Alvin Smithson is a very gifted classically trained musician. Accomplished in all aspects of piano performance and instruction. He is a leader in the theater community and composer of solo piano and orchestral music in contemporary and classical styles. A very genuine and sincere person, willing to dialogue on music topics with everyone at any level. Alvin is also an expert on tuning and maintenance of pianos. You cannot find anyone more knowledgeable, careful, and trustworthy to tune your piano. His rates are very reasonable. 5 Stars!

Stevie helped make our special moment 10 times better! I hired Stevie to play a couple songs for me in georgetown above the canal as my girlfriend and I walked by... just before I proposed to her. He not only did an excellent job, but he learned "all of me - John Legend just because that was our song. I would recommend Stevie to anyone looking for a professional and very talented musician! Thanks Stevie!!! - Amol & Cari

What an incredibly talented musician! Stevie Matthews played for a select group and he was fantastic! He was professional, arrived early, organized, able to accomdate some last minute set-up changes, and again, an incredibly talented musician. He helped make a very special event even more so for all who attended. Looking forward to hiring him again!

Tona Brown is an excellent musician and violin instructor. She's pleasant and encouraging, my daughter, who is an advanced student, enjoys Tona and looks forward to the lessons. Tona recognizes my daughter's abilities and tailors the lessons to enhance and further develop them. She is challenging my daughter with advanced concepts and techniques that have helped my daughter grow as a violinist in the short time she's been with her (3 lessons). I'm so glad we found Tona!

Trying to learn an instrument past grade school age is a very daunting task, however, Tona and Aida Studios made me feel so comfortable and made picking up an instrument in my 30s a truly enjoyable experience. I recommend her for all ages, she's a patient and gifted musician and teacher and I am so happy to be one of her students!

Ms Brown is extremely competent as a musician and teacher. Her professionalism is unquestionable. Our daughter has made marked improvement in her violin playing. We highly recommend Aida Studios.

I have hired musicians for over 25 years for different events. Mark was one of the most talented, professional, gracious and kindest person I have met. He played for a group of 60. The reviews from our guests were unlike anyone we have had in the past. We will certainly have him back in the near future. I highly recommend him to anyone looking for a harpist.

There isn't a better musician to work with than Mark. Quite possibly the best that I've ever seen on every level imaginable. We only had him for the ceremony and the cocktail hour but his music was one of the biggest highlights and most talked about things of the night.

Mark is awesome! He’s detail oriented and played the most beautiful music for our ceremony. He went over the music selections with me, came to the rehearsal, and is a truly talented harpist! Highly recommend!

My lesson with Don, who's very amicable and respectful of the student's desires, was a good experience. His approach with drumming students is based more in music theory and from the perspective of the other band members (vocalist, guitarist, etc.), so he advocates for a strong base in fundamental beats, staying in rhythm, and understanding how to sync up with other members of a band. Not previously having this perspective, his insight was valuable and I've taken some of the things he's mentioned to heart. For me, the material was pretty easy to pick up since I have some experience both with the drums and piano, but other students may initially fumble with his quick pace - don't let that discourage you though, I believe that even a true beginner could get used to the pace within a few lessons. If your desire is to start gigging, he's very adamant about getting you on a fast track towards doing just that. If you're willing to put in the effort I believe that he speaks earnestly and you'll soon be gigging. Overall I recommend him if you're looking for a good, well-rounded intro.

Alex W.

Verified review

Don knows his stuff, he's easy to get along with and overall a really nice guy. He has an impressive repertoire of musical skills and a lifetime of experience in music to draw from. As far as instruments he can play a little bit of everything, he can basically teach you any instrument you'd find in a regular rock band, folk, country, pop, blues etc. He's probably most proficient on the guitar and piano but he also knows quite a lot about vocals. If you struggle with theory he does a great job demystifying some of the fundamentals of music theory that are useful to beginners. Whether you're an absolute beginner or long time musician Don will be able to help you out. Highly recommend.

Don is a very accomplished guitarist with a wealth of knowledge. It shows that he is eager to impart his knowledge. I had my first lesson with him today and I learned so much. He incorporates music theory in to his lessons to show us why things are played the way they are and where they originated from. He was patient and very encouraging. His soloing skills are phenomenal and I am excited to learn from him. I highly recommend him to musicians of all levels. He is now my jazz guitar guru! Hail to the Guitar Chief Don!

The best thing that I did for my guitar playing ability was hiring Tim. Your first mistake (should you make it) would be to not hire him. If you're looking to improve your overall skill, do yourself the favor of working with Tim. I have been working with Tim for about 2 years now and have seen drastic improvement in my ability to play. I began as a curious beginner and am now playing at a really comfortable level. To begin, Tim is really easy going and down to earth. He easily relates to anyone, which makes it easy for him to understand your desire for different styles and reasons for playing the guitar. I previously worked with someone who only wanted to teach his style of guitar, so needless to say when I met Tim I was really happy to work with someone who was interested in what I wanted to learn and why. His guitar knowledge is so profound--he's been playing for so long that he can play and teach any style of guitar. When I'd ask about jazz guitar, or rock style vs. blues he not only was able to explain the difference between them all but also could play the styles. Tim's expertise and appreciation for music allows him to be able to teach songs from an array of genres. Not only does he know how to teach them, but he also tabs everything out along with a recording of whatever song you're working on. This was very beneficial to me as I wanted to practice my solo techniques over music that he/we created. I've never created a song before working with Tim and I have to say it was really cool. Very impressive! He supplies all the needed items at his house (amp, guitars--both electric and acoustic), effects, mic--the whole 9 yards. Here are a list of the topics we have covered over the last few years. I know there are more than I'm going to list, but this is what came to mind: -Chords, chord theory, different grips/voicings, etc. -Scales, soloing, riffs -Finger picking technique -Lots of song examples working through chord progressions, melodies, solos -Tabbed out what we worked on & sent recordings to work on rhythm, etc. Again, do the right thing for both you, your wallet, and your guitar and HIRE TIM!!

Neil M.

Verified review

I've been working with Tim for almost 2 years now. Tim has a great, private, home studio in his basement with about a dozen different acoustic and electric guitars, a variety of bass and amps, and tons of other equipment like microphones, recording software, effect peddles, etc... You don't need to bring your own equipment if you don't want to. If you do, Tim also has a work bench and can help with repairs, maintenance, and fine tuning. His studio is in Canton and convenient for lessons. Plus, Tim is very flexible and able to accommodate me when my schedule changes suddenly. When I first started with Tim, I had been playing on my own for about a year. Tim is an amazing musician but didn't make me feel bad about my level (or lack there of) of skill. Tim first taught me the basics of foundational guitar theory (notes, scales, chords grips, chord theory, keys, etc) and focused on technique, picking, fingerstyle, and strumming patterns. However, he kept it light and fun and we worked in learning the songs I wanted to learn at the same time, making the experience enjoyable instead of a chore. Tim is always willing to help transcribe and tab out a song for me, or a solo I want to reproduce, or other melodies/chord progressions from other songs. He is even willing to send out videos or recordings to use for practice purposes. We are now delving more into music theory and more advance compositions and songs.

Jonathan H.

Tim is a very talented musician and astute teacher. He's been able to develop my skills and knowledge while keeping it light and engaging. There is always a sense of mutual respect and collaboration during our sessions. Moreover, I've never felt like my lessons were cookie cutter. Tim's enthusiasm and genuine love for music is to be admired.

I couldn't have been happier to have David play at my wedding! Nothing but good things to say about my experience with him. He was so easy to communicate with leading up to my event and was more than happy to accommodate anything I needed. I can't say how many people have given compliments on how much they loved listening to him perform. He is extremely talented and has an amazing voice. Not to mention very kind and professional. I would hands down recommend him to anyone who is looking to hire a musician. We didn't get a chance to see him because he played our ceremony and cocktail hour, but we plan to go see him perform as soon as we can!!

I unfortunately was hiring David for my mother's funeral. Not the easiest thing to communicate about and plan. He was professional yet personable and respectful of the situation. Planning with him made an unpleasant task actually pleasant. For the venue, his music was lovely and he "delivered" just as he promised, including taking the (short!) time to learn difficult songs I had requested. If you want to hire an entertainer that is not only wonderful to listen to but also completely reliable and easy to plan with - pick David!!

I got my first guitar last Christmas (at 52!) and thought I'd take a couple of lessons to get started. I saw Bill's ad, liked what he had written (though I have to say I was a little skeptical) but thought, probably no harm in taking a couple lessons and then doing the rest on my own with free YouTube videos. Well, here I am, almost one year and 52 lessons later, playing guitar like I never dreamed possible! And no YouTube in sight. Nothing but Bill Twilde's exceptional guitar teaching and mentoring. You know, you come across true teachers like this once, maybe twice in your life. I wasn't even sure I could form a single chord with my fingers. But because of Bill's gentle, intuitive guidance, I learned I can do more than I ever thought possible! Ok, I guess I'm gushing now but it's kind of hard to stop. He's really that good. Go see him play out somewhere in the meantime, and imagine taking lessons from someone who is also that great a performer. Been an awesome experience for me and can hardly wait to start year two!

Jack Philipoom came to my attention at my nieces wedding reception in Williamsburg , Virginia where he was performing jazz guitar with an ensemble. It was there that I booked him for a garden party at my McLean , Virginia home. The flow and style of this extremely talented musician added an elegant ambiance to our evening. His personality is delightful, and our guests found him to be simply charming. I will definitely rehire him, and have highly recommended him to our friends.

Mr. Grattan provided videography, a band, and a duo, for my daughter's wedding. It was such a relief having all of that in the hands of one person instead of three different vendors. The band was called the Rockits, and they were fantastic. They played great music and when they went on break, they played new music like a DJ would. It was really perfect. The duo was PG&Robin. They were really good for the beginning when people were heading in and having a champagne before the ceremony. The video Mr. Grattan did was really professional and my daughter got it within a week, which is unheard of. She got a long and short one. I highly recommend Mr. Grattan and PG Productions for video and entertainment.

Peter is an exceptionally experienced musician with experience that not only validates his abilites but places him among the elite. Peter has worked with bands including the Who, Twisted Sister, Mick Fleetwood (Fleetwood Mac) and my personal favorite, Elton John. As a "newbie" to the field of music, I can assure you that John exhibits exceptional patience as well as the ability to make the complex seem simple. Whether new to music or an experienced professional, I highly recommend you speak to Peter before making a final decision. FIve stars!

I highly recommend Diane as a vocal coach. So far I have seen her twice and my confidence has already started to increase. I have had a lot of shyness around singing when I think anyone is in earshot of me which is one thing I wanted to get over. I still have work to do on this, but both times I have seen Diane I have been pleasantly surprised at how comfortable I feel with her. That alone is huge, because it allows me to relax and actually learn. I feel like I have had little breakthroughs in just our two lessons and I am excited to continue working with her. Not only is she very experienced and well educated, but she also practices what she preaches and is an excellent vocalist herself.

Shamyra W.

Verified review

I took voice lessons from Diane and specifically wanted to specialize in jazz. I learned techniques from her that no one had ever taught me that have helped me be a better vocalist with more projection and power. Diane is amazing at what age does and she knows what she's doing! I'm grateful for my time with her when she and I were in Los Angeles!

I've been taking vocal lessons with Diane for 5 years now and I would never go to anyone else. I've been to many coaches but Diane is by far the best - not only is she an excellent instructor but a true musician as well. Her musical knowledge comes from both life and classroom experiences making her teaching technique genuine and personable.

Carey’s talent as a teacher does wonders for bridging the gap between music theory and music performance. I went into lessons with only a very basic knowledge of music theory that I hardly was able to apply to guitar, but his lessons taught me how to play in a way where I can either explore the musical depth of the tune or simply jam, comfortable that what I’m playing will always sound good. It’s broadened my abilities as a musician without taking away the simple fun of playing guitar, something that is invaluable in any teacher.

Tom C.

Verified review

Carey is extraordinarily well-informed in all musical styles and is very patient and good-humored as he communicates to his students a thorough grounding in musical theory. In doing so, he is very passionate about fulfilling his professional obligations to his students. In addition, he is himself an excellent jazz musician. I recommend him to any budding musician without reservation.

John Kunu is flexible in his approach to teaching, he brings many styles & skills to the keyboard, and he is willing to teach to what the goals of the student are rather than a regimented steps approach. John has been my daughter's piano teacher for several years. We are a musical family so it was important to us to choose a teacher with the depth in classical but also the breadth of knowledge in contemporary pop music, in order to keep our teen engaged in what she was learning. John's flexibility to teach to her interest areas while still making sure she mastered foundational skills and repertoire are rare in a piano teacher. We love that he weaves both classical instruction and improvisation so that a student is comfortable playing a piece of Bach as well as the latest songs on the radio. This has kept the learning fresh and relevant. But the greatest thing of all is when we hear our daughter wander over to the piano and just play -- she sounds beautiful and it is utter joy hearing your child make music and know that she will have this for a lifetime.

Janet Greene was my son’s private lessons teacher for almost ten years. She worked with him as a 4th grader until after graduation. His love for his viola and music is in large part due to her passion for music and her gentle guidance to the nuances of music and playing. She also encouraged him to practice every day and we have fond memories of him walking around the house every evening playing his instrument. She often found other venues for him play which gave him confidence in his ability to play in front of others. I believe that one reason he is still playing his instrument in college is the love for music she helped him develop. I highly recommend her as an instructor, tutor and person!

I've been going to 7DrumCity for almost a year and really enjoy going there. Not only is it a good place to start to learn how to play drums, but it's a cool spot for experienced drummers as well. It's filled with drummers and other musicians. What better place to meet and connect with other musicians? It's nice being able to bounce back ideas and questions with other drummers. Maybe you have a question regarding in ear monitors or particular drum heads or mics, whatever it is, it's nice being able to ask other drummers who regularly gig, tour, and record. I took lessons long ago when I was a kid and I've missed being able to just sit down and talk drums with someone. In terms of actual lessons, my view is that you're never too old or experienced to learn new beats and styles. It can be very easy to get set in your ways style and technique wise. I think it's healthy to try new things and get another drummer's perspective. All of the instructors are well qualified to teach, no matter your skill level.

But you'll also find that what makes this place so unique is its sense of community and support. Mike did a fantastic job as the musician at our wedding ceremony. He was able to play acoustic versions of the songs we wanted better even though they weren't on his list of recommended songs. We had multiple guests come up to us afterwards to say he did a great job. Mike was quick to respond to any emailed questions and he plays gigs in the area so we were able to check him out before signing the contract with confidence. With all of the other moving parts involved in planning an outdoor wedding at a family farm, it was great knowing that our music was covered by a professional who showed up on time, performed well, and was a very good sport about the hot and buggy weather. Thanks again Mike!

Mike’s performances are truly one of a kind. He recently played at an outdoor event I hosted with 100 people in attendance and it could have not gone more smoothly. Before booking Mike I had read a past review from someone saying, “Book him while you can because he’s going to get big fast!” – and that could not have been more true. A large part of the night’s success was from Mike’s ability to play to the crowd, I received compliments on Mike’s behalf all night because of his stellar performance. He is a true artist and professional, thank you again Mike. I look forward to booking you in the future!

As a beginning adult learner, I greatly appreciate John's patience, encouragement, and musical expertise. John draws during each lesson from his own experiences and education to illustrate musical concepts and impart solid technical knowledge. He sets meaningful expectations for the learner and yet is very gentle in uncovering and correcting student weaknesses.
