Thank you Stella Construction. I had the company remodel my kitchen. New hard wood floors, counter tops, cabinets, tile back splash, window casings, baseboard, and paint. The back splash now absolutely compliments the counter tops and cabinets. Everything came out perfect!

We hired Boston Best Construction (BBC) to complete a kitchen island and small remodel project in our Boston condo. We consulted with several contractors and ultimately settled on BBC due to the competitive price, references, and availability. We worked with Eduardo and his team throughout the duration of the project. We are very happy with the outcome. The Quote & Final Price. Of those we contacted, BBC took the least amount of time to get us a quote. The quote was also the most detailed of the ones we received. Eduardo included renderings of the island remodel and surrounding space as well as a detailed breakdown of materials and labor. The quoted price was very competitive — it was among the lowest. BBC completed the project for the quoted price in spite of a few unexpected complications we encountered along the way. Quality of work. We are extremely happy with the quality of the work performed. We were very up front about certain key requirements going into the project and Eduardo did a very good job making sure to adhere to them. For example, we wanted to make sure the island cabinetry matched our older, discontinued, cabinetry. Eduardo was able to match our own cabinets very closely without impacting the price. We also had a number of other very specific requirements regarding cabinetry arrangement and Eduardo stuck to it perfectly. We got what we asked for. Communication and experience. Eduardo and his crew kept the dialogue going throughout the project. We spoke regularly via telephone, email, and text message. They listened to our questions and concerns along the way and made adjustments based on our input. They were very good at explaining when certain things made sense and when they didn’t. Eduardo and his team were not afraid to speak up when they thought their input would lead to a better result. For example, Eduardo and one of his team members (Daniel) had some suggestions about how to cut the granite to wrap around some steam pipes adjacent to the island. This resulted in a much better finished appearance and the additional cost was negligible. We are glad we listened to their suggestions as the final result is better than we had expected. We had a great experience with BBC and would use them again. We recommend them for anyone considering any type of project for their home.

Jeff responded quickly to my inquiry for siding repair and setup a time to come look at the project. We agreed on the terms and Jeff and crew quickly completed the work and did a fine job. There was a minor leak as result of having to disconnect a water valve that, upon notifying Jeff , he had his plumber out to fix within an hour. Recommended.

Mr. DeOliveira was very professional. He gave me a quote and stuck to it. He showed up on time and did a great job installing s cement pad in the front of my house. He came back the next day and finished the work. Finally he had to come back a week later and repair the job after a truck backed into the house and damaged the concrete. Mr. DeOliveira came right out promptly and fixed the damaged pad at no charge. I would highly recommend DeOliveira Construction. Tom Steeves, Bellingham, MA

We hired Russell to build a new newel post for our stairwell and install a new railing and spindles. We had sawed off the old newel post during a home construction project a year ago and did not have a picture or materials from the prior post. Russell was able to create a beautiful newel post from scratch which looks better than anything we could have bought in store. He was also committed to ensuring that the style of the post, railing, and spindles matched with our house. At our request, Russell returned to adjust something according to our wishes and even made suggestions to make the whole thing look even better. Russell was professional, honest, and came in at a great price. We appreciated his patience and willingness to deliver a product that we loved. We enjoyed working with Russell and love our new stair railing and hope to use him for future house projects!

My husband and I have been home-owners for more than 35 years. This summer, Desire Construction cleaned up our backyard, extended our patio with pavers, and fixed a drain pipe. This was hands-down the best experience with a home contractor that we have ever had. Mr. Guimaraes responded promptly to our request for a quote. We had to wait several weeks while his company completed other jobs, but Mr. Guimaraes contacted us in advance of their start date. He came when he said he would, and his group worked hard and completed the job in a timely manner. We are very pleased with the results and would definitely hire him again.

We had our roof done with them. The owner of this business is a wonderful man. They responded to my initial call immediately and got an appointment within a few days for a free estimate. They came on time and the estimate was emailed to me within a few days. We decided to go with Rainstone construction because of their responsiveness. On the day of work they showed up on time, worked quickly and cleaned up after finishing. We found them reliable, professional with reasonable pricing. We enjoyed working with them and will surely recommend Rainstone to our friends.

We have been using K&S Remodeling for over a year to do various construction and maintenance and have been extremely happy working with them. They did a major repair of ice damage from the winter of 2015, they built a large 3 bay shed, the rebuilt one of our original 1920 outbuildings and then they remodeled the kitchen and bath of our 1870's farm house. These projects all entailed some serious construction/reconstruction. We had to remove an exterior wall, shore up the supports in the basement, and install support beams where we opened up exterior walls. All the work was done diligently with an eye towards perfection at each step of the process. Not only would I recommend them to my friends, I fully intend to use them for more projects.

This is truly a next gen experience! My family and I moved into a home that needed all the windows replaced. The web user experience was extremely easy to use, straight forward and we were able to visually see the windows we were buying. Like any renovation there's always a hiccup (we found unforeseen water damage when replacing old window sills). The entire team at Renoviso treated us fairly and made sure the finished product met our standards. 9 months later we're truly enjoying our new windows. The quality and ease of use is great. Other than windows I can't wait to see what other services they'll come out with in the future.

We hired Ransford to put a deck on the back of our house. Ransford was a pleasure to work with. He met with us to initially get our thoughts on our project and immediately sketched up a rough view of the deck attached to the house and a detailed breakdown of the work that was needed including plans, inspections, materials and removal of old stairs. We made some modifications and drew up an agreement. We made one change to the project after we started which was to make the deck wider. Ransford was able to accomodate us and work with our surveyor and the town of Needham to amend the plans. He and his crew worked through some extremely hot days and built our deck quickly and professionally. We were thrilled with his attention to detail and how much work he put in to building a strong foundation and framing. He also made some suggestions on the layout of the pattern on the decking which we really appreciate. We love the deck. We would not hesitate to recommend Ransford to anyone who asks and we have already made plans to have him do other work on our house.

First hired him to fix some rotting trim on my house. Worked quickly and did a good job. The cost was where I thought it should be, but not where others had quoted me. After that, I hired him to do interior painting for me. Again, good job at a great price. Kept adding things for him to do as the job went on. Looking forward to the spring to get him back to do more work.

I used GoPro Construction for a kitchen project. I needed my wood cabinets repainted and brought back to life. John Bowles came to my house and did a terrific job. He is a great worker, knows what he is doing and above all is a kind and respectful man whom I trusted to come into my home.

This was one of the best Home Remodeling experiences we have ever had. We worked with Ely Jimenez of Del Cid Design and Construction. Ely does the best workmanship we have ever seen. He is wonderfully communicative and professional. He provided us with photographs of every single detail that he worked with. He was very flexible, patient, and creative. He transformed our old-fashioned bathroom into a beautiful, modern bathroom. He somehow fit a large, working washer and dryer into a closet. He is an excellent general contractor who works well with multiple sub-contractors. We 100% recommend Del Cid Design and Construction for any home remodeling task, no matter how big or small. Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do construction project managers do?

Construction project managers help in all stages of your construction project, starting from the very first step. Typically paid a percentage of a total project cost, they are part of the design and planning process and help ensure seamless communication between the design parties and the construction team. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, their scope of work includes preparing cost estimates, budgets and work timetables; interpreting and explaining contracts and technical information to other professionals; reporting work progress and budget to clients; collaborating with architects, engineers and other construction pros; selecting subcontractors and scheduling and coordinating their tasks; responding to work delays, emergencies and other problems; and ensuring compliance with legal requirements, building and safety codes, and other regulations.

The work of construction project managers may seem very similar to that of general contractors, but there are some critical differences. One difference is that, unlike most general contractors, project managers are not engaged in the actual construction — they are onsite overseeing the work of subcontractors. Another key difference is that project managers are hired during the design phase, while general contractors are hired after plans have been made. The project manager is generally paid a percentage of the total project cost, while the general contractor is more typically paid according to the bid they gave to build your project.

How do I find out if a contractor is licensed?

It’s important to know if your project requires work by a licensed professional, as licensing laws can vary by state, locality, and job details. You can find general licensing information online at the government websites that handle occupational licensing for a given profession in your state or location. Some states designate a project cost over which you have to hire a licensed contractor. To find qualified licensed contractors, search your state’s licensing board. For example, in California, the Department of Consumer Affairs operates a searchable database through the Contractors State License Board. In some states, contracting licenses are provided at a regional level. You can find links to specific databases on BRB Publications’ Occupational Licensing page. Red flags that a contractor may not be licensed or may be providing an expired or false license number are unreasonably low bids or a request for complete payment upfront. How much does a project manager charge per hour?

You may choose to hire a construction project manager for your residential or commercial project. For the hands-on homeowner who wants to be involved in home construction but isn’t comfortable hiring subcontractors, a construction project manager can oversee these relationships and supervise labor. Typically, construction project managers charge a fee that is a flat percentage of the total construction project cost. This may range from 10 percent to 15 percent, depending on the company and the services they provide. This means a $30,000 home remodel project would have a construction project management fee of $3,000-$4,500. Hiring a construction project manager generally precludes the markup on subcontractor labor charged by a general contractor. The drawback to this choice is that, unlike a general contractor, the construction project manager won’t be financially responsible for the work of the subcontractors. For larger projects, you may hire a construction project manager who will also hire a general contractor. This provides the benefits of the general contractor along with the management services of the project manager, who will be on board from the beginning. The construction project manager will be involved in the design phase and work with the architects and the building crew, facilitating a smoother overall process.

What is a contractor license number?

A contractor license number is proof that your contractor is operating their business legally, that they have the proper documentation required by your state or region, and that they are competent in their area of work (electrical, plumbing, construction, etc.). Licensed contractors should freely advertise their contractor license number. If not, you can request it before considering them for hire. You can also research your contractor using their license number. The database for your state will indicate the field they are licensed to work in; whether they are up to date on insurance, workers’ compensation and bonds; and whether they have any consumer complaints issued against them. If the licensed contractor you are hiring does not have employees, they are not required to carry workers’ compensation. Each state or region will have their own database for licenses, such as the State of Oregon Construction Contractors Board. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.
