About
I am one of the few that teaches from a modern and scientific perspective, based in my Biology and Linguistics background, rather than a Westernized Classical or Operatic. canon. This does NOT mean I don't teach opera, musical theater and legit students. I am currently teaching several now. This DOES mean that I have NO biases that I will impose on you. Any vocal technique can be done safely, so I want YOU to have the vocal dexterity to sing the way YOU want, and maybe along the way learn about different ways you might want to sing as well. There are so many demands in modern music that so few teachers I have encountered can answer: What makes Adele, Anastasia's, Aretha's and made Amy Winehouse's voice soulful? (Partly, an occlusion of the vocal tract by the aryepiglottic sphincter in tandem with partial occlusions by the sulcus, or root, of the tongue adding a meaty thickness to the sound traveling up from your vocal chords.) How do I CHEST belt F5 and up, like Ariana Grande in Problem, Jessie J in Bang Bang, or like is suggested for singers attempting Defying Gravity? (Well, easier described than done, but belting past an E5 is usually accomplished by using less of the body of the vocal chord to vibrate than in standard chest voice, but maintaining a tight glottal space characteristic of chest voice. The less of your vocal chords that vibrates, the easier it is for this smaller mass to be pushed to a higher frequency. Closing off the glottal space invokes the intensity and darker color associated with standard chest register). What makes Ed Sheeran, Lana Del Ray and the Lumineers sound so unique? (Well, the quickest answer to this question is that they all use their tongues to imbue a slight rhotic, or "r", color to their vowels that makes them sound mumbly and they often make other choices such as ventricular fold extension that classically "pretty" singers almost always avoid). Go ahead. Google for other sources for answers to those questions. If it's anything like when I did it for my thesis in high school and college, it'll come up dry. Come take advantage of the handy vocal information available from my one-of-a-kind academic background! Whether it's a shy student learning to belt it out, or a trans voice student "gender-swapping" their voice, I love it when my students realize the infinite possibilities available to most voices! Your mind is your strongest vocal muscle, so don't let any voice teacher sell your vocal potential short!

I've been a student of Charles' since the end of 2015 and can with certainty say that he gets results. Most of his exercises and homework (and boy does he give you the good work to do) is slightly off the beaten path but the results are undeniable (if you do the work). I've been singing most of my life and taking lessons and my biggest issue has been tense 'squeeky' vocals and fear of the high notes. My voice is thin but I'm a contralto and this has often been miss understood by other vocal coaches. Charles has not only helped me overcome my timidity associated with my voice but has me reaching, singing 'big' vocals like Jill Scott and Lala Hathaway. On a personality level he is fun to work with and will mold his coaching technique to your personal needs. He's highly responsive to the needs of his students and spends time out of the lessons going through the homework and giving advice all days of the week. If you are looking to truly improve your vocals, are wiling to put in the work and have a coach that cares a bout your voice then Charles is for you.

Charles is the best. Ive been taking singing lessons for 17 weeks or so and i hear a tremendous difference in the way my voice sounds. On the first day he will give you a broad overview covering his techniques. Then you can pick and choose what you would like to learn. Charles will give you simple drills that might feel a bit funny when you first try them, but if you just do what he says and practice for an hour or two per week you will magically get a little better each week because Charles knows his stuff. His knowledge comes from experience and academic papers he has read vigorously. Just do what the guy says and dont forget to practice, and i promise you will improve. People who have said I would never be a good singer have retracted their statements and admitted they were wrong after only 12 weeks!

Charles is an incredibly knowledgable teacher. Every question I had was anwered befoee it could leave my lips and then some. Regretfully I had to cut my lessons short due to work, but for anyone with the desire to learn he will exceed your expectation. 10/10, will keeping learning from him as time becomes more available.
