Richard was our savior when we were in a time-crunch to complete several tasks before moving into our new house. Even with a short timeline, he managed to get it done. Hardwood and tile flooring installation in the kitchen and bathroom, interior and exterior lighting installation, plumbing and electrical work, new hardware, and a beautiful backsplash. Richard Froais of Universal Home Renovation owes $130,000 in restitution for previous renovation fraud and has lost his contractor's license in Rhode Island. See the link below for a CBS I-Team exposé on his history. Their is always two sides to every bad review. ( Part One ) First off, I would like to apologize to you AGAIN for the bad experience you had with us. With this being said, I would I like to give a truthful response to your claims and givein the whole situation correct all your false claims. I'm a 30 year professional GC in the state of Ma as you were well aware of when you choose to use our company, when our former customer ( you ) cancels our contract as you said " because we were not able to meet the contracted date of completion & I missed a date for a meeting to get said project back on track ". A lot comes into play to not meet the dead completion date. This was due ( as you were well aware ) mostly to building permits being obtained in the City of Malden they took for ever, changes from the customer ( you ) and added work loads from unforeseen items not contracted for i.e, tile floor at front door, new ceiling in living room, new ceiling on 3rd floor etc. To make a long story short, we provided an estimate ( not a quote ) of tasks i.e bathroom remodeling, painting, hardwood flooring etc. They ( homeowners ) paid us in phases as the job went along and for the extra work not within the scope of signed contract , when they canceled the contract after I tried to do an amendment for completion date, they denied me. They (customer) went from the estimate ( not the contract ) sheet provided from the start and said we owed them money/refund for items started, but not completed. The contract shows no cost per tasks. We spent double the labor to get this homeowner into there new home because there old place was sold. We worked 3 weeks 7 days a week labor only, with 8 men and subs. When the homeowner & I couldn't meet on the numbers, they took over 4K in tools that we had on this project and put them in storage until we refund them the monies they feel is due. Homeowner, was told to do this by the City of Malden PD ( home owner claims ) as a way of leverage. Is this legal? No of course not. Total lie after speaking with the PD. As the officer told us, it is a civil matter and they wont get involved in civil maters. Homeowner goes on to say within the review stating we abandoned the project, another lie, why would we abandoned a project and leave our tools? Now they have told me they contacted the DA's office saying I committed fraud. According to this homeowner the DAs office is looking into this on a criminal fraud case and say I will be arrested. For fraud charge there has to be intent according to the DAs office, the only intent we had was finishing the project, so the DAs office is not interested in a fraud case, another lie all fabricated from the homeowner to scare us into doing all that work for nothing. Much has been written about contractors from hell. little attention is paid to the homeowner from hell, to the unreasonable, irrational and selfish demands that make us contractors crazy. For instance, within the homeowners review they make no mention on the hours spent with them before we even signed a contract or that they bought all the materials, some of it short and some of it late and even better, totally wrong. Yes, towards the very end I had to take a total of 5 days off due to my wife's developing cancer, even though I was still in touch with them with texts and emails my guys still were working while I attended to other equally important matters. Once this job was under way, the problem that most seems to trouble contractors like myself is client indecision. They were having problems with design, changing the whole scope of the project at one point. Change orders were a part of every day life for the 3 weeks we worked there. "The contractor can't proceed without certain information," PERIOD. "If I don't know what the floor finishing is going to be if it's going to be three-quarter-inch hardwood or a layer of plywood and half-inch tile, which would make it more like an inch and a quarter there's a lot of work I can't do. I can't hang the doors, I can't even plan what the stair structure is going to be like. If I'm a half-inch off on the height of the first tread because you decided to go with thicker or thinner flooring, you're going to fall on your face." Other problems with this client, they bought the materials themselves in an attempt to save money, then expect their the staff of Universal Home Renovations to deal with any problems that result; clients who constantly challenge their expertise; clients who call me on weekends or evenings about problems that can wait until a workday. This is the way this homeowner was acting toward the end when they terminated the contract with us. Lost money BIG time with this project and now this home owner has the gall to bash us on line in every-way they can. Lets please remember that Universal Home Renovations has an online rating of 4.5 stars out of 5 online. As for Rhode Island issue they put out their with in the review, lets just say that's not over yet. Our bookkeeping firm embezzled from the operating account causing the jobs in progress to come to a halt and most importantly, not get finished, due to lack of funds. The bookkeeping company is currently being investigated and hopeful we get reinstated in that state. Although they may be brilliant in terms of their own business which both are school teachers, when it comes to fixing a clogged toilet or a broken toilet that we were not even contracted for we fixed it for them for FREE most people would pick up the Yellow Pages they have one number, and they call me. We apologized privately both on the phone and in an email, theres something flagrantly inaccurate within their review. I just had to take this opportunity to nitpick at the inaccuracies within a review. We try an stay on top of customer service but in very rare instances things like this happen. This has become an overwhelming experience for both this homeowner and Universal Home Renovations, we tried making this right but the homeowner thought by posting and bashing us on line was a better approach. Trust and believe, there are also many unethical homeowners out here too. This set back, does not mean Universal Home Renovations will sit back and let this happen to us with out our side of the story, because really this review on there part is just a story told by an unreasonable and upset homeowner. We all hope here at Universal Home Renovations this will not deter your decision in using us on your next project. We have had many awesome experiences within the Thumbtack community over the years, as you can well tell from our rating.
- What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?Our system is pretty straight forward. Time & material period. Some contractors like to mark up as much as 50% on materials !

- How did you get started doing this type of work?My dad was a custom home builder, my grandfathers were master plumbers & electricians. You might say it was in my blood or I really did't have a choice. I like making dreams come true for clients.
