I did not hire him for the party and went with a band outside of thumbtack. But while I was dealing with him, he was very responsive. Thank you

Loved that Adam is both a musician and a DJ! He was able to play acoustic for our ceremony and then turn our reception into a party as a DJ. Took the decision of band or DJ completely out of the equation because he is truly the best of both worlds. He was easy to work with about song choice and various other customizations. He also MC'ed our reception and kept everything flowing. Would highly recommend him to anyone looking for a musician and/or DJ.

We feel so very lucky to have Kris's talents available to us. Where else could you find someone who has toured and played with well-known drummers and bands so close to home? Our son has taken his playing to the next level with Kris and learned new skills and gotten familiar with the different styles of drumming. Kris also passes along his extensive technical knowledge so that students learn to maintain their sets themselves. Besides being a true professional, Kris is a wonderful person whose teaching style and over-all personality makes learning from him both fun and enjoyable. He loves what he does and it shows!

David works with our twin girls (7 years old). All they ever wanted to do was play guitar and he's got them playing songs they love. They can also read music, strum chords, and are actually starting to write songs. The growth since last fall is incredible. He's a great teacher and his Beatles tribute band is spot on. Def check them out!

Tom Bruhl was incredibly professional and made my job of organizing so easy! He was a standout entertainer for both the kids and adults. We could not have been any happier with Tom and hope he'll come back for our event next year! I highly recommend him as your DJ and One Man Band - your party guests will thank you all night!

I studied with Felix for a couple years, and it was an amazing experience. After studying at Berklee College of Music in Boston, he went on to play in several noteworthy bands including Shockra and The Heavy Metal Horns and plays professionally frequently today. Felix is equally at home with rock, jazz, funk, and folk and will take the time to understand your guitar-playing goals. Want to learn to play by ear? Check. Read music and play from scores? Check. Immerse yourself in theory? Check. Felix's knowledge of the guitar is encyclopedic, he's patient, and he will make the journey fun. But most of all, with your commitment, you *will* learn to play the guitar.

After taking piano lessons from a traditional piano teacher for 6 years, I needed a change. Steve was the perfect choice. He played at a local piano bar at the time, and I wanted to hone my skills so I could play in bands, too. I assumed he would teach me the ins and outs of chords and then send me off to conquer the music scene, but it turned out he had a real mastery of musical theory, and he held it to a very high importance. He began each of our lessons with music theory - all the basics that make a solid foundation for any musician. Then, he introduced a new concept to something I had been doing all along. He gave me sheet music to learn - tough teaching songs - then after a time, began blocking my view of my hands with paper while playing. Eventually, he'd block my hands and take away the music, teaching me a very important part of playing anything in front of people. You have to know the music inside and out. You can't rely on the sheets in front of you. That's the only way you can truly immerse yourself in the song and let your fingers do the playing. His fees were reasonable and the time was very well-spent. You have to do the work between lessons to get the most out of them. Steve has a true mastery of live performance on every level, and it would behoove any musician, young or old, beginner or skilled, to spend a year in his teaching. We can all benefit from it. I certainly did. I've been in various bands, ever since, and I haven't looked back except to remember who helped me get here.

From day one, Gary was a pleasure to work with. I have never worked with a vendor who was so speedy in responding to emails with helpful information. Not only did we love his style of music, but he really knew how to get the crowd moving. Our initial musician for our event fell through and I'm sure glad he did because we couldn't have been more pleased with how wonderful Gary and his band were. He even came up with a song about my five year old on the spot - a memory none of us will ever forget! If you are looking for professional musicians, a set list with a wide range, and someone who can engage the crowd and perform accordingly, look no further. You won't be disappointed!

I first heard them at the 2014 Boston Jazz Fest and I hired them for a reception. They were a last minute fill in for the original band we hired. We were all really glad they were able to do the thing. They were amazing. They supplied a range of jazz for the cocktail and dinner period and easily moved into some funky Motown and Isaac Hayesish tunes that kept the dance floor moving.

Java Jive is the band you MUST hire for your wedding or other event. They are extremely professional and incredibly easy to deal with - available quickly and easily by phone and email. Don was a pleasure to work with, and his experience shows through his careful attention to detail in how you want your event to go. The band is AMAZING, and your guests will want to dance and do anything except sit down!! Their repertoire is impressively extensive, and they can learn anything. We absolutely loved them at our wedding, as did our guests, young and old. We had the pleasure of hearing them perform and two prior non-wedding events, and every time, guests have left saying, "wow that band was amazing!" You simply must hire them - they did a fantastic job!

David: “I had SEVERAL people, dozens, tell me that the band was awesome which I knew would happen but many people said “I feel like I’m at a rock concert - I am so into the music.” Just awesome. Everyone spoke about every part of the band too. “The horn guys are amazing” “That drummer is SICK!” “That’s one of the best guitarists I’ve ever heard live” (Billy Jean - I mean come on - that guitar bit at the end was just mind blowing), and on and on. And as far as the singers connecting with the audience, it was unreal. I mean unreal. They made every person feel special. I know I shouldn’t but I felt proud for picking Downtown Fever! -Julie and Tyson Schoezel”

      About

The Band Formed in 2005, Songs for Ceilidh combine Irish, Scottish, and Canadian Maritime Celtic influences with American heartland roots and acoustic pop/rock. Their original music includes traditionally inspired Celtic melodies and modern narratives, with an emphasis on high energy, upbeat rhythms. Their name says it all; Ceilidh [Kay-Lee] is a foot-stomping, high-energy party. In other words, a rip-roaring good time! “You are never quite sure what they are going to throw in,” says a fan. “One minute, they are playing ‘Whisky in the Jar’, and the next the fiddle is belting out the solo from ‘Stairway to Heaven’. It makes for a very interesting show!” The four band members each bring their own specific influence. Hailing from Canada, Scott sings and plays the acoustic guitar, bodhran, and tin whistle. Bryan plays fiddle with a blend of American and Celtic styles, sings backup, and plays guitar. Chuck keeps the music moving with his steady twelve-string and banjo strumming, while Jon ties it altogether with Djembes, bongos, and any other percussion the music needs. The four unite to bring a truly unique sound to the music. The Philosophy Songs For Ceilidh was not formed to be a cover band. Their interpretation of traditional Celtic classics owes more to Cape Breton influences than it does to traditional Irish. While respecting the original music, their arrangements reflect a modern sensibility and desire to ‘keep it moving’! Their ever growing body of original works reflects this same balance of tradition and innovation. While they bring a solid repertoire of traditional Celtic classics, don’t expect to hear ‘Danny Boy’ or ‘Irish Eyes’. Lively and fun is the emphasis. Upbeat classics and originals, with the occasional love song or ballad, provide a sound, which appeals to all. “We’re looking for people to enjoy themselves as much as we do! That’s what it’s all about!” The Resume Since 2005, Songs For Ceilidh has become a local favorite in Massachusetts and are known in Rhode Island, Connecticut, and Maine. Performances include the Worcester Irish Festival, the Worcester St. Paddy’s Day Parade, and the 2008 Worcester Flag Day Festival. They have also performed in numerous town concerts and local pubs and have been featured on the Internet, local radio, and television. The Music In 2009, Songs For Ceilidh released their first full-length CD “Beneath the Waves”. Highlander Radio called it ”...a swell of deep-sea musical Celtic heaven...ten tracks of Celtic bliss.” In 2008, Songs For Ceilidh’s demo CD was released. Two of the songs, ‘Jolly Rover’ and ‘The Catch’, both became most requested songs in the month of April on Highlander Radio. In St. Paddy’s Day 2008, the Band’s performance at Mickey Cassidy’s Irish Pub was recorded, and selected tracks are available at their website. Today, the band is actively writing and preparing for their second CD. Songs For Ceilidh is available for all types of engagements. Contact the band using the information below.

In their third year, the band is unleashing their unique electro-funk-jazz sonic explorations throughout the northeast, having performed at venues, such as The Middle East Downstairs (Boston), Nectar's (Burlington, VT), Sullivan Hall (NYC), and Cafe Campus (Montreal, QC). Insigniya is ever-increasingly devoted to creating a unique music that pushes the envelope in all genres, while sharing a collective love for music, positive progression, and good times with the masses.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

      • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
      • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
      • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.
