Shujaur Rehman arrived exactly on time and he was supremely efficient and affable. I hired him to do some furniture assembly and to move some things that were too heavy for me. In the future, I will absolutely hire him to do other jobs around my apartment -- various repairs, painting of some walls, and hanging of artwork. I recommend him highly and enthusiastically. I am so glad to know that I can call on him in the future!

I am writing this review with complete satisfaction & happiness. Nilso & team came to a repair at my house organized and efficiently. He was prompt to assess the work, give an estimate and began the following week as promised despite the huge snowstorm. There was repair carpentry work from water damage and Nilso was able to stabilize a window, repair walls as well as fix my banister. Nilso noticed the loose railing and asked me if he could repair it for me. As a mother of 4, I appreciated how thoughtful this was for him to do. His team cleaned up thoroughly and were very respectful of our home and space. We feel he was priced reasonably and are more than happy with the work produced. We will definately be using Nilso again in the future and are happy to endorse his business. Thank you very much!

I run a home automation installation company, and we hired Darcio to patch multiple holes we had to make in a client's drywall. He patched all the holes beautifully, and repainted the areas so seamlessly that, once the paint dried, we couldn't even tell where the holes had been. It turned out we had more holes than originally expected, but Darcio was extremely understanding and didn't even charge us extra to patch the additional holes. He was also very flexible when we needed him to come back two more times to do additional work on short notice. Bottom line - he arrived right when he said he would, worked till the job was complete, and achieved amazing results that we never could have expected for twice the price. If you need drywall patched or walls painted, call Darcio now! You won't regret it!

John was extremely professional, courteous and punctual. His workmanship was excellent. This was a small job, but he didn't act like it wasn't worth his time - approached it with enthusiasm to have the opportunity to work with us. We hired John to patch/repair drywall, skim coat walls, and prime in a bathroom. VERY happy with his work, was very competitive in his rates, and WILL hire him again!

Steve helped me get my son moved into off campus housing by assembling our Ikea furniture, (an entertainment center, coffee table, nightstand, and desk). Additionally, he helped us out with a multitude of small repairs that were needed including replacing a toilet seat, changing front door locks, and replacing a light socket. He was punctual, professional and took pride in his work. Everything was completed with care and to perfection! He knows so much about so many things, that we only needed to have the 1 handyman help us with our projects. I highly recommend Steve for your projects. We will definitely be using him again in the future.

Zion completed the painting of both the exterior of our home as well as the internal ground floor. During the project some minor repairs were also made to exterior woodwork. The work was completed to a very high standard, and the team showed great care to ensure that the finish was to our satisfaction, during each step of the project. I plan to use them again when we complete future projects.

We have now used Troy for several projects which include restoration, tiling of floors, painting inside walls, and painting exterior of house. In each case we were well pleased with his work and impressed both with his handling of the projects and their end results. For the first project (painting the interior walls), Troy took the extra effort to prep the walls by removing excess wall paper and backing, patched and skim coated. After painting the walls they looked beautiful - smooth, clean lines, damage spots no longer visible. The exterior paint job was also done well. Again, Troy took the time to prepare the surfaces - scraping shingles and trim work, fixing / repairing shingles, finding the right primer (due to the poor condition of the shingles and old peeling paint). And again, with a coat of paint and clean lines around the trim the house looks vibrant - the neighbors loved it and commented on the good job he did. Troy also tiled the bathroom and kitchen floors which look great. The projects were performed in a timely manner, the areas kept clean as Troy didn't just do a job but took ownership and managed the projects. Once Troy took the project I could relax knowing that any issues that arose would be handled, I would be kept informed with updates and timeframes, and in the end impressed.

I have used Bright Corp repeatedly. They are responsible, honest hard-workers who return to correct and address any issue you have if develops. They are in the middle cost-wise, but you totally get your moneys worth and they don't skimp on quality materials or labor. They appear when they say they will and make themselves available for your convenience. Plus, they are talented beyond just being painters. They can actually repair things!

Erik replainted my 600 sq ft apartment that had about 3 decades of paint coats underneath that caused all sorts of cracking. He scraped all loose paint and plaster and the dug out cracks in the plaster to insure that they don't come back. Then he skim coated, primed and painted the walls. He was courteous, professional, fair, and detail oriented. He even caught a building leak that would've caused expensive damage to my apartment and the one above it. He was very self-sufficient and friendly to building staff and neighbors when I wasn't around. He also communicated the perfect amount so I knew what was going on, what the time table would be, and understood all the costs. Highly recommended.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

  • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
  • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

  • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
  • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
  • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
