priced and always willing to go the extra mile to make sure that the job was done correctly. I am very happy with the results and would recommend him highly!

Needed a drywall replaced due to water damage. Reubert walked me through the work and gave me a very fair estimate for the work which was completed 2 days later. I have no problem recommending Reubert for drywall installation or repair.

We could not have had a better experience with Marino Carpentry Services - from start to finish. Matt is very responsive and got back to us with a quote within a day. Throughout the process he answered our many questions and kept in contact as needed. He was fully transparent about costs and was able to save us quite a bit of money by salvaging the deck frame. Matt and his team did fantastic work, replacing an old and rotted PT deck with composite. The workmanship is beautiful. They even helped me when me when had a non-related home repair issue. Although he and his team are very precise and detail oriented, they also work quickly and efficiently. We would recommend his services without hesitation.

I hired Joseph Speranza for both interior and exterior work. To replace gutter and siding, repair entry door canopy that had fallen off due to the bad wnter. To replace entry and storm door and fix wall all damaged due to the winter, as well are replace outer window sill. They did a great job. It all came out very nice and I couldn't be more pleased. There did all the repairs within the time framed they had promised and cleaned up nicely when they were done. I would definitely hire them again!!

5+ Stars! Corey was as responsive, punctual, diligent and reliable as one could expect. Respected the estimate to the dot, arrived right at the agreed time, and took care of the repairs (storm door removal and installation of a new one) within the time frame he estimated. His friendly and positive attitude was an icing on the cake! Will be sure to engage him for future projects, no questions about it!

I found this company by chance on the net. It was necessary to do repairs in the new apartment, but to do it yourself - it's a thankless job I'll say. On the site I liked the function of calculating the cost of repairs, just choose the services you need and that's it. Of course, this price is not final, but you can calculate the approximate cost. We did some cosmetic repairs in about a month, the price is normal. The guarantee was given without fail. Masters are great fellows, they did everything for 5+. Many thanks to Andrey

Gary and his team at Symphony Home Improvements were absolutely awesome! I was a little nervous to have such a big (for me) project done, but they were able to answer all my questions, and really put my nerves at ease. All our questions were answered right away, Gary was there to answer all our calls and we were never left wondering what or when anything was happening. Timing was great, earlier than I had expected! Window install and removal of old ones was super fast and thy cleaned up great! I would not hesitate to use Symphony again when we need to replace more windows!

Have done a few projects with Crane recently working with Wander. The most recent was a small bathroom installation which was done on time, on budget, with good communication (including smartphone pics to confirm the fixtures and then again of the install once done). Wander also helped show us a better product to install than we had chosen ourselves - I am glad he did since it looks so much better and the quality is much better than what we could find ourselves. Will use them again for sure.

I live on the first floor. I needed to open a new door from my living room to my front porch. The project requires pulling permit from the town, purchasing a door, creating the entrance on the wall, and installation of the new door. Gerry is very responsive during our communication via phones and face to face. He taught me how to apply for the permit from the town and gave me lots advice on how to do the project and pick up a right door. He created the new entrance and installed the new door I purchased from HomeDepot. He worked very hard and charged a fair price. I would definitely seek help from him in the future for handyman service.

Gary did an outstanding job at a very reasonable cost on two projects: repair of radon mitigation pipe, and replacement of a bathroom faucet. He was punctual, efficient, and a good conversationalist. He is on my speed dial for other anticipated projects.

This father-son time, Byron and his son Eric, helped me out in a time-crunch jam. They responded to my Thumbtack RFP within an hour of my posting it. They met with me at my home the very next day to go over the job in detail. They emailed me a bid promptly and stayed in communication with me about the job as it progressed. They did BEAUTIFUL work, both on detailed repair carpentry in several places on my home's exterior and completed the exterior paint job.

If I could give bonus stars I would. J was an absolute pleasure to work with and went above and beyond my expectations for my window replacement project. His attention to detail, workmanship, and knowledge is unmatched. Working with J was a pleasant relief after dealing with some of the other contractors around. I would hire J again for any project.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.
