Jeff Marrazzo of All-Star Remodeling and Painting beautifully re-finished for us a very large back hall with enormous built-in cabinets. He repaired the ceiling, covered the walls with new paneling and painted all. The area is now transformed! He is a very fine carpenter and painter. He is meticulous about his work yet very efficient and very neat. Also, he's a very personable, clean-cut man who was very easy to have around the house. I learned he has many skills. We will happily engage him again when we have various future needs. (He really liked our indoor Burmese cat and was very careful not to let her outside, as he was in out so often cutting panelling in the driveway.) Maureen O'Halloran, Newton Center

I hired Zion Painting to paint my entire condominium, including ceilings, walls, woodwork and radiators. They stripped the doors and radiators which had not previously been properly prepped. They sanded down walls and woodwork and filled in and caulked cracks before painting to a smooth finish. They did a very thorough job. The price was more than fair. I could not have asked for a better contractor than Zion Painting. The painters were careful, competent, trustworthy and reliable. They were careful to protect all areas with drop cloths while they worked. Each night they cleaned up/vacuumed behind themselves and left the place as tidy as possible. I feel very comfortable giving them a strong reference.

Troy did an excellent job painting the interior of my house. I had dark stained wood that needed many coats of paint and it looks great now. He was responsive, punctual, and his team is great. I'm very very happy with the work. A few things I would note: - They didn't paint the inside of my doors. I do not care at all and don't need the inside painted. But if this is something that would bother you, mention it and I'm sure Troy would take care of it. - They painted around the hardware on my built in cabinet/drawers instead of taking them off. They did a great job painting around it - it looked perfect. I should have taken the hardware off before they painted because I'd planned on getting new hardware. Again, this isn't something that bothered me but it's good to know.

Dave has worked on a number of projects for us. Most have been on family antiques and we were extremely pleased with not only his work but his ability to be inventive when a repair was not straight forward. We would highly recommend Dave for any woodworking challenge.

This post is long overdue but I did want to recognize Marks excellent work. This was a small woodworking job that required both creative solutioning and fine cabinetry skills. Mark was timely, skilled and very pleasant to work with at a reasonable cost. I would definitely work with mark on other projects.

Mike recently created a built-in bookcase/entertainment center for our rec room. We are thrilled with his workmanship and cannot say enough about his professionalism and woodworking skills. Throughout the process Mike was meticulous in his planning and responsive to our questions. During the installation of the unit he was punctual and he left the place clean and orderly after he had finished his work each day. The unit is well built, beautifully finished, and is exactly what we had envisioned for the space. I would highly recommend him to anyone who is looking for a skilled woodworker.

You know it's crazy that when you read reviews and all the ratings were Five Stars then you read a review that seems to me like a vindictive person. To me it's like "Wow" I didn't have any issues with JDQ. I do realize that there are some control freaks out there that once you finally put a stop to all the belittling and complaining they have to some way shape or form try to destroy a good hard worker reputation. When I was calling around for a professional handyman and builder I was so out of my realm. I spoke with many different businesses, most left me feeling like I didn't know what I was talking about and crazy for some projects I wanted complete. I even had them come to my home and what a mistake that was. Stone-age coming back in full force! I was at my dentist and there was a JDQ business card, first thing I saw that made me comfortable was that Mr. Quintal is a veteran, then I called him and what a pleasure! Of course after the last companies I spoke to I was gun shy to ask for what I want completed. Mr. Quintal suggested that he should come to my home and have me walk him through all the projects I would like to have completed. When he pulled in my driveway, about 15 minutes early, he had A tape measure, pencils and crazy builder paper. He walked me through all the steps that he would have to do to complete my projects, never leaving anything out. He didn't make me feel like I was a moron and he was very respectful. When we walk through some of the steps for the project the suggestions that he had were brilliant! I would have never of thought of it, and deftly didn't see it on Pinterest. I felt so comfortable with JDQ that once we agreed on which product to start first I let Mr. Quintal have a free-for-all to add any ideas that he seemed to fit. Before any adjustments were needed he would run it by me first and try to find the best bargain for the supplies. He is definitely the best woodworker/builder besides my father and that setting the bar pretty high! So thank you Mr. Quintal for fitting me in while you were working with that crazy lady, your full calendar and making my project dreams come true and even better that I first imagined. Now when I have company over to my house I get so many compliments on the work completed it makes me gitty and want more completed. I genuinely feel that JDQ is worth every cent I paid him. Everybody out there before you call anybody else call Mr. Quintal and I can guarantee you will not be disappointed. So thank you JDQ for all your hard work and sweat poured into my home. Your forever future customer sincerely, PIC! Happy Veteran's Day!

My wife and I recently purchased a distressed chest from an antique shop. While we loved it's size and shape, the exterior was badly damaged. We took the chest to Ryan at SNH Woodworks hoping he might be able to repair some of the damaged wood and apply some new finish. What we got in return was far beyond our expectations. Ryan was able to restore the chest to pristine condition while maintaining its distressed look. We were amazed it was the same chest we had brought there! While the pictures don't do it justice, the stain/paint Ryan used even has a reddish undertone in certain light. It is even more impressive than we could have imagined. We could tell Ryan was excited for us to see his work, and he certainly didn't disappoint. We're not sure who left happier! P.S. We liked Ryan so much we asked him to build us a house for ourdoor cat. When we went to pick it up.... see attached photos.... I got a cat mansion! Again, far exceeding expectations!

Attorney General Construction (Arcadio Gonzalez) has done high quality work at my two houses in 2012 and 2016. At the first house in Wellesley Attorney General Construction removed and replaced rotting wood around the exterior of the house, fixed ice dam damage and painted portions of the house. In each instance, the work was done to my satisfaction at a fair price. More recently in 2016 Attorney General Construction did even more work on my Natick house. This house suffered from significant water damage from ice dams and a burst pipe. In addition to the water mitigation services, Attorney General took out and replaced damaged ceilings and wood, repainted several rooms, added insulation and did several projects on the exterior of my house. While working on my walls, Arcadio noticed and pointed out to me that two large windows that another contractor installed were not put in properly which caused structural problems. Arcadio showed me exactly what the problem was and how he would fix it for me. He fixed and reinstalled the windows and did a very professional job. Much of the work that Attorney General Construction did made my house even better than it originally was. I was especially impressed by the woodwork improvements that were done for my kitchen beam! Overall, Attorney General Construction did a great job on both of my houses. If there was any part of the work that did not satisfy me originally, Arcadio made sure it was fixed to my satisfaction. In addition, Attorney General was reasonable with the prices I paid for the high quality work that was done. Because of my good experiences working with Arcadio Gonzalez at Attorney General Construction, I used them for multiple projects over the years and plan to continue using them in the future. I highly recommend Attorney General Construction's quality workmanship.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.
