Fun Face Express is a top notch company! Everything was perfect for our 4 year-old's birthday party. McKenna was our artist, and was so sweet and patient with the kids (even when two of them wanted do-overs of some sort, not because her work wasn't awesome the first time but because they are 4 years old and they had a new idea). She had a day off but committed to coming and doing the party. We are so appreciative! We had a bunch of families there, ooh-ing and aah-ing over McKenna's work. They asked for the name of the company, so I'm already recommending Fun Face. Along with McKenna's talent, the staff were so responsive and helpful leading up to the party. I rated our experience a 10 out of 10 and will definitely call on Fun Face Express again in the future and will continue to recommend them to friends and colleagues.

I had a non traditional henna tattoo request to "decorate" a 12 in scar that runs down the front of my leg. I didn't want anything really heavy, just something airy for the summer. Sonal did a great job and I was quite pleased, but it was one of those horrible hot humid days and the plastic wrap that on the design to protect it caused the henna to melt and bleed on the way home. Although I removed it once I got there, the top part of the design became much heavier and obscure. Not her fault, rather the weather. I would definitely go back.

Rachel does fantastic henna! We had her come for a couple hours to do henna for everyone for a graduation party. She was super easy to work with for scheduling, answered all of our questions, and made our party lots of fun. Both the little kids & the adults got beautiful henna done. She brought books for people to pick designs & was able to come up for fun stuff on the fly (like a sheep design!). The henna paste she used was high quality. Usually the dried paste flakes off fast for me, but this stayed on my hand even overnight! The stain left behind was a beautiful orange and darkened up to a deep dark brown. The stain lasted a long time & I got lots of compliments everywhere I went. We're already talking about when we can have another party & do more henna!

I take inspiration from everywhere, as most artists do, however, I have yet to see any other artist who interprets quite like me. I have a definite style of drawing/design, but realism with a twist of surrealism and the grotesque is the categories I most likely fall into. I can imitate any style desired, though, should mine not be desired.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does a henna tattoo stay on?

Typically a henna tattoo stays on anywhere from one to three weeks. Henna artists work with henna paste, also called mehndi, which dyes the skin for a short period of time. An important part of Indian culture, the use of henna has become increasingly popular in the United States, with henna artists providing henna tattoos for weddings, as event entertainment and for other special events. Henna artists typically apply their designs to the palms and backs of the hands, the wrists, up to the elbows, and from the feet up to the knees. To preserve the rich color of your henna tattoo and help it set, avoid water as much as possible within the first 24 hours of application. The color will be richest during the first week. Brides may want to have their henna tattoos applied one or two days before the wedding for optimal results.

What is the meaning behind henna tattoos?

Henna tattoos, as they are called in the United States, have a long tradition in Indian, African and Middle Eastern cultures. For centuries, the leaves of dried henna plants have been ground into a fine paste to be used as a temporary and nontoxic skin dye. This form of body decoration has been used in celebrations, weddings and ceremonial rites of passage in many cultures. Often in Hindu weddings, henna artists decorate the hands and feet of the bride (and at times the groom) with intricate designs. In some Muslim traditions, henna artists paint women with henna designs as they are in their final stages of pregnancy. In the United States, popular culture has adopted this beautiful body art and henna artists provide brides (and sometimes grooms) with temporary henna tattoos. Henna artists are also a popular choice for entertainment at corporate events, birthday parties, bachelorette parties and festivals. Henna artists may charge anywhere from $10 to $300 per hour.

How much does it cost to get a henna tattoo?

Nationally, the average cost to hire a henna artist is between $100 and $180 per hour. Rates will vary by location and the experience of the individual henna artist; it’s possible to find artists who charge less than $50 per hour. Some henna artists charge an hourly rate, especially for corporate events or festivals where they are providing service to multiple people within an hour. They may also charge flat rates for bridal and wedding services or special events. Here are some examples of average cost:

      • Hourly rate: $65-$85 or more per hour. Price is dependent on event size and number of attendees.
      • Starting rate for minimal palm designs: $15 or more.
      • Henna tattoos covering the hands and wrist and bottom of feet up to the ankle: $175.
      • Henna tattoos covering the hands to the mid-arm and feet to above the ankle: $300.
      • Henna tattoos covering the hands to the elbow and the feet to the knee: $450.
