Introduction: I work as a senior electronics mechanical packaging and PCB designer and have been consulting with aerospace/avionics companies, DoD/Defense contractors, various medical electronics firms, engineering design and development companies and lots more. I typically work with a team of engineers who have created a set of proven electronic schematics, which are then turned over to me in order to input all of the PCB footprint data for the PCB layout. I then go through the process to completely design the PCB, create the fabrication files, send those files to outside vendors to be fabricated and then also create all of the documentation drawings. In addition, I am also tasked to design whatever chassis, enclosure and housing is required for the project using either AutoCAD and/or SolidWorks (usually SolidWorks these days), as well as specifying and sourcing all of the electro-mechanical components and parts (i.e. connectors, cable assemblies, LEDs, switches, PCB-standoffs and all other hardware items) that the chassis, enclosure and housing will eventually need. I then also may specify and/or source the sheet-metal vendor. When all is said and done, I provide you with a "physical reality" which you can literally hold in your hands, all from an electronic schematic!
