I am very happy with the service I received, the guys were very professional, on time and they were within my budget. My playset is huge and required many hours of labor. They took the time and care to build the playset. They took care of everything so I did not have to miss work, they kept me updated with pictures. They have great references. Would highly recommend!!!

Simply put, Wayne is amazing. We had significant water damage to our roof which rotted the rafters and destroyed our soffits. Wayne came to our property, evaluated the work and gave us an estimate to the cost and labor involved in the project. Wayne worked tirelessly for several days until he had repaired and replaced everything. And through it all, he never went over his estimate. We are so grateful to Wayne that we have hired him for more projects. You can't go wrong with Wayne. Thank you Wayne.

John laid wood floors for us, did demo and install of our new tile in our kitchen and bath, replaced our vanity and toilet and put up our new breezeway door. John was always prompt and friendly. He is a great guy and worker. He was willing to help my husband move furniture. His installation cost was much lower than Home Depot's install estimate and he was our best or matched estimate here. We are grateful for John's work. We occasionally had a difference of opinion on style or color, and John's work days vary in length. Sometimes we felt like we wished he had stayed longer to get more accomplished, but the work he was doing was hard labor so we understand the physical aspect of this job for one man. He did leave us with a few loose ends, that we will finish ourselves. Overall good experience and we are glad that we hired John.

My wife and I hired John to remodel our bathroom and put hardwood flooring in our sun room. We have been absolutely thrilled with John's work. John's positive qualities include: 1. Meticulousness: We are particular people and can be hard to please, but we found that John holds his work to a standard that would never leave us anything but totally satisfied. If something wasn't right, he wouldn't just move on. He would make sure to correct any problems even if it meant more work on his end. Furthermore, with our wood floors, John's woodwork went above and beyond what we could have imagined. He hand scribed all of the pieces of woodwork around our fireplace and non-removable trim perfectly. Also, the tile work in our bathroom came out immaculate. 2. Excellent problem solving skills: I wanted to do the demo work myself, and of course I did some things wrong, which John had to fix. Also, because our house was old, there were unexpected issues that came up during the re-modelling process. John did not let any of these issues be a show stopper. Furthermore, he was very fair with the additional costs associated with the extra labor which was not in the estimate. 3. Honesty: We were totally comfortable leaving John alone with our house and belongings. Also, as I said before, John gave us a very fair price on anything extra that came up. Furthermore, he would always present options which could save us money. 4.Eye for aesthetics: Although we tried to work out all of the details on how the bathroom would look, there were still a lot of outstanding decisions that needed to be made during the remodeling process. John was very willing to give us his experienced opinion. For instance, John suggested doing a double band of mosaic around our bathroom, which we are really thrilled with. I know that I am not covering everything good to say about John's work, but hopefully you can get the idea. Lastly, not that it matters to everyone, but John is a very nice and respectful person. I will definitely be using John in the future and will recommend him to anyone I know looking for a contractor.

RJ Development delivered impeccable service. I admit I was hesitant based on a negative review previously written, however the way Rich followed up with me, and answered all my questions really put me at ease. He took the time to come to our home to clarify what was needed. He kept to the pricing. This is a very nice contractor and very personable. I would recommend him without hesitation!

Thu 8:49 AM Jeff was the first to respond to my request on Thumbtack for a carpenter in the Rockport MA area. He was easy to communicate with and was prompt in any meeting time or email communications we needed. The estimate was clear and we felt reasonable. The work, wood rot replacement, & patio paver repair looks great. I will hire him again to work at my house.

Alex, the owner, is EXTREMELY good, professional. His response time was 30 minutes on an estimate and started and completed a project 24 hours later. I was immensely happy and he went out of his way to even do some additional spot work at no cost. His labor costs where fair and he also picked up the materials. I would recommend him for any job large, medium, or small. He IS the best painter I've ever worked with (and I used to be a painter back in college myself.)

Scott and Kevin did a great job and really minimized the cost without cutting any corners in getting the rot repair on our house siding. Scott was the first to respond when I put out the bid/request on Thumbtack; came out to visit the house and put together a thorough estimate that broke out the materials and labor; and supervised the work with final walk through to make sure we were satisfied. I would bring K&S Remodeling team back for more work and happily recommend them to our friends and neighbors.

When I hired Star Roofing I was not aware of Preserved Svcs. I read Star's rating which swayed my decision. They did a few things I did not care for. They worked hard but some of the work was done by workers that were not roofers . I had to repair some shingles (Wood) because they did not see and use the flashing that was there because it was tarred down (pry it up and use it). They did a good job other than ME having to repair something that was there . Fortunately I can do this work or I would have had added expense.

Admir was a gentlemen, resourceful and clean . He responded quickly and got the job done the very next day - changing out a light fixture. He did have to alter the mounting bracket to make it work, and was quick to come up with a solution. His cost of labor was very reasonable as well. I would definitely hire him again and highly recommend him to anyone else needing a handyman.

Kevin is an experienced craftsmen and has a lot of charm in his way. His work was done on time and efficiently and I really enjoyed how he always had a smile on his face and was up front in all communication regarding the work. He addressed problems on the fly and had a great knowledgebase of the carpentry/labor as well as paint and other projects we wanted done that complimented the work. He was a real joy to work with. I would definitely recommend him, in fact, I have.

Did an amazing job bringing our old oak chest back to life. Josh took great care to go above and beyond. He didn't charge enough - about 1/2 other quotes. Definitely a labor of love.

I contacted Boston Home Repair Pros for a living room redesign and when I called I spoke to Ashley she was very welcoming and warm. I had a lot of questions about pricing and the materials they use and she was very helpful and honest. When the day came for the laborers to show up a very nice gentleman named Sean showed up. His work was efficient and very well done. I was very pleased with the end result. I have told all my friends to go with this company for further "home makeovers".

I needed to have a door replaced and windows installed in my home. The service men who completed the work were very precise, hard working and kind. I have a difficult schedule with getting service done because I work full time and I have an infant. However, they were very flexible with my availability and were able to work with my schedule and get what I needed completed in a days time. They charged a very fair price for the labor, and did an emaculate job with cleaning up after the work was finished. My home was left in good hands and the door and windows look great! I would highly recommend this service to my friends, family, and others who are looking to get some remodeling work done in their homes.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

    • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
    • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
      • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
    • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

    What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

    • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
    • Toilet replacement: $75.
    • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
    • Faucet replacement: $125.
    • Garbage disposal: $75.

    Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
