We had been in and out of mediation for years. We would get anxious about finances, mostly. Our first mediator retired and one fired us. Jay somehow eased our concerns and elicited our trust at the first meeting. Some of this is an acquired skill but the rest and probably the most important part of it is character. Jay maintains a calm presence in the sessions even (and this is important) when it was tense between us. And of course he knows his stuff which further contributed to a sense of safety as you navigate uncharted waters. We were stuck, and Jay got us moving again until we finished our process with good will to share. I recommend him highly.
I manage the Interagency Sharing Neutrals Program (SNs). SNs is an interagency mediation program that provides free mediation services to federal agencies throughout the metropolitan Baltimore-Washington, D.C. area. SNs primarily provides mediation services in equal employment opportunity (EEO) cases and workplace disputes. Ms. Bowman has been an outstanding member of SNs since 1998. During that time Ms. Bowman has mediated hundreds of cases for the program, with a majority of those cases ending in a resolution. Ms. Bowman's background and experience in civil rights, EEO, and as a manager make her uniquely qualified for a conflict resolution professional. In addition to her background, Ms. Bowman is an outstanding communicator. She is able to listen objectively while honing in on each parties' underlying interest. Very few mediators are requested again and again. Ms. Bowman is one of those mediators. I highly recommend Ms. Bowman to anyone seeking a competent mediation professional.
Sterling delves deeply into root issues that other counselors fell short on. His approach comes w/o judgement, just identifying sources of attitudes/behaviors and how to deal with them.
Fantastic experience to date. Candid, sound advice and prompt action. After agonizing with two previous unresponsive lawyers I finally found a great one that is my advocate. Completely satisfied
I find the services offered at 1st Step Mediation to be highly effective. My mediator is very easy to talk to and very professional. At our initial meeting, she was able to ask me probing questions to help me to identify some underlying causes that I feel may help me to resolve my issues. She even offered some suggestions/input that I had not thought of before. Seeing my thoughts on paper helped me to put things into perspective and I am able to refer to the notes from our meeting to track my progress. My mediator follows up with me from time to time which shows me that 1st Step Mediation really cares. I look forward to working with my mediator again and I highly recommend 1st Step Mediation.
He made himself easily available and provided great insight and strategies for resolution. Still a lot of work to be done but these things take time and diligence.
Ive meet with the dialogue group team, as was mentioned 30 minutes of initial consultation were complimentary. The matter was handled in a professional and concise way. There were no hidden fees and the flat rate was very reasonable compared to other entities. I recommend using Dialogue Group LLC for people who are looking to solve their problems in a fast, cost efficient and hassle free environment.
An experienced divorce mediator for more than 20 years, Sheila Russian has helped people reach informed decisions about custody, property and debts away from court. This is cost effective and confidential. She is a member of Academy of Professional Family Mediators.
I get results in mediation. As a mediator, I settle about 80% of my cases. As a representative of parties in mediation, I settle over 90% of my cases. I settle cases because my background and education allow me to make objective assessment of cases and situations and to find mutually agreeable common ground. I like helping people solve disputes. Even better if the costs is relatively low, the process is quick and the parties help shape the result. I practice law but legal processes are expensive, slow, and judges, who often are not fair, impose the result.

Many people who have just met me ask, "Were you raised by your grandparents?" Sadly, I didn't have the opportunity to know my grandparents, but I think their comments reflect the idea that my parents raised me with many ideas that are now seen as "old fashioned," ideas such as, "If you're going to do anything, do it with all of your heart," or "Respect yourself enough to do your best; a piece of you is reflected in everything you touch." I honestly believe the lessons I was taught, which is why I've been successful in some of life's major goals, like paying off my home before the full mortgage was due, or losing a good deal of weight. I'll be very honest and say that many times, I've met people who remember having met me, and I've had to admit not remembering them. I've felt badly about that, but it also makes me feel proud to be memorable. I enjoy learning new things and meeting new people. Being helpful and having the opportunity to ease a person's burden is a wonderful feeling.

Mary Vahl's background is in social services and her degree is in Sociology. She has specialized in divorce and family mediation since 2000. Carl and Mary work together as a team of mediators. Our clients get the benefit of an interdisciplinary, male-female team. Together, Carl and Mary have successfully assisted hundreds of couples plan and prepare for their break-up, respectfully and without a costly court battle. Mediation Preserves Important Relationships One of the major problems with using lawyers and the courts to resolve legal disputes is that they usually destroy the relationship between the parties. In law school students are taught the "adversarial system of justice". The adversarial system pits one party against the other in a winner takes all battle. In divorce and family disputes the adversarial system pits one spouse against the other in a contest over who wins or loses the children and property. Mediation is not a contest; rather mediation is a cooperative decision making process which allows parents to continue to make all the decisions that affect their children. During mediation parents work to establish a parenting plan which meets the needs of the children and both parents. During mediation neither parent loses custody of their children nor is either parent relegated to the role of visiting parent. In business mediation a business and a colleague, vendor or customer who have worked well together profitably in the past can solve a particular dispute cooperatively and thereafter continue to work and do business together.
Maryland Family Mediation believes that most people have the potential to find solutions to their own disputes. We help you and the other parties in the conflict or lawsuit settle difficult conversations over problematic issues. We intercede over family issues which may involve your spouse, partner, parents or adult or minor children. Whether your concerns are separation and divorce, parenting plans, mixed families or seniors and care giving, we can guide the discussion, so you can make decisions over the complicated challenging issues that you and your family are facing. Past clients have complimented our "calm approach" in mediation as it enabled them to have open and honest dialogues, venting their differences and finding workable solutions. Mediation looks forward rather than backwards. It does not dwell on blame for past mistakes but instead looks onward and helps families come up with options for the future. Thus, parents who are in the throes of a divorce need mediation to help them figure out their role as a parent when they're no longer married. Mediation can help divorcing parents make arrangements over who makes the decision-making for the children, who takes them to the dentist or doctor, or who picks them up after sports training. This is a crucial process for moving forward and staying out of conflict. We have more than 30 years of diverse legal experience in both private and public sectors. We have training in collaborative law as well as more than 300 hours of specialized and advanced mediation and alternative dispute resolution training.
