Jim repaired our fence that got crushed by a tree limb this past winter. He did it at a fair price and in a timely fashion.

Over the spring I had lost my large double gate to a wooden picket fence. I had contacted several companies for help and all came out and were beyond expensive. I found Steve through a google search/craigs list and then found his FB page. Having seen his work I felt confident in calling him. He was prompt in returning my call and came out within a few days to assess the issue. HE WAS THE ONLY PERSON to recommend repairing than replace the entire gate. He explained the history of my gate and how they dont make it anymore and how he could repair it using a system he has for situations like this. He was out in within a few days and fixed the gate plus a few other issues he noticed along my fence line. Steve is fantastic! He is honest and has great customer service skills. I highly recommend him to anyone in need of a fence or fence repairs. Mike B

Marc did a great job. He was on time, friendly, put together my bed frame thoroughly and quickly, and even helped me hang a frame on the wall. I highly recommend his services! I'm going to recommend him to all my friends who are moving in the Boston area.

I had a great experience working with Obed and his team as they installed our 6' vinyl privacy fence. Obed stopped by our house to take a look at our yard the same day we first spoke on the phone about the project. After taking a look around our property, we agreed on a price and found a date that worked for us both to install the fence. The guys who work on Obed's team at GMP were very professional and thorough while installing the fence. They made sure to clarify all details of the installation with me prior to installing the fence. I highly recommend GMP!

I can't say enough about Dan Hanna of Pro Cut & Clean Landscaping. I am so happy with the repairs that Dan's company did and now my fence looks like new. After getting two quotes for replacing my fencing, I looked into repairing it instead. Dan came by the same day that we made contact through Thumbtack, proposed what he would do to restore my fence, and estimated what it would cost. Well, they did the work yesterday in one day, and today had it power washed and now my fence looks beautiful, really like new at one-seventh the cost of a new fence. My thanks to Dan and his very professional team. Katherine of Burlington, MA

Dave tore out an old half-wall in our entryway, and built a replacement wall in a different location that worked better for us. Dave was outstanding to work with -- very responsive, incredibly hard-working, very friendly, and with great attention to detail. And his work was beautiful. We would definitely hire him again.

I was extremely pleased with my experience. Artem came in the morning to check out the project and it was finished that day. Aside from replacing my bathroom vanity, he also patched a hole in the wall and offered to paint and hang up my bathroom mirror. I will definitely be calling him back in the future.

Amazing. Kenny does amazing work. I hired him to install both an aluminum fence and a chain-link fence at my house. He was a pleasure to work with and his workmanship was top notch. I am pretty sure he took more care with my project than he would do for his own. He even decided things weren't perfect (I couldn't even tell) and went above and beyond to improve things even more. It is also worth pointing out that he is very reliable (comes and does what and when he says he will). The real kicker is that he is extremely reasonably priced as well. You can't go wrong with Kenny G Fence and Railings.

John did several small projects for me, including fixing an old window that I couldn't open, building a shelf in a closet, and hanging a large collection of photos that I had laid out and arranged in a precise order. John is creative, resourceful and professional. He is a great, honest guy and a pleasure to work with.

V&C Painting and Construction INC helped install a costume chain linked gate for me and repair my chain linked fence. Joao came with an assistant and they were both a pleasure to work with. He was very professional, responsive, skilled, and was a pleasure to work with. He showed his knowledge of how to custom make a fence right and I appreciated his attention to detail in making sure that the fence was professionally built and also made my house looked great. They cleaned up all of their work and left my yard spotless. I will definitely hire him again for other projects around my house. Thank you!

herb came out and measured this job twice, because it is large. his son john was the foreman and did an awesome job wrestling with delayed delivery of one fence type, while plowing ahead with the rest. to put this in context, we fenced in around 1300 lineal feet, that's about 1.5 acres of land - with a mix of full round cedar rail and post at 48 inches (3 horizontals) and 4x4 pressure posts running through nearly 900 feet of trees and land. all of it was then layered with a 48 inch high black wire to contain dogs (and deter other wildlife). it looks awesome, and they took time to trim each and every one of those circa 100 4x4 posts to make them the same height even with land slopes, and then lifted and moved assorted cedar to level it at eye view - then trimmed endless wire, poured tons of cement and probably walked about 100 miles to get the whole job done ;) can't recommend these guys enough! i'll be calling them again next year when we're ready to do the small fencing around our driveway entrance.

George came one day after I hired him to remove a wooden fence and old swing set. I found him to be an exceptionally hard worker who gave a very fair price for the work. He also was a great communicator, letting me know that he hit some traffic and would be a few minutes late. When the job was done, he cleaned up beautifully. And he was a truly nice guy. I would definitely use him again.

Overall was very satisfied. The price was good value for a large replacement patio and fence. Bruno and his crew were all very friendly and responsive to trying to address my concerns. My yard presented challenges due to pitch of yard and some stump removal. They worked hard to make it work. Took longer then I expected but some delays were unavoidable due to weather and paving company not providing the right color mixture of pavers. And I was not in a hurry anyway. Bruno always got back to me on my questions and issues. Felt they were hard working and very honest.

The final job was of top quality. Compared to my back yard neighbor who had their fence recently done as well, the posts were dug in to the ground until the fence was meshed with the ground - no holes. My neighbors fence was anywhere form 6"- 12" above the ground, so that we had to put extra pieces at the bottom to cover the gaps.

These guys were a god sent. Great work at an amazing value. I needed to fence in my yard on a property with multiple tricky spots, trees, rocks, weirdly shaped boundary, and I had a very limited budget. These guys were problem solvers, getting around obstacles much better than I had expected and not even trying to charge me more for having to do all that. I learned that they also have skills and experience with other types of projects. I’m certain to call them in the future.

Goody's has done several things at my house and I've always been very happy with the results! Darren mows the lawn but also put up a 6' fence for me last year (fencing in the back yard) and built a really nice paver patio for me two years ago. He's very responsive and I can always reach him on his cell when I need something. In the winter I usually snowblow my own driveway but during very bad storms I've asked him to plow for me and he's always willing to come by and help! I'd highly recommend Darren and Goody's!

Fabio and his team did a Fantastic job, they were ver responsible, suggested savings and alternatives to things, were super flexible in scheduling and worked fast and with excellent quality. I initially contracted them for a fence but I ended up doing all of my house work with them, they did: Painting exterior and interior Floor installing and floor sanding and staining Interior painting We still have more projects ongoing with them. They are absolutely fantastic and will be my go to for all my projects from now on.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much is a redwood fence per foot?

A redwood fence is a long-lasting home investment that can add beauty and major curb appeal to your home. Redwood fence installation costs are higher than those for pressure-treated pine or cedar, due to the relative scarcity of the wood. Pricing can vary for redwood fence installation costs based on regional labor rates, current prices of redwood planks, the height and linear feet of the fence, and any custom designs or features. Redwood fences, in addition to being beautiful, are naturally more resistant against bugs and rot than less hardy or dense woods. Redwood fences also generally fare well in wet or humid climates due to their natural oils — which also make them easier to maintain. Materials costs per linear foot for redwood planks can range anywhere from $6 to $20 or more, depending on grade, quality and height.

How much does it cost to put up a chain-link fence?

Chain-link fence is one of the most affordable options for adding safety and value to your home or business. The national average chain-link fence installation cost is $2,750. Chain-link fences are relatively simple for the pros to install; a fence of less than 150 linear feet can often be put up in under one day. A good rule of thumb is to add an additional workday for each additional 100 linear feet of fence to be installed.

Chain-link fence installation costs are affected by the fluctuating cost of steel, regional labor rates, the height of fence you select, and the features you select, such as a powder-coated finish. The industry standard is galvanized steel, which is rust- and corrosion-resistant. Galvanized chain-link fence installation cost, including labor and materials, is typically $12 per linear foot. For a more contemporary and elegant option, black powder-coated galvanized chain-link fence might cost approximately $15 per linear foot on average, including materials and labor. For industrial sites or businesses, 10-foot-high galvanized chain-link fences may provide additional security, but also have an added cost. A 10-foot-high chain-link fence could cost $17-$18 per linear foot, including labor and materials.

How much does it cost to install a vinyl fence?

A new fence can mean added home value, increased curb appeal, and improved home security. The national average vinyl fence installation cost is $4,600. Vinyl fences have a number of appealing qualities such as their durability, their lasting good looks (they don’t weather like wood does), their versatility, and the fact that they require little to no maintenance such as staining. Fencing companies typically charge per linear foot for vinyl fence installation. They calculate their estimates based on materials to be used, height of fence, linear feet of the proposed fence, and the accessibility of the terrain. If the workers need to level the land before work begins, your vinyl fence installation costs will probably increase. Vinyl fences are typically more expensive than wood or chain-link. For example, one company might charge $19-$22 per linear foot for a basic 6-foot vinyl privacy fence. Another company might charge $25-$35 per linear foot for standard vinyl fencing, while decorative fencing with custom detail could increase that cost to $50 per linear foot. For a 6-foot-high white vinyl privacy fence with two walk-through gates (plus demolition and disposal of the old fence), the cost of the total project could run $8,000. A 4-foot-high, 36-linear-foot white picket vinyl fence with one gate could cost $2,600.

How much does it cost to install a wood fence?

Help define your property line, protect your home and yard, and boost your curb appeal with a new wood fence. The national average for wood fence installation cost is $3,250. Wood fence installation costs will vary based on your geographic location, the type of wood you select, the height and style of wood fence you desire, and the condition of your property. Pressure-treated pine is a common and attractive choice that is usually resilient against rot and bugs. Cedar is another budget-friendly option that, although more expensive than pressure-treated pine, can be more affordable than redwood or teak. A wood fence requires maintenance to ensure its long-term health and beauty, so keep future staining and painting costs in mind when you’re calculating fence installation costs. Here are some examples of how height and material affect the approximate cost of wood fences:

  • 6-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence: $15-$17 per linear foot.
  • 4-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence: $13-$20 per linear foot.
  • Cedar fence: $18-$25 per linear foot.
  • 6-foot-high, double-sided (meaning both sides are uniform), pressure-treated pine fence with 6x6 posts: $25 per linear foot.
  • 12-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence with custom detailing: $75 per linear foot.
  • 6-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence with a custom lattice top: $30-$50 per linear foot.

How much does it cost to install a fence gate?

Adding a gate to your fence can be a practical way to provide access to a yard, work area or outdoor living space while ensuring safety and privacy. Gate installation costs will vary based on the gate material you select, the size of your gate, whether you install a fence at the same time, and any special features you’d like to add. Standard opening size for a single-wide gate is 4 feet; a double-wide gate is 8 feet. A small gate may be for decoration; a double-wide gate can be mounted on a rolling caster system to allow access for cars or wide loads. Here are some examples of average fence gate installation costs:

  • 4-foot, single-swing chain-link gate: $100 for materials and installation costs.
  • 28-foot wheeled chain-link gate on a caster system: $800-$1,000 for materials and installation costs.
  • 4-foot, single-swing wood gate: $75.
  • 8-foot double-wide wood gate: $150.
  • 4-foot white vinyl walk-through gate: $300–$400 for materials and installation costs.
  • 8-foot, double-wide white vinyl gate: about $800 for materials and installation costs.
  • White vinyl gate fence more than 8 feet wide: $1,200-$1,500 for materials and installation.
  • Arched black powder-coated aluminum pool gates: $175-$200 per gate.
