I liked that she was personable & friendly - unfortunately the cat did not. My choice now is deal with him vomiting as I take him to the vet for grooming or listen to him scream & howl here at home. I'm still thinking about it.

Julie is amazing! She came to a vet appointment with me because I'm unable to walk my very hyper pup. I recently broke my right humerus in 3 places. She walked Sadie, assisted the vet and vet tech the entire exam. She also, provided me with some great suggestions. I'm looking forward to working with her again.

We were fortunate to have met Joanne more than 10 years ago when our Cockatiel, Charlie, joined our family. Joanne taught us important things that we did not learn in any book that we read. Joanne clips Charlie's wings and nails for us. She goes above and beyond to accommodate our schedule, but truth be told, we so enjoy visiting her in her home and meeting new members of her family that we always want to bring Charlie there. We have never met anyone with such compassion for birds (and dogs and goats!) Once when Charlie got hurt, Joanne was our lifeline. She listened patiently to me, calmed me with her words, and instructed me on exactly what to do. Charlie recovered and I believe to this day that had we tried to transport him to the vet, he would not be with us today. We are only one family of dozens and dozens that Joanne helps, and yet she never fails to return our call or text almost immediately because her first thought is always the health and welfare of Charlie. Joanne is an amazing, caring person, who possesses volumes of knowledge from personal experiences, and that's what counts for us. Cleaning out the empty shells from Charlie's food on a daily basis so there is no mistaking whether he has an adequate amount food, washing his water dish thoroughly so there is no slime build-up, misting him regularly so that he is able to groom himself, how to make sure the water is warm for him - these important steps have helped keep Charlie healthy and happy. I have never seen that information in any book I read. Truly, we do not know what we would do without her. This is a great opportunity for us to say, thank you, Joanne!

My husband and I took Jim Helem's Pet Tech: Pet Saver & Pet CPR/First Aid class and found his seminar to be outstanding and highly informative--even for novices like we are. Jim has a friendly, knowledgeable teaching style that makes the information interesting and he gives plenty of time for hands-on practice of the various methods of CPR and first aid. We learned how to safely access situations to best care for a pet in need, The information he provides is great for both experienced animal professionals as well as pet owners looking to better know how to care for their own dogs to keep them safe and healthy--especially in emergency situations like choking, seizures, or if their are unresponsive. We also learned how to better care for pets throughout their daily lives through things like nutrition, dental care, exercise, and pet safety to improve their quality of life and to keep the pet healthy and safe. And the snout-to-tail assessment is an excellent way to know and document your pet's health to be informed of or alerted to any changes in their health. I found the class to be excellent and I learned so much that I feel I can use in practical application in my job as a in-home pet sitter. I feel more confident that if a situation were to arise with one of my pet guests, my husband or myself would be able to access and handle the situation in a safe and knowledgeable manner to help the hurt or ailing pet until they could be safely transported to a vet/hospital. I highly recommend Jim's course to any pet professional or pet owner to further their knowledge on pet CPR/First Aid to better prepared to care for their pet in an emergency situation or just to improve your everyday handling of your pet. Our pets depend on us so much and they are family, so a day to learn how to possibly save them and better care for them is so well worth it. And Jim is an amazing instructor. It is obvious he loves animals and his dogs are simply gorgeous and amazing! Take his class, you won't regret it. A five star experience!

All around amazing. I do not have to worry at all when these guys are taking care of my crew. They send me pictures and are so loving and attentive. They actually noticed that one of my dogs was off before I did- and I'm their vet:).

My 9 month old Doberman pup went to his first obedience class at Alpha Dog. We both learned alot, and Kendra was super helpful. He also goes to daycare there regularly. My dog is on seizure meds, and they make sure he is dosed on time if he needs it when he is there. They care a lot about the dogs in their care. My dog absolutely loves it. When we drive up, he is more excited than a kid arriving at Six Flags. We both recommend Alpha Dog.

We've known Kiwi for years and she has cared for our dogs many times. We trust her 100% and the dogs love her. Kiwi goes the extra mile and even got vet care arranged for a dog who got sick while we were away. We love that the dogs can stay in their own home where they are most comfortable and that there is someone to keep an eye on our home. We very highly recommend her!

Kendra has been watching my dog Cooper for 5 years now. I can't think of enough good things to say about her!! It is such a relief to go on vacation and have her stay at our house. Not only does she give my dog excellent care, somehow my house is cleaner then when I left! On one particular trip as we were leaving my dog had a little cough, a couple of days later it got worse and Kendra took him to the vet, picked up medicine and made sure he was well. When we came home he was back to normal. Kendra is always reliable she has never once cancelled and has actually gone out of her way to help us out on last minute trips or emergencies. Most importantly is how much my dog loves her! I have recommended Kendra to many friends and all have been thrilled with her services.

Cheryl and her carefully chosen helpers have cared for my family's pets for 15 years. I can't imagine a more caring, loving, reliable, and trustworthy petsitter agency. Cheryl's personal vet tech experience has been invaluable; one vacation, while we were on Martha's Vineyard, she diagnosed and took my cat in to the vet for an intestinal obstruction; Cheryl recognized that he wasn't eating well, and knew something wasn't right. She called me on the Vineyard to explain that she knew our cat was in trouble, and I gratefully asked her to take him to the vet, where indeed, he had an intestinal obstruction. She truly cares for your pets as if they were her own, and you can trust her to spot something "not quite right" and deal with it. Her care of our pets over the years have included our cat, who has eaten foreign objects and had four surgeries for intestinal obstructions, our Mexican jumping bean standard poodle named Abby, and the love of my life, now passed away, a Shepherd/Chow mix named Bear who was the greatest dog on earth despite the fact that he bit our mailman in the calf and wouldn't let our friends into the house until we barricaded him in the living room. However, he and Cheryl became best of friends, and she always made sure she was the one to take care of Bear while we were away. I wouldn't have trusted ANYONE else with him. He loved her, and that's the testimonial to what a great petsitter she is. As Bear got older, and quite frail, when we went on vacation I would always leave a health care proxy, giving Cheryl the permission to make health care decisions for him if a bad event occurred. That, to me, is the best testimonial one can give to the caregiver of your pet. I could gush on forever, but hope that my few paragraphs have communicated the incredible trust and appreciation I have for TLK Petcare. This is the place where you can truly go on vacation and leave your pets behind, knowing that they are as well cared for and loved as if you were home with them. Cheryl and her helpers have been a gift in my life, and the lives of my sweet pets.

Julie cares for my mom's dog, Alfred. He is old and doesn't care for many people. Julie is gentle, patient and loving to him. My mom is also 90 years old, and Julie is basically a part of the family now. She is trustworthy, kind and my Mama adores her, as much as Alfred does. I gave her a key to my mom's house and she is always there when she's supposed to be. She also showed up for an emergency trip to the vet for Alfred, when I was out of town and couldn't get to Mama and Alfred. She's the best.

We are so happy that we found Erica for dog walking services through Thumbtack. She was very quick to get back to us and even came over to meet us in person. She is very knowledgeable about animals as she used to be a vet assistance and she is extremely professional. She is very flexible to work with your needs and she is happy to adjust times and visits per your pet needs. Her prices are great too for the quality service you get! We feel very at ease knowing she is taking goof care of our puppy when we are at work.

I tell her she is a "Pet Parent Whisperer" 😀 Since she is a trained vet technician she is much more knowledgeable than most pet care services out there. You can't go wrong with Shannon!!!

CritterSitters Veterinary Technician-Staffed In-Home Pet Care recently took care of my pets while I was away from home. April was AMAZING!! I left her a detailed message of what needed to be done and she went above and beyond that!!! She did things for my pets that I don't even do on a regular basis. My dogs are very protective of their home and at first I was a little worried about how everything was going to turn out. In the end, everyone became friends. My dogs were more comfortable in their own beds then they would have been in a kennel. Thank you so much, April!!!

I engage Carolyn as a dog walker, five days a week, to give my two energetic dogs a 30 minute morning walk. I am a very picky person, and yet, given her personality and diligence, I felt very comfortable giving Carolyn a key to my house and putting her in charge of my pups. She takes care of my dogs as if they were her own. She is on time every day and shows up ready to take charge. My dogs are in love with her. What makes Carolyn better than everyone else I interviewed, besides her winning personality, is that fact that she is a mature adult, a former sales/marketing executive who knows how to provide superior customer service, is a very good communicator and, as a bonus, has experience working at a vet's office, so she has seen and heard of all kinds of pet problems and is knowledgeable about solutions. She is a pleasure to know. You really can’t do any better.

I was leaving for Italy in three days and my sister who originally agreed to watch my cat baled on me. Needless to say I was in a panic. I contacted Sue and she put me at ease right away. Came by that night to meet my cat and get a layout of my place. She provided references and I provided her with vet info etc. We agreed with her coming by twice a week and her sitting with the cat for about 30 minutes changing the litter etc I felt immediately comfortable and sensed my cat would be in good hands and she was. While in Italy Sue sent me periodic emails letting me know that all was well. I arrived home to a well adjusted cat .She even brought my mail in for me! I would definitely use Sue again!

Scott at Happy Camper Pet Care helps out with our two dogs on a weekly basis. Usually 4-5 times a week, he comes by to take them for a walk and give them much needed exercise while we are at work. He is great with them, and they are definitely not low energy dogs. Now when we arrive home from work they are less hyper and we can enjoy them without getting stressed. A tired dog is a happy dog:) Scott is trustworthy, honest, reliable and hardworking and a pleasure to deal with. He also feeds them when needed and stays with them when we go away. He'll even take them to the vet or groomer and bring in your mail:) I highly recommend Happy Camper Pet Care to anyone looking for help with their pet/s.

          About

Andrea is very outgoing and really enjoys communicating with her clients in order to produce the exact groom they desire. She would be delighted if you took a few moments to meet her and discuss any specific grooming questions or requests you may have. Andrea works Monday and Wednesday through Saturday -- no Tuesday or Sunday appointments. A Few Things Andrea Would Like You to Know: She works by herself and prefers to bathe all of the pets thoroughly before she begins the grooming process. Therefore, some days it may take a little longer for your pet's grooming to be complete. Please note: Andrea has a 50-lb weight limit. Generally, pets are groomed in order of arrival. As a courtesy, you may request a certain pickup time, and Andrea will try to accommodate everyone as much as possible. Upon admittance, please inform the receptionist if you would prefer to pick up by a certain time so that Andrea can try to schedule accordingly. Usual pick up times are between 5 & 6 pm. Drop-off times are generally between 12:30 & 1:00 PM. An owner is welcome to drop off later if previously arranged with Andrea. Andrea requests a phone consultation prior to cat grooms and asks that the owner be present during the groom.

          Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is included in a dog grooming?

Dog grooming is so much more than giving your dog a bath. Dog grooming is a broad term that covers all aspects of canine cleanliness and hygiene. The services included in dog grooming will vary based on your needs and what you choose to pay. Unless they are rolling in cowpies or playing in mud puddles, most dogs are okay getting a shampoo bath only as needed. You’ll know when they need it if they smell bad or are bringing dirt into the house. Some dogs, like shepherds and shih tzus, have thick coats that can get matted and tangled without regular care. Pro dog groomers can deftly blow dry a dog’s hair after a bath so that it is shiny and smooth. Dog grooming can include brushing that detangles dog hair and also thins the undercoat to minimize shedding.

Dog grooming also includes hygiene services such as toothbrushing and ear cleaning. Clean teeth are important to the health of your dog, and the pros have the patience and proper technique to get it done. Regular dog grooming can stave off tear stains, those reddish stains below your dog’s eyes. Anal gland expression is something not many people want to do on their own, even if they love their dog. A dog groomer can safely and efficiently release any blocked anal gland fluid. Other dog grooming services include nail trimming and clipping. Nationally, dog grooming prices range from $60 to $80. Most dog groomers offer discounts to customers who purchase monthly packages or bundle multiple grooming services at one time.

What does a dog walker do?

We all know our dogs love going on long, adventure-filled walks, but jobs and family and commuting can make it difficult to give them the leash time they deserve. You can hire a professional dog walker to make sure your furry friend gets adequate exercise and outdoor time each day. A professional dog walker may be an individual contractor or work for a dedicated dog-walking company. In either case, you want to make sure the pro has the appropriate insurance in case of an emergency. Some people opt to give the dog walker a key to their house; others to have them pick up the dog from the yard. Dog walking can happen as often as multiple times per day, or just a few times a month as needed. Here are some questions to ask when you are interviewing a new dog walker:

          • Will you or someone else be walking my dog?
          • Do you have a backup plan if you can’t make it for a scheduled walk?
          • Will you walk my dog by itself, or do you walk several dogs at once?
          • What are your different walk routes?
          • When will you pick up and drop off?
          • How will we communicate?
          • Do I have to commit to a schedule or are you flexible?
          • What’s your cancellation policy?
          • What’s your response plan if my dog gets injured or becomes sick?
          • How and how often do I pay you?
          • Do you offer package pricing if I buy multiple dog walks up front?

          What is a dog groomer?

A dog groomer is a service professional who provides dog grooming and basic hygiene care for your dog. Dog groomers are typically animal lovers who are competent and comfortable working with a wide range of dog breeds and temperaments. Dog groomers are knowledgeable about the care needs for different kinds of dog coats. A poodle will have different haircut needs than a shih tzu, for example, so it pays to have a trained pro provide the proper cut. Good dog groomers know how to safely clean your dog’s teeth, bathe your dog, and cut their nails without going too short. They understand how to trim the hair from around your dog’s face, express anal glands, and clean your dog’s ears. Many people who choose dog grooming as a profession also pursue other dog services such as attending veterinary school, running a doggy day care center, working as a professional dog walker, and more.

          What is a dog groomer?

Keep your family dogs happy, healthy and clean with regular dog grooming. A dog groomer is a business owner or employee of a dog grooming business who specializes in dog hygiene and grooming. To find a reputable dog groomer, research reviews, ask for references and confirm that the groomer has good standing in the dog grooming community.

A dog groomer should be comfortable and competent working with dogs of all breeds and temperaments. Typically a groomer will have trained with other groomers and taken educational courses to keep abreast of the latest safety information and techniques. There are brick-and-mortar dog grooming businesses, as well as mobile dog groomers who bring all their equipment and provide their services at your home or location. In some cases, brick-and-mortar businesses will also pick up and return your dog for an additional fee.

What vaccines do dogs need to be groomed?

It’s important to make sure your dog is up to date on its vaccines before taking it to a groomer. Vaccinations keep your dog and the other dogs that use the establishment healthy. Viruses can linger long after a dog is gone, so an unvaccinated dog can infect a number of other dogs days or even months after their visit. Find out about your dog groomer’s vaccination policies, and think carefully about receiving services from a company that does not require vaccinations. Here are the main vaccinations that are generally required for dog grooming:

          • Parvovirus: Parvo is a nasty virus that can kill dogs within 48-72 hours of infection. The virus is incredibly persistent and, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association, is resistant to heat, cold, humidity and drying. It’s spread by dog-to-dog contact or contact with contaminated feces, environments (food and water bowls, collars and leashes, etc.,) or people.
          • Adenovirus 2: Dogs receive this vaccination to protect against canine infectious hepatitis. The vaccination can also helps prevent canine cough.
          • Canine distemper virus: Distemper has no known cure and can cause serious pain, illness, and even death, although recovery is possible with medical intervention.
          • Rabies: This disease attacks the central nervous system and — when untreated — will
          • lead to death. The CDC recommends euthanizing an unvaccinated animal that has been exposed to rabies, although six-month isolation followed by vaccination is also permissible.
          • Para-influenza: Canine para-influenza leads to kennel cough and an unhappy dog.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
