Your burning questions: answered

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

What is considered a local move vs. a long-distance move?

Local moves are among the most common moves. Unlike a long-distance move, a local move is typically less than 50 miles and does not cross state lines. Generally, a local move only takes one day, and movers tend to charge by the hour.

The definition of a long-distance move may vary depending on the moving company. Generally, a long-distance considered to be any move of 400 miles or more. However, some say a long-distance move is over 50-100 miles.

Local Move

A move under 50 miles

Long-Distance Move

A move over 50-100 miles or over 400 miles; may also be called an “interstate move” or “out-of-state move”

Out-of-State Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “interstate move” or “long-distance move”

Interstate Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “out-of-state move” or “long-distance move”

Intrastate Move

A move that begins and ends in the same state, typically beyond 50 miles

Interstate moves require additional legal preparation and will incur additional costs for distance, the amount and weight of your items, the preparation required and various other factors. Moving companies tend to do an initial weighing of the truck, which you should be present for.

A move that crosses state lines is considered an interstate move or an out-of-state move. Contrast this with an intrastate move, which begins and ends in the same state, but is typically above 50 miles.

To determine whether your move is local or long-distance, contact the best movers in your area.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

Is it cheaper to move your stuff or buy new stuff?

It often makes more financial sense to buy new stuff when you have the chance to sell furniture to offset the cost. The cost of moving your current furniture can sometimes be more than buying new things, particularly if the furniture is large or cumbersome to move. You can sell furniture online, or make a furniture donation and deduct it from your taxes (if it qualifies as a charitable contribution). Some places near you may even offer free furniture pickup when you choose to donate.

If you have valuable furniture that would be costly to replace, however, it may be cheaper to move them. To find out which option is best for you, contact professional movers in your area to receive quotes and estimates.

Grateful for their help in our move. It wasn't a long haul. They showed up and treated our stuff with respect. They were very timely. No issues. Would use again if the same crew. At least one of this crew was a military veteran so it was very great addition to the professionalism.

Geoff and his team were absolutely awesome! Geoff was in regular contact up until move day and he and his team arrived early which was comforting to know all would go as planned. Geoff and his team were quick to get to work packing the truck and were swift in getting the job done while also being careful and considerate of us and our things. Unloading the truck and set up at the final destination went just a smoothly. I would highly recommend their services to anyone looking for conscientious hard workers!

Baystate express moved my one bedroom 3rd floor apt, no elevator to a 3rd floor with elevator apt. Very polite, very strong, and hard workers. The only reason not giving outstanding review is that one of the tables i wanted wrapped up as it was my great aunts which i love was not wrapped up entering the apartment as i request and they were also later then then had originally stated but they did keep in contact. All in all a good job and would definately use them again. John is a hard worker and wishing him all the best with his business.

I was not satisfied at all. Not only did they show up 6 hours later, alot of my stuff was damaged. I have been trying to get ahold of him to file a claim, as he told me to do annoyed that I was mad. He also tried to charge me more money than agreed upon, as they went over the time because John himself did very little work, leaving it to is helper, whose first day it was, and me. I did more work than he did, so the nerve of him to charge me more was nuts. I only went over because of him, and it was as if he was doing nothing on purpose for that reason. He kept claiming he was lost in my building on the elevator because he couldnt find the ground floor, as he went to the second floor, where his truck obviously wasn't. Not only did I have a miserable experience, but I learned from his helper that he had wanted to reschedule mine to the next day cause he was tired from the first moves, which would have really sent me over the edge. He couldn't pack the truck right either, causing him to have to stop and redo the whole thing at the second stop, even though I had been telling him he wasn't going to have room for what they were picking up there. He didn't handle delicate pieces with any regard, as glass table tops were not even wrapped, my mattress didnt get covered because he brought the wrong size, even though I had informed him of what size it was before he got to me. His indifferent attitude was appauling. It felt like I was getting "Punked" and I was waiting for TV cameras to pop out at any time -- it was that bad. I hired movers to take the stress off me and didn't expect to be doing as much work as them, advising on how to get furniture up the stairs, having my things broken because he wasn't careful, or dealing with the hassle of a horrible mover himself. They even came unprepared and didn't even have the appropriate tools, and they instead had to use my dolly to move it all. I have been trying to get ahold of John to file this claim, as he told me too, and get no response. He said the damages werent a big deal cause he has insurance and it would cover it, but no "I'm sorry" ever came out of his mouth. His helper on the other hand knew exactly what he needed to do and was very polite and apologizing the whole time, even though it was his first time ever working with John, and not something he normally ever does (he was called last minute in a pinch to help). In regards to communicating issues beforehand, he text me after he already was 2 hours late and said he was running behind, which I obvisouly realized since he wasn't there. When I responded and asked how long, he never replied. Two hours later I got a text saying he was leaving Canton and it would be about 20 minutes until he got to me. That came and went and he still wasn't there. An hour later he said again he was leaving and would be to me in 30 minutes, and arrived finally an hour after that, and said only that it was is previous stops fault, and that he had wanted to reschedule but his helper didn't think it was fair to me. I was grateful for the helpers attitude on that, since I would have definitely flipped out if after being strung along all day, and with my entire house packed, I was told he was to tired to show up that day at all, but he would get me the next day. I am beyond mad that I had so many pieces broken, not to mention having to fix the walls in my stairwell from all the damage he did there, and I can't get ahold of him now that he got his money to compensate me for my losses.

Communication up until the project was good. It led me to believe that this, like my dozen other successful projects on Thumbtack, would go smoothly. This morning drivers were late and called to confirm my address. I immediately corrected the number he was telling me but he wouldn't take that information and wanted me to call dispatch. A company shouldn't be having drivers call clients if there is a communication barrier. Prior to move date, (I kept all my dealing with the coordinator in writing) and on multiple occasions was told one price. Now the guys were pleasant, worked hard and everything was done pretty quickly. I am shown the invoice to sign and the cost written is higher than previously agreed upon (I had read comments before and another client had warned of this so I tried to make sure I wouldn't have an issue). I told the driver I was told said amount and gave him cash. He amended the total and I signed it. I immediately asked the coordinator for an explanation but wasn't given one. No less then half an hour later the drivers' number is calling my phone, 6 times in a row. I was away from my phone at the time. It's now mere hours later and I'm seeing all the continuous missed calls and turns out he left a voicemail. In said voicemail he identifies himself as this company's driver, which I knew from having met him in person earlier. he proceeded to say that I was a liar and he doesn't like people that lie on him. He claims that I said I paid more (which i didn't pay more and never said I did). He went on to say that he "knows my address and is coming back" and he doesn't like that. So I paid for work to be done, was inconvenienced with a wait and issues surrounding lack of ability to properly communicate and NOW, I am listening to this man's threatening and angry message indicating his intentions to literally come back to my house. I use this company to move some furniture in our home where I live with my young child and now I have to worry about our well being because someone again didn't understand what must have been said to him. My last message to the coordinator specified that I had asked OF HER why the quote she gave me was not what was expected of me upon receipt. This was in no way questioning the driver or what I had paid them. I'm more than upset at this point and will be making a formal complaint. I have done nothing wrong in this entire scenario and didn't deserve the wait and inconvenience (but it's a service industry, it happens), nor the inflated quote but how is this rectified? I get screamed at and threatened by a man that was just in my home and literally leaves a voicemail threatening to come back here. I wish I could rewind the clock and have used someone else. Moves are stressful in life and that is why we hire companies to assist us. I really don't need to be dealing with this aftermath right now and most importantly I want to warn potential customers to avoid these issues all together. I am notifying Thimbtack immediately as well as filing a complaint with the BBB. If only I could attach tha voicemail to this!!
