Beene Concrete Construction LLC was hired by me to do a small porch patch job and a very small ceramic tile replacement job in my main bathroom of my 58 year old home. David arrived on time, with all the tools and supplies he needed. He cleaned up as he went, left both area spotless and wore contractor booties in my home while working on the bathroom. He encountered a poor structural area behind the tile he replaced and worked expertly to fill this void before adhering the new pieced of tile. He was able to tackle a new job for me on the same day even though we had not planned it. He added a new step off the side of my concrete porch. He worked all day until the job was completed, which took much longer than expected due to rain, and again cleaned up wonderfully. Not a spot of left-over concrete was left for me to sweep up and dispose of. He was very professional and friendly the entire day. All three items he did for me are of the best quality. The new step looks terrific and adds so much value to my back door. I would highly recommend him for concrete work and other handy man jobs around the house.

I called Travis on a Thursday after receiving a ridiculously high quote from a traditional handyman service - by noon on Thursday, I was given a SUPER reasonable quote and the drywall project was complete by Sunday. Travis was awesome, kept me informed, and was quick and clean with his work. 10/10 would recommend to others and rehire for future projects.

I cannot say enough great things about Al's work. I thought I was going to be in a bind when a different company became non-responsive however through Thumbtack I found Al and his company and he was very easy to work with. He met me at the job site to take a look at the repair needed on my schedule and provided instant feedback on what would need to be done along with an initial time estimate. His quote was competitive and the work was top notch. No complaints on the repair whatsoever, for a fix that included external siding, internal drywall, window replacement, and paint, among other things. On top of it, he was professional and very easy to work with. I would highly recommend Al for contracting and construction needs.

In August we had the Jokela group renovate a small bathroom in our house in Kalamazoo which was built in the 1950s. They removed the very old black-and-white checkered tile from the walls and then beautifully replastered them. The rest of the renovation (vanity, tub, surround, floor) went extremely well and my wife and I decided to ask for their help with another house we used to live in and still own. It is an old house in Lansing (built around 1920s). It needed a lot of work; Plaster, kitchen, roof, painting, carpet complete w floor plan changes in bath and kitchen, siding repair and more. It has been difficult in the past for me to find a full-service general contractor with the experience and the know how to solve problems in an older home like this. Many will simply not return my calls. Houses this old and older were often not built to accommodate modern developments in rooms like bathrooms-so redoing one in a house like this can be problematic. The Jokela group makes it look easy. More importantly, if and when unforeseen issues arise Dennis Jokela is quick to communicate and discuss options. Also, there were times when he noticed issues and made adjustments based on his experience and know-how that were right on track. I enthusiastically recommend Dennis and his crew for general contracting work. Especially if like myself if you have had trouble finding contractors who are knowledgeable about and willing to work on small, older homes.

We had a 3-foot stress crack in the ceiling over our second story staircase. It was up to 4-inches from the edge of the wall with some of the drywall tape peeling off. I spoke with Jory who promptly called back and asked to have some pictures of the area that needed work to be sent right over. We made an appointment and he was there 2 days later to do the repair. He showed up on time and finished the work in less than 2 hours. The ceiling needed retexturing and when he was finished it looked great. He even brought in him own vacuum cleaner and vacuumed the area. Definitely give Artistic Drywall a call.

Al and his crew installed Exterior door and storm door. They did a professional job and cleaned up. I discovered a problem with the latch on the storm door; I called him and he came and fixed it within an hour. I would not hesitate to recommend him for any home carpentry needs in the future.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

  • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
  • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

  • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
  • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
  • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).
