Jennifer was willing to meet our needs, and offered alternative options for training our dog to stay in the yard with her electric fence. It turns out we had a rechargeable collar that wasn't holding charge. We replaced the system and our dog is now staying in the yard again. I want to thank Jennifer for bearing with us through the process. Lynn

Theresa is doing great job on training my dog. She really loves dog. I can tell that she is fully engaged in training dogs. She treats dog as her little baby. I am very glad to have Theresa as my dog's trainer. She is patient and responsible. Both of I and my dog have learned a lot from her. Sprite learned to sit, down, and leave things. She becomes a polite puppy and starts to listen to my instruction. Although sometimes she is still a little bit hard to control, she had learned more that I have expected. I would like to keep touch with Theresa and let her teach Sprite more lessons. I am very appreciate for what Theresa have done.

Amanda is doing a great job helping me with my dog Darla's training. Amanda comes to my house for the sessions which I really like. I hired her for 4 sessions and have had 3 sessions so far with the 4th session scheduled in a few weeks. I adopted Darla from the SPCA and she came with a lot of baggage and fears that I keep discovering as things occur. Her biggest fears were people, noises, & other animals. Her fear was so great that she showed aggression (not towards me but towards the person, noise, or animal) which was worrisome for me because I wanted her to have a good quality of life with me. I've seen such an improvement in Darla's behavior already and we,be only had 3 sessions so far. She's learned quite a few commands, she is far less fearful of people, handles her fears of noises much better, & we're still working on her reaction to other animals but it has improved greatly. Amanda has suggested & shown me different options to try when these situations arise and they're working do well. All in all I'm very pleased with Amanda & the training sessions. I love the post session training notes because they help me to remember everything we covered during the session. I would highly recommend Amanda at Good Dogs to anyone who is having issues with their furry family members. Amanda is very knowledgeable, approaches everything with a positive attitude, uses positive reinforcement, and is so good & kind to my dog. I couldn't have asked for a more positive experience.

Kristen is an amazing trainer! She really connects with your dog and get what works for them. Easy step by step instructions and commands so you can always keep up with the training on your own. She even takes time out of her own day to help via Facebook, text, or even in person if needed. I can't recommend her enough!

We had a great experience with our Trainer Renee. We recently adopted a Dachshund mix, Callie and the training has helped so much. We worked on Crate Training, Jumping and the biggest thing was pulling on the leash. Callie now happily goes to her crate, is so much better about not jumping and no longer choking herself pulling on the leash!

Excellent is an understatement. This is more than just obedience training. It is insight to the dog/human relationship, from the dogs point of view. I didn't think I could change the behavior of my 4 1/2 year old dog, but I was mistaken. I just needed to stop doing all the wrong things. Don't go elsewhere just to realize you should have made Progressive Canine Dog Training and Behavioral Services your first stop!

Noelle was great! We came to her for aggression and destructive behavior, and she surpassed everything we expected. We got Riley back a whole new dog!! She came to our house during training and coached us through her training process. We could not be happier with her and the care and training of our dog. I'd give her 6 stars if I could!

Not only has Jocelyn helped with training my new puppy Zac (which she is amazing at), she also came to my home two to three times a day while my family and I were away on February vacation. It was such an amazing relief to know my puppy was well taken care of, had consistent and amazing companionship throughout the day, and was taken on walks and provided meals. Jocelyn provided me with the much-needed sense of peace while I was away, she sent me pictures and videos during each visit, and was available to add drop-ins even at last minute notice. I would highly recommend all of her services to anyone who has a four-legged family member!!!!!

Fantastic! Jake helped me correct some behavioral issues I had with my newly adopted border collie. It was a joy working with him and my dog and I are better for it! I learned so much as he was a wealth of knowledge when it comes to dog training. He puts the clients needs first and was very committed to the job. Every minute of our session was devoted to training, so you'll definitely get your moneys worth.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

    • What type of training methods do you use?
    • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
    • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
