This company was great from my first message to them to the moment the last piece of furniture was put in place this p.m. They were timely and accurately responsive to my messages and phone call, always did what they said they were going to do (in terms of when they were going to show up, when they would call) and their workers were efficient, uncomplaining and way more communicative and friendly than any short-distance movers I've ever worked with. Highly and enthusiastically recommended!

Tom was incredibly professional through the entire process of our move. He checked in a week before and also a day before to go over the details and answer any questions I had. His team was impressively fast and had our one bedroom apartment packed and loaded into the truck within 2 hours. We would definitely recommend them to any of our friends, especially those making a long distance move (we moved from Boston to DC).

Alex and one of his men helped us move a (very heavy) treadmill. They arrived 15 minutes early, worked efficiently, and even helped to reassemble the treadmill (without us asking). They were professional and friendly and seemed to take pride in their work and relationship with the customer. Their price was the most competitive of the bids received. In fact, when I spoke to Alex on the phone, he lowered the price due to the short distance of the move. I would definitely use their services again and would recommend them to friends.

My girlfriend recently sold her house in Boston and moved to Cali. I was the one who handled this long distance move. The cheapest way was to hire POD to do this and we hired Born to Move Movers to pack and load the POD. Movers were friendly , they worked hard and they secured all our stuff in the POD so everything arrived safe. Great Job!

Geoff returned my email within 24 hours. He arrived on time and he and his partner Louis worked nonstop until they were done. They were professional, super friendly, and honest. Louis found my son's birthday money under his Xbox and gave it to me straight away. These guys are experienced, local movers who work very well together and made a stressful day fun and enjoyable! Highly recommend Son Light Movers! Love to support local Worcester peeps!

We were happy with Step by Step for our long distance move. They responded quickly to all of our emails. Their price was on par with other quotes. They were polite, punctual in both pick-up and delivery and careful with our furniture. We would definitely recommend them.

Lexel Moving and Storage did an EXCELLENT job moving our things from Massachusetts to Delaware! The entire experience was seamless. Communications were great - I never wondered what was going on next. Packing and delivery dates/times were met with no surprises. The staff on both ends of the move were professional, efficient and friendly. I would definitely use Lexel again and highly recommend their service to anyone considering a local or long-distance move. Thanks!

Mackeile is an exception, you don't get to work with someone so professional in his field very often, he is really Super Mover !!!! Thank you Mackeile for a great moving experience, you and your time really impressed us !!!!

Last Minute Movers received a desperate email from me at 7 PM Saturday on Fourth of July weekend. When my first moving company never showed up that morning I found a second, who also never showed up. It was the hottest day of the year and I was desperate. I sent a thumbtack to Last Minute Movers and within 5 minutes heard from Michael Lynch, who gave me a fair quote. He assured me my movers would show up the next morning (Sunday) at 8 AM and they were at my apartment at 8 on the dot! They were polite and pleasant (they even brought their own cold drinks), were crafty about moving furniture in the small spaces a Boston apartment allows, and finished 1/2 hour the time they thought it would take. I've already recommended them to a friend who has a move coming up later this year and will recommend them to anyone else I know who is moving. I genuinely have nothing negative and everything positive to say about my experience in using them.

I recently moved from Boston, MA to southern Maine. Smart Penny sent me a truck and two guys to move everything out of my 2 bedroom second-floor apartment to my new 3 bedroom first-floor apartment. It took three hours to get everything out (they wrapped all my furniture for me) and one to get everything back in. They even helped move some of the crap furniture left behind by the previous tenant. The movers worked so efficiently it actually ended up taking longer to drive up than it did doing the actual labor. Fortunately, Smart Penny gave me an excellent deal. Even though Maine and Massachusetts could be considered a "long distance move", they considered it a local move and charged me a flat rate for travel time, which saved me well over $200 thanks to all that traffic. I would definitely highly recommend them!

John Roberts and AA Able Moving and Storage did a great job for me. I needed just a sleeper sofa, (queen size), moved quite a distance. There was no way I could do it or even friends and I. It was too big and heavy, and it was coming from a second floor. Furthermore, my own sleeper sofa had to be removed from my house! John and one other man did the job and did it well. Not a scratch, rip or other damage done to my beautiful new sofa! And they took out my old one without extra charge, to boot! John was available each time I had to call, to set up dates and times, in order to coordinate the move with the other people. He was friendly and flexible. I would recommend John Roberts and AA Able Moving and Storage without hesitation! And, as I told him, I will be moving shortly after living in my home for 32 years. I will be calling John for help during this move!

Due to unforeseen circumstances and ones that were clearly out of the movers realm of rectifying: the move was delayed by several hours. However when they arrived the move went very fast and Alex was very professional and extremely apologetic for the delay. I was also compensated for this said issue. There were three people in total and they worked fast and furious and extremely efficiently. I am extremely satisfied and these movers are highly recommended!

Hello All! Until now, I'd never used Thumbtack or Murray's. I now share I'm truly impressed with both! What impressed me most, was Murray's grace. They recognized my long-distance move was both exhaustive and at times overwhelming, and always exuded grace. Thanks to all!!

I hired the movers to move a large & heavy piece of furniture, that I had picked up at a sale, from my car into my apartment. They were very accommodating to my schedule, and they were swift and handled the job with care.

AmerApex helped us move from our high-rise condo in Chicago to a 3-floor townhome in the Bay Area. They helped us pack up most of our things (and the car) and load it into the truck, and it only took 3 days to arrive! Alex and his team are responsive, highly professional, neat, and respectful. I would highly recommend them to anyone doing a long distance move!

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much does it cost to move across the country?

The national average cost for hiring cross-country movers is $1,490-$2,220. A number of factors can affect the cost. One factor is the distance you want to move. For example, an East Coast-based moving company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. Another factor is how many belongings you have. Most cross-country movers charge by the cubic foot.

The type of move you want is another consideration in cost. You can have your belongings moved exclusively and delivered on a set day, or you can opt for a consolidated move, which is less expensive. In a consolidated move your belongings are stored and transported with the goods of other customers who are moving to your general vicinity during the same general time frame as you. Your belongings should arrive within a one- to two-week window, rather than on a set day. If you want the cross-country movers to pack your belongings for you, the cost will also increase.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
