Alfredo did an amazing job cleaning out our dryer vent, which was no easy job given that there were birds living in it. He also replaced our dryer vent cover (on the exterior of our condo) and offered to come back if we had any additional bird issues. He was friendly and efficient. We highly recommend Alfredo; we'll definitely use his services again!

I received a very reasonable quote for the installation of a garbage disposal and a new kitchen faucet. For once, I was pleasantly surprised. He arrived a few minutes early. That's a first. Although he ran into a few problems, as is expected in old houses, everything was done well and the price remained reasonable! I have a number of projects and have already asked for quotes from Big Eight Mechanical. They do everything. After searching for years for someone I can rely on to do work in my house, I found the one company that can do it all. This is a great find! I had a perfectly terrific experience today. I couldn't be more pleased!

We hired Adam to remodel our kitchen and also build a new deck, and his work quality and efficiency far surpassed our expectations. Not only did Adam complete the project on time, he also managed to stay within budget, which was a daunting task considering the extent of our projects and our tight deadline. We are both first time home buyers and have no experience with a fixer upper house, but Adam easily won my trust when he gave me a quote and provided me with his action plan to deliver within my timeline. Adam was the only contractor out of the 6 others I called to give detailed breakdown of the costs. He also listened attentively to what I wanted. He really took the time and effort to understand what we expected from him and went above and beyond to make our visions become realities. I wouldn't have my dream kitchen without Adam's help. What I had was just a picture and a vague vision in my mind, but Adam guided me through the design process and executed with perfection! I had multiple projects going on at the time and he coordinated all of them so seamlessly, I was able to move into our new house and have a functional kitchen, something I didn't even think was possible. Adam and his crew always cleaned really well after their work, even my neighbors were impressed with the kind of care Adam had given to our property and needless to say, I've given my highest recommendation to Adam and pass along his contact to all my neighbors and friends. What I appreciate the most about Adam is his honesty, a rare trait to find in contractors I've dealt with. Adam delivers what he promises and he doesn't cut corners in his work. I just hope all the raving reviews wont get him too booked up for my future projects!

I can't say enough good things about Joseph's work on this project. He came in to fix a few issues I had on cabinets that were installed by someone else. Needless to say, he made the kitchen look like it was supposed to look. He was careful, precise and patient when I didn't have everything he needed and had to run to the store. He installed the hardware on the cabinets as well and they're exactly what I pictured and completely lined up with each other. He did great work and is just an all around good guy. Will definitely be calling for future projects. Thank you again!

We asked Dan to plan and estimate a relatively small upgrade to our kitchen, one involving installation of a new appliance and significant work on the walls, ventilation, and painting. His use of a handheld to design the project in front of us, showing us on his screen the options and way the project would look was most helpful. The work was done on time, to specification, with consideration of the disruption being caused by living in a small construction project, and with a complete clean-up. I completely recommend him.

I cannot say enough about my experience with EM Remodeling. Edson gave me a very fair price on several tasks in the house. He and his crew painted a ceiling, created a new railing for our deck, and disassembled and took away a rotting shed in our back yard. He finished all of them very quickly and on time. He and his crew cleaned up to the point that we never even knew they were there! They were so fantastic that we are already lining them up to help with a kitchen remodel. I would recommend them to anyone! Thank you Edson!

Can I give them 10 stars?? We had a bathtub and tub surround removed and a walk-in tile shower built in its place. First of all, I appreciated that Jon didn't balk at a smaller job. I can't tell you how many places won't even give you an estimate unless you're gutting an entire room. Jon came by within a day of my contact call, and he had great ideas. I am not good at envisioning things so his ideas and pictures were very helpful. Scheduling was great. He even worked around an unexpected visit by relatives in my home. The work was excellent. They came and went and worked away and we hardly knew they were in the house. At the end of each day, whether they were there for an hour or 5 hours, they cleaned their way out of the house and left everything in fantastic shape. Usually that area of a house is a small disaster while work is being done and until the job is finished. Not so with Top of the Ladder. That was huge for me. The finished job was all I had hoped for and more. Jon answered every question, explained every step of the process, addressed every concern and, again, cleaned everything as they exited the job and the house, down to washing my bathroom floor and the stairs. They did the demolition, the plumbing, the wallboard, the tiling. He referred us to Action Glass for the doors and was spot on with his recommendation for a job well done. AND his price was extremely reasonable. I honestly dreaded taking on this project, unsure about my ideas, the mess, would I like it, etc. I would definitely contact Top of the Ladder and Jon Lewis for any other projects we decide to tackle in our home. They are not only Top of the Ladder, they are top of the line in quality. I think it's important to say that I found Top of the Ladder through an ad. I did not know Jon or any of his workers. He's not a relative or a friend of a friend. My recommendation for this service is based purely on the work done in my home.

Initially, I had John and his crew install vinyl siding and replace some windows and doors. I was so impressed with their craftsmanship and the fact that they kept their work site clean I had them come back to add a dining room addition and kitchen remodel. This work was also was remarkable. They came in under budget and on time. And then I had a 3 season porch and deck installed. A couple years ago I decided to add a carport to an existing garage and didn't hesitate to contact John. With his keen insight, the intial framing was done so that if at a later time I wanted to integrate the carport into a garage stall it would only take a limited amount of resources. The fact that he listened to what I wanted to do and was able to provide me with alternative options made the project even better. He was able to match the new roofline to that of the existing house. My interactions with John have been very positive. I would not and do not hesitate to recommend John to family and friends who are looking for a competent, qualified contractor/builder. You will find him very attentive to your building needs and he will provide you with quality work at a very competitive rate.

Our experience with Patrick deserves 5 stars. He installed our kitchen cabinets, they look great. He was very clean and thorough, and quick because it only took one day. I called him back to look at a leaking backdoor and he fixed that too, now he is my go to.

Glen installed carpet in four of my bedrooms, and installed prefinished hardwood flooring in my kitchen/dining room, hallway, and parlor. He was very professional, clean, and punctual. He really educated me on the technical aspects of flooring installation. He isn't the least expensive installer I found, but it was worth paying a little more for his level of professionalism.

I hired Nobleport Contracting, Michael O'Rourke, to paint my kitchen, walls, trim & baseboard. The baseboard was especially important to me because I had just gone through the first year of training for my bernese mountain dog puppy, and unfortunately, the pup did some extensive damage on my baseboard with his beautifully white razor sharp teeth. In other words, it needed to be replaced, Michael did a really great job, he matched the paint & base board perfectly, from the walls to the trim, to the base board. Most importantly, he was clean and respectful of my space. There was never a time where I had to clean up after him, which may not sound all that important, but to me it truly was. His painting skills were impressive, the painting of the walls were incredibly consistent, smooth and no holidays were ever visible. All in all the project went extremely well, he finished in a timely manner, was consistent in his work ethic and above all was clean and neat. He was always on time and the quality was remarkable. If another project presents itself, I would not hesitate to contact Michael at Nobleport Contracting.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Do you need to clean your air ducts?

Air duct cleaning is done by heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) professionals. The pros use industrial-strength, truck-mounted vacuums and powerful brushes and hoses to clean inside the metal ducts that make up your forced air heating and cooling system. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends duct cleaning if there is “substantial visible mold growth inside hard surface ducts, ducts that are infested with vermin such as rodents or insects, or ducts that are clogged with excessive amounts of dust and debris and/or particles are actually released into the home from your supply registers.”

You should also have air ducts cleaned after recent water contamination or water damage to prevent mold; after renovations or remodeling to ensure debris and dust didn’t settle in the vents and ducts; if you are having problems with allergies or asthma; or when you are moving into a newly purchased home, especially if the previous owners smoked or had pets. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) recommends getting your air ducts cleaned every three to five years, or every two to three years in regions where homeowners use their air conditioning and heater for many months of the year, while the EPA suggests homeowners have duct cleaning done as needed.

How often should you get your air ducts cleaned?

How often you should clean your air ducts depends on your situation. If you or someone in the home has asthma or is acutely allergic to certain airborne materials or pollen, regular duct cleaning may be helpful. The Environmental Protection Agency doesn’t have an official position on the necessity of air duct cleaning unless the ducts have been contaminated by rodents, insects or mold, or you are aware of particles blowing out through the vents. The EPA recommends you have your air ducts cleaned on an as-needed basis. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) suggests having air ducts cleaned every three to five years.

Be cautious with companies that offer “whole house air duct cleaning,” urges the NADCA. The company may be using unscrupulous tactics to upsell you once they get started. Before any work begins, always clarify in writing what the job entails and what the cost will be. To protect yourself against fraud, read customer reviews and verify that your HVAC cleaning service has applicable licenses and certifications.

How much does it cost to replace air ducts in a house?

If your air ducts have been damaged, you’ll need to replace them. The national average air duct replacement cost is $150-$280, which may not include materials. Factors such as duct material, labor, location of ducts and linear feet of ductwork will all affect your final costs. Labor costs will vary based on how accessible the ducts are and what material your ducts are made of. The least expensive duct material is a flexible, non-metallic ducting that costs approximately $1-$2 per linear foot. Flexible aluminum is generally more expensive and stronger than non-metallic ducting. Stainless steel ducting is the strongest, the least flexible (meaning installing it typically has higher labor rates), and usually the most expensive. An average price for air duct replacement could range between $35 and $55 per linear foot, including basic materials and labor. A typical single-family home has 6-10 duct runs; replacing or installing one duct run could average $150-$250 for labor.

How much does it cost to have your air ducts cleaned?

If you’re concerned about dust, allergens or mold, it may be time to have your air ducts cleaned. The national average cost for air duct cleaning ranges from $190 to $250. Air duct cleaning costs will vary based on a number of factors such as your location in the country, the age and condition of your air ducts, the number of linear feet to be cleaned, and any repairs your ducts may need. HVAC cleaning companies should clearly outline what is included in their services and at what rate, so always make sure you understand and have a written agreement before work begins. Here are some examples of average air duct cleaning costs:

      • Tiered pricing for different levels of service:
        • Standard cleaning: $100, which may include truck-mounted industrial vacuums, high-pressure air wands and air snakes to clean all supply and return vents, branch lines, and main trunk lines.
        • Advanced cleaning: $200, which may include standard cleaning services, plus rotobrush or viper clean sweep in the main trunk lines.
        • Ultimate cleaning: $400, which may include advanced cleaning, plus insertion of a viper microline into all vents to force debris down the branch lines and into the main trunk lines, to be handled by the viper clean sweep. Typically, all ductwork surface is contacted, before-and-after photos are provided, and the furnace is cleaned.
      • A flat rate for unlimited vents: $289.
      • Additional fees for larger houses: $20 for each additional 500 square feet over 2,500.

How long does it take to get your ducts cleaned?

The amount of time air duct cleaning takes can depend on how extensive your duct system is, how old your air ducts are, and whether they have ever been cleaned. On average, expect a standard size home (between 2,000 and 3,000 square feet) to take 2-5 hours for one to two technicians to clean. Here are the proper protocol and equipment you should expect from a professional duct cleaning service, as recommended by the Environmental Protection Agency:

      • All doors and access ports opened to ensure the entire duct system is inspected and cleaned.
      • Thorough system inspection prior to cleaning to identify possible asbestos-containing materials. If asbestos is present, specially trained and equipped contractors must do the removal.
      • Use of approved vacuum equipment that exhausts particles outside of your house. If the vacuum exhausts inside your home, it must be HEPA equipment.
      • Furnishings and carpet covered and protected.
      • Soft-bristled brushes only on fiberglass duct board and sheet metal ducts internally lined with fiberglass.
      • Ductwork properly protected.
      • Adherence to guidelines and practices set down by the National Air Duct Cleaners Association.
