Rob is excellent. I set up a project for Handyman as we moved into a new house to install over 25 curtain rods and he actually came that night, after fitting me in that day. He was there late and came back the next day to finish (which he surely did not need to come that night, but, I was very happy he did). He will definitely be our Handyman. I will be hiring him to install outside lights, TV brackets, etc.

Even though we had a minor disaster, Tim stuck through to make sure things were taken care of. I would use Tim again for small handyman duties.

Hired Marvin to fix some plaster in my ceiling. I have 100+ year old house in Baltimore city and the ceiling plaster had some water damage from a roof leak. I had the roof repaired by a roofer last year, but needed to have the plaster fixed where it had gotten wet. Marvin gave me a quick reply and estimate, came out and go the job done super quick and done right! Even more impressively, you would never know that someone had done any plaster work in the room as he cleaned up the dust/debris COMPLETELY and took all the trash with him. The repair looks great and I'm super satisfied. Definitely hire Marvin for any job, I highly recommend.

I highly recommend Stavo/ All Seasons Pro... you won't be disappointed. From my initial inquiry about needing a handyman, Stavo responded immediately and even sent pictures of previous jobs he did. He followed up and stayed in contact with me until I was ready for him to complete the job. He was punctual and came ready to work. Best of all, he was honest and up front about tasks that I thought needed to be done and saved me money by making more reasonable suggestions. I will definitely use Stavo and his team again. Thanks Stavo🤗

The electrician was very polite and extremely professional. I needed a chandelier assembled and installed rather quickly. He showed up within 1 1/2 hours. The project took several hours because the chandelier came in a million pieces. He was extremely patient and once finished, it looked exactly as it was pictured on the website. I so pleased with his work and have received many compliments on the chandelier. After finishing the project, he cleaned up after himself and even offered to dispose of the enormous box that it came in. I highly recommend E.G.H. Services!

My father recently had a stroke and we decided to have him move in with us rather than put him in a facility. We needed grab bars installed throughout the house. I placed a request on thumbtack and after receiving a few quotes, decided to go with Scott from Quick Fixes Handyman Services. He showed up on time and had the grab bars installed in just over an hour. We had agreed on 2 hours for the bid. With the extra time Scott was able to fix the kitchen faucet and a leaky valve in the shower. I was very impressed with work he did and the willingness to make sure I was satisfied. I would highly recommend Scott and will use him again in the future.

Stephen was a no show. No call, no text, no nothing. Pretty disappointed. It has been so difficult finding a reliable handyman for a variety of things around the house, I guess I shouldn't be too surprised. It seems no one wants money these days. I'll keep looking.

I cannot say enough good things about United Construction. I had to remodel my kitchen and, after having to suffer a bathroom remodelation with another compamy, I was very skeptical about going through this process again. But I was lucky enough to find Carlos and Ulrich. They were simply the best. Not only it was the best rate that I could find but also their work was impeccable. They did all of what they'd promissed in the given time frame. I wish I had found them before! I am sure I will call them for future works and I highly recommend their services to anyone having to remodel.

Where do I start? Matthew was amazing! If you have needs for a handyman, you have found one. From responsiveness to punctuality to expertise of his craft; he does it all. This guy is amazing. He asks questions and genuinely wants to please the customer. "The customer is always right" is his motto. Trust me he treats your ideas as if it's the Holy Grail of his project and even stays later to make sure you are pleased with his work. He cleaned up after the work was done making sure to leave my place as neat as possible. Pricing was more than reasonable for the amount of work that he did. So a big thank you to Matthew for making my apartment look fabulous and just being overall a great guy during the whole process. CHOOSE HIM!!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.
