I hired JA Drywalling initially to install a new kitchen faucet. That faucet turned into cutting and installing a new countertop, installing a electric box and wall mount for a flat screen in my kitchen. Let me start by saying the work was quality work and the value was unbelievable. What I appreciated most was he took pride in his work, even when he didn't think anyone was watching, he was still measuring precisely, going over work and taking his time. For instance I ran into some issues with my faucet. I had a continuous leak that had been going for some time, instead of him just slapping the faucet on he informed me that the hardware under the sink was pretty much done for and that I would have to replace it to avoid anymore further leaks. He was absolutely right! I had so much erosion a metal clamp broke right off in my hand. He replaced everything under the sink, when he could've just threw the faucet on and not cared if it leaked in the near future. I will definitely recommend him to anyone. And I'm already planning for him to do additional work for me. He was well prepared with tools and material and he also cleans up after himself. What else could you ask for, Hire him!

Bruno sent his Thumbtack estimates in a timely manner and then stopped by as per our appointment to discuss the work. He and his crew showed up according to our schedule and performed a super job. He fixed several cracks on a large retaining wall in front of my property and the did repairs to 2 sets of steps, a section of sidewalk, and several areas of my foundation that needed skimcoating. It looks great! He will be returning to do some further work on one of the sets of steps. He's honest and easy to work with. Highly recommended.

Whole house 2,500 SF remodel, new everything including re piping, heating system, adding two bathrooms, larger kitchen, new wiring, moving walls, finishing walls, roof, siding and all the finish that goes along with type of project. We did our math, we did a lot of homework and found dollar for dollar Richard at Universal Home Renovations was the most affordable choice. Timely Basis- In the Highest of Quality. We wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for doing such a great job on our summer home which you completed in July of 2013. We thought of no better way to spread the new's with this up standing Mass based company than through this great service called Thumbtack. We absolutely love our remodel and look forward to the many years ahead of using it with our family. Being able to remodel a home and have confidence in the builder, his staff and his communication skills was extremely important to us especially when building this home from 1500 miles away. All the people at Universal Home Renovations showed professionalism and willingness to work with us on our schedule and through the changing of plans during the course of the project was refreshing and appreciated. The pride that Richard, his close subs and employees took in remodeling our home, definitely reflects their work ethic and the determination that they have to put forth a quality, "second- to- none" project. At times we were concerned that the costs were getting a little high based on what we had planned in our budget, they did take the time to explain at length and in accounting detail everything that went into the cost in question. This was extremely important to us and again very much appreciated because we live so far away. The documentation that the staff of Universal Home Renovations provided to us via e-mail pictures and accounting ledger entries, again demonstrated the desire for this project to be a success for all of us. We look forward to a long relationship with Richard and all the staff at  Universal Home Renovations in the coming years. We know that when we need Richard or Joe to work on something, they both will be open to sitting down with us and discussing our plans and completing the project on a timely basis in the highest of quality. Best Regards,

Josh I lost your buisness card and have a things I need to get done. I was so happy to find u again!!! projects that I need done. I have to say this young man is one of the best. I have had many contractors, carpet companies, roofers. Etc. I have owned my own home for 30 Years and i am constantly upgrade it and changing the look. I met josh before his Milatary career. He did work for me then. It was always to perfection and the absolute best price. He is very respectful of your time and needs and always a gentleman with manners u wish for. In any case in the past few years josh has done a it of remodels. He opened up a wall between my kitchen and living room that Ali e made me jump with joy. What he did after was truly amazing. Granite breakfast nook, with an island in the kitchen. Took my breath away. He painted every room in my home and put in hardwood bamboo flooring. That was the biggest project he had done for me. I wouldn't even think of using anyone else, but I also frugal and wanted to make sure his prices were with standards. He saved me on that big job 18 thousand dollars. The quality of what he did above and beyond. I just had my house appraised and the value went UP 30K!! So now I would like my master bedroom and bathroom gutted and have josh work his magic. I will be in touch soon josh. I would like to go over the plans do u can price out the job and draw it up. Look forward to seeing u soon. I am sure your little ones are getting big. One last really none of my business comment I saw someone gave u one star? I have referred you to at least 10 of my friends. Refinishing their floors etc. and they were very impressed with ur professionalism and work ethic. So maybe this woman is just having a hard time in life and unfortunately they have a hard time dealing with stress and expect people to be at their call when demanded. The hard part of being self employed. You have made so many happy. Please do not let this person disturb u in any way. Maybe she has personal stuff going on who knows. Just keep going. I want my project done now so call tomorrow!! Sorry that was a joke. Maybe in poor taste. I will pray for the woman that she find happiness in something. Thank u josh. Talk soon

Working with Drew on our kitchen remodel was great! He was so accommodating and timely to quote the job, offer suggestions, and complete the work. Within a week and a half he completed the demo of our old kitchen, installed new tile flooring, and installed our new kitchen cabinets! He was organized throughout the entire process and great at communicating progress and next steps.

Tim and crew were hired to convert a breezeway space into a four season room. This involved demolishing and rebuilding two outside walls, removing shingle from the other two walls, and finishing the interior to the point of being ready for painting. He installed a slider, exterior doors, and windows. From the estimate phase through completion, Tim was upfront and professional. He and his crew did quality work, from excellent finish carpentry to making sure the site was cleaned up after each day's work. If problems were found along the way, Tim brought them to my attention promptly and worked collaboratively to find solutions. The only downside of this experience was having the start date of the job delayed. Despite that, however, Tim completed the job within my required timeline. I think all builders have challenges with time/job management, so that said, Tim performed relatively well. I would hire him again, and give high recommendations. Thanks, guys, for your awesome work!

We recently put in an inground pool. Due to the slope in the yard, we needed to incorporate a some retaining walls on one full side of the pool. Jason and team provided an outstanding looking wall that blended very nicely into our existing patio, and provided an awesome flow between the pool and the house and deck. He also provided his expertise in landscaping and provided a second wall that incorporated very nicely into the other side of the yard, and prevented us from needing to relocate a shed, saving us some money. Thanks to Jason, Rob, Ivan and Mark for being prompt, professional, neat and providing an important piece in our backyard oasis.

The team did a great job. I have a slope behind my house with some ivy and trees. There is a little path right behind my fence that had eroded away slightly. They came and put in a small retaining wall, widened the path and made a small strip along the path that I now use to plant onions, garlic and some flowers. It looks really fantastic. I have had a few neighbors ask me about the work because they are having similar erosion problems. I am always happy to point them towards the New England Home Company.

Rich has done a lot of work for me. So much that I can't remember everything he has done. He remodeled the kitchen which turned out amazing! He has built retaining walls and outdoor stairs. He is dependable, on time and a great guy. I have photos of the kitchen remodel that I am willing to share.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

    What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

    • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
    • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
    • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
    • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
