alex carlson says, "Over this past winter and spring, Justin and his crew built out the entire second floor of our house. What was essentially an unfinished attic with some plumbing and electrical run up to it was turned into 2 bedrooms, a bonus room, and the most amazing bathroom.Justin was recommended to me by a friend and after speaking with a few other contractors, I hired Justin as I felt he presented a fair price, was transparent about where things could be more or less expensive, and he wasn't asking to have everything figured out on day one. Prior to the actual work starting, he was a bit hard to get ahold of, but once the job was underway, he and his crew were mostly consistent. The full job took roughly 6 months (minus going through the holidays) which is right about what I expected. I really commend Justin and his crew for being as non-disruptive to our home and lives as was possible. I feel like whenever possible they minimized leaving doors open, kept things outside the construction area very clean and tidy, were pretty quite outside of power tools, and usually wrapped up before 5.Something I really enjoyed was Justin's willingness to work with me and see my vision for the space. We have a beautiful 1950's home with all original cherry trim and oak floors and I really emphasized that I wanted the upstairs to look like the rest of the house. Justin really crushed it when picking out wood, trim, and suggesting how best to frame rooms. I can't think of a single time Justin made a suggestion that we didn't go with.Equally, Justin did not shy away from me coming to him throughout the reno with ideas or materials that were outside the scope of the original work and sometimes a little crazy (sorry about the 100lb bathroom tiles, but they look great!) Justin accommodated my requests for a custom floor in one room, some unconventional tile in the bathroom, and custom-fitting some antique doors for two of the rooms. Not only that, but I felt like Justin was excited about the projects and I was so thankful that I could go to him with drawings or ideas and he was always excited to tackle it.Throughout the process Justin was very transparent with me when there were choices to save money or time. When the decision came for what kind of flooring, trim, and finishes to put in, Justin gave me "good/ better/ best" options for almost everything and explained the expectations for each. The folks he hired to come in and do things like insulation, floor finishing, and electrical were all professional and did great work as well. Shout-out to Santana Electric who I have hired multiple times for other electrical improvements since the renovation!Any complaints I have about the job, I've already spoken to Justin about and know he is aware of and working to improve. I think this renovation was his biggest job to date and the initial price quote was too low for the scope of work, but I wasn't super surprised by it and the whole project still came in at a totally reasonable cost. Communication before and during the renovation could use some work.My last comment is about working style. One of the reasons I liked Justin was that he didn't have a completely solid plan on day one. Things changed a lot day-to-day and I was answering questions and working with the guys almost everyday. I manage almost all of the ordering of tiles, vanity, lights, etc. I liked this aspect of the work, but if you are looking for a contractor who has everything sorted and you don't want to be involved with the work, Justin may not be for you.I am absolutely happy with the work Justin and crew did and would happily recommend him to anyone I know looking for construction and renovation. In addition to his fantastic work, Justin and his crew are great guys and were a delight to work with. Thank you so much for all your hard work!"See more

FAQs

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Is it worth it to remodel a kitchen?

Remodeling or renovating your kitchen can be worth the time, effort and money  — especially if you plan to sell your home. A kitchen remodel is among the most appealing types of remodeling projects for potential buyers, according to the National Association of Realtors. In fact, some realtors report that a kitchen remodel has helped close a sale. This type of remodeling is also valuable because it can build a stronger desire to be in your home.

How do I hire a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

The secret to hiring the best contractor(s) for your kitchen remodel is to compare several professionals’ customer reviews, ratings, specialities, services and prices. You can do this by searching online for the best kitchen remodelers near you

When you search online, you can quickly view important information about the contractors on their profiles. Read through the customer reviews, and look for profiles that feature before-and-after photos from the contractor, as well as their past clients. Inspect those photos closely to gauge the contractors’ craftsmanship.

You should also make sure the contractor is properly licensed and insured in your area. Some state governments regulate licensure for contractors, while some don’t. Check licensing requirements in your state.

Before you hire anyone, contact at least contractors to discuss the scope of your kitchen remodel. And request written estimates from each contractor.

What is the average cost of a kitchen remodel?

The average cost of a kitchen remodel is $12,961. However, you should always get a cost estimate from a general contractor or kitchen remodeler near you when planning your renovations.

The cost of upgrading your kitchen depends on a variety of factors. The first is whether you’re doing a small, medium or large remodel. Where you live also matters, with expensive cities correlating with more expensive kitchen renovation costs. The cost will also increase if you’re altering the footprint of your kitchen, changing the location of plumbing and fixtures and/or installing expensive materials like granite countertops.

How can I save money on my kitchen remodel?

To keep your kitchen remodel costs as low as possible, avoid making changes after construction has begun. This will reduce the amount of wasted time and material on the part of the contractor and help you avoid extra charges.

Double-check all measurements to make sure you order the right size appliances, cabinets and materials. Also, try to work within your existing kitchen’s footprint to avoid having to pay a plumber or electrician to completely redo your layout.

Research all of your options for flooring, tiles, countertops and appliances. Try to get an expert’s opinion before purchasing any material if you’re unsure about the quality.

Finally, get a few cost estimates from at least three contractors near you before you hire anyone to take on your project.

What should you not do in a kitchen remodel?

Common mistakes in kitchen remodeling include choosing fragile or low-quality materials and appliances. Attempting to DIY the entire renovation is another mistake, especially if you lack the expertise and training to do so.

A few other mistakes include:

  • Not setting a budget
  • Not thoroughly researching your options for materials, kitchen appliances, etc.
  • Not comparing cost estimates from multiple contractors, electricians, plumbers, etc.
  • Not measuring the areas in your kitchen, as well as the desired appliances

If you’re not sure where to start, contact a top-rated kitchen remodeler who can help you plan your kitchen remodel.

Where do I start when remodeling a kitchen?

When preparing to remodel a kitchen, start your planning process with the space planning phase. Before worrying about what the kitchen will look like, focus on where things will be located for workflow and function. In what order will your sink, stovetop and countertop go? Where will the refrigerator be? Then, you can start thinking about the materials, appliances and overall design for your kitchen.

If you have a solid idea of the design you want, contact multiple kitchen remodeling contractors and services to find out how much your project will likely cost and which professional is best-suited for the project.
