We have been putting off having our gutters cleaned for years. Not only that but we didn't know a reputable contractor to perform that service. I found Thumbtack, and received 5 quotes with reviews. Stephen McKenna replied within hours with a reasonable quote and assured me that he would be able to do the job by the end of the week. I was delighted, especially because it is December and I thought it was too late. I gave him the chance to change his quote because our house is big, but he did not. He came when he said, cleaned up the area to perfection, and even emailed me before and after pictures of my gutters. Stephen McKenna does all types of home improvement work; I would hire him again and recommend him without hesitation. GS-Seekonk

Fall River, MA 02720 - I put a request for construction debris removal on Thumbtack and Todd was the first to reply and his reply was followed immediately by another message letting me know he could come by in person to see what I was looking to have removed. Being a Thumbtack user myself for work, I was more than willing and ready to have Todd come by with his team along with his own roll off dumpster setup. Seeing his price was more than fair, I hired them on the spot to take care of the work, which they did in short order and left the area extremely clean! I would definitely use Todd again and will do so for business in addition for personal needs. Being in the Disaster Restoration Business, I have spoken to and had various quotes for all sizes of jobs, which included demolition work, and I am truly happy that I was able to meet Todd through my own project and now I have a great person and team to access when we need help at work too. Thank You to Todd and his Team for their Excellent Work and I look forward to working with you all very soon! Steven V. Darcio was incredibly easy to work with, very prompt in his follow through on the estimate and all contact/scheduling thereafter. I'm very pleased with his work and happy to know that we paid someone directly to do the work, not just a contractor. He worked quickly & efficiently & well within our timeframe and budget. We look forward to having him back again for another project soon!

I found Enrique last second to do a significant amount of work to repaint and fix up my condo that I rent out. The place hadn't received any TLC for 10 years and was in pretty rough shape. I was working on a tight timeline and budget and Enrique and his team were able to finish the entire project in just over a week. They did a great job and went above and beyond the call of duty, even suggesting to me extra areas that needed work and ultimately did not add to the overall cost of the project. Enrique even called in his cleaning crew when my cleaners fell through last second the day before I was planning to show the unit. On top of all that both Enrique and his workers were courteous, friendly, and professional in every way. They will be on the top of my list for future jobs and projects and I would recommend them to anybody looking for a contractor for jobs both big and small. As you can tell I am very happy with the service and the work that was completed. Thank you Enrique for stepping up and completing the job on a tight timeline and for a reasonable price.

The Ortega brothers did an amazing job. Daniel was very easy to deal with and gave us great advice. They renovated our kitchen including demolition, a new floor, appliances, counter and cabinets. They also redid three ceilings and completely painted the apartment. WE did this all in two weeks between a changeover in tenants! I say we because my wife and I worked extremely hard to manage the project and keep things moving. The Ortega brothers stayed focused and managed the electrician and plumber and got the project completed by the hard deadline. Naturally, such a compressed time frame was stressful, but Daniel kept his cool! Overall we are very happy with the project.

We had a small demolition job with a hard deadline and difficult access in the back corner of our property and at the bottom of a slope. Junior and his crew were able to get in, get the job done and be finished and cleaned up in a day. They worked around the obstacles. I would recommend this service to people I know.

Very pleased with Bob and his crew. After two years of being jerked around by various contractors and friends who said they could "easily do this" we finally found RM Paolino Construction. Bob met with us on a Saturday and gave us a detailed estimate with some great cost-saving design changes for our kitchen and bathroom. We signed a contract that following Friday and by Monday morning our bathroom was gutted and on its way. What a relief it's been to deal with a real contractor after all time we wasted with other so called "professionals". Bob has kept us up to speed every step of the way and the bathroom looks great. Can't wait for kitchen to start. Highly recommend RM Construction to anyone looking for a professional, full service contractor who won't give you the run around!

The team that was sent to my home to finish my basement and main floor was wonderful. They were extremely polite, organized and provided quality work. The price was more than reasonable and I couldn't have asked for me out of a general contractor.

JP came to look at one project for us and ended up taking care of two! We had a few different contractors come through, but JP was the most professional and had the best vision for completing what we were trying to accomplish. Everything went perfectly according to plan and we couldn't be happier with the finished result. We discussed costs up front and everything came in on budget. Very responsive to any questions or concerns that came up and had perfect suggestions for when we didn't know which direction to go in. Very happy with everything and won't hesitate to call for any future projects!

Kevin and his two workers were outstanding in every way. My customers had left their house for a week to allow me to do what had had seemed to be a simple kitchen upgrade job. It quickly turned into a demolition nightmare though, and when I told Kevin about my situation, even though he was in the middle of another job, he was good enough to make some time available for me the very next morning in order to bail me out. He and his team arrived early, set right to work, had everything cleaned up and in the dumpster and were on their way in record time. They were professional, personable and skilled and I recommend them without reservation.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

  • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
  • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
  • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
  • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
