We inherited our house from my parents and I was looking for ideas and ways to bring it up to todays' standards and styles. I requested NWT Services to come out and look over our home to give us their thoughts on ideas to make our home, our home! The technicians not only presented us with some good ideas, but when they put it all into working perspective we were blown away! We had them finish our basement, remodel our kitchen and remodel our bathrooms, and also some general items in rest of home. I have dealt with contractors in the past, but Nick and his company are different. By that, they are of the caring nature, they get the job done, are clean, punctual, professional, honest and also are not expensive. They treated us and our home with respect. These are things that are lost amongst many contractors. I could tell that whoever taught them their line of work, taught them the right way. I would highly recommend for any project, large or small. We will always call them back for anything we need done.

Great Service, owner Tom listened to what I wanted worked within my budget and had an affordable solution for my landscaping design. Prompt service, job completed the day after I hired them, would recommend them to anyone looking for professional company, respectful employees and most importantly affordable landscaping needs. Big or small jobs, they are equipped to handle both with ease. Left work site clean, something that you do not always get with contractors! Hire them again in a heartbeat!

We needed work done on our house that we are trying to sell; Mike was extremely professional and prompt in providing a detailed estimate and recommendation, and then in getting the job done. Because we moved quite far from our house, he made working with him extra easy by communicating via text and email when needed. I wish all contractors were like Mike!

Tom is the best. OI have hired him in the past to redo and extend an old deck which turned out fantastic! Now he is in the process of finishing my basement and I am thrilled with the framing work he did in the 1250 sq foot space. I will definitely continue to hire Tom as not only are his costs reasonable, he always call me back and shows up on time. When i have tried to hire out other handyman or contractors its been the opposite. A lot of no shows or half done work that I they never call me back and go dark.

Jim was the answer to my prayers. I had a small electrical issue in my home that needed to be addressed urgently. The electrical outlet for my washer:dryer went out on a Saturday afternoon with a full load of laundry in it. I called Jim and he explained it would be a simple job and that I could even replace the GFCI unit myself with some instruction over the phone. Incredibly, Jim taught me how to do the outlet installation over the phone at no charge! He saved me a bunch of money, and ensured that I did the repair safely. I can't thank Jim enough for his time and tremendous customer service on a Saturday afternoon. I will definitely be utilizing this contractor for all of my future electrical needs.

Alex was extremely nice and very professional! He was able to take care of several of my projects without any issues and each one turned out great. I also appreciated that he committed to an arrival time and followed through with it; (I've had some bad experiences with contractors before). All in all, very good experience and I will be hiring him again when needed.

Hector and his crew replaced the front half of my double drive which had been badly cracked and had sunken in. I had five contractors bid the job. Hector's knowledge and quality of materials was up there with the highest price contractors but he was able to beat their bids slightly. What really set him over the top that no one else did was that he offered to fill a large depression in the lawn next to the driveway as well for no extra charge. Maybe it's a little thing, but it shows his commitment to excellence. The driveway looks great.

The job wasn’t major but I’m sure he is capable of the big jobs too! The review only lets u choose 3 but Calvin was all that and a bag of chips! I have a bad track record with handyman and/or contractors. He came, he saw he conquered! I look forward to making him my resident handyman and working with him more in the future. Thanks Calvin! See u soon🙌🏾👍🏾👏🏾👌🏾👋🏾

Can’t say enough good things about Justin and his team. I never thought I could use the word punctual with contractors- but he got here within minutes every time of when he said he would. He is very professional. My husband loved how prompt he was, he returned texts and phone calls right away and is very, very fair priced. As far as work quality- we can’t say enough good things. He was very meticulous , did more then what we even asked for. Very clean work and they did an amazing job in our house. We had recess lighting put in, paint done, and chandeliers hung, and some moved. They made our house look brand new again by fixing up all the little dings in the wall. Would recommend to anyone- already gave his number out to family.

Jam RESTORATION LLC was quick to respond to my call and serviced my project giving affordable prices. Very respectful and finished my request in a timely fashion. To add to that, the prices compared to commercial and other contractors were better and his services are licensed which is really important. I highly recommend David Sandercott for your next big repair or renovation.

Alex and AP Carpentry were outstanding! I got hooked up with AP carpentry through thumbtack to do the siding on my garage and they exceeded my expectations. First and foremost, Alex was responsive and timely in his communication. He called and texted back, showed up on time, and finished the job when he said he would. Secondly, they went out of their way to do things over and above. One example; My garage has a TV mount, speakers, and some lighting hanging on the outside and they took that into consideration and put in special pieces I could remount to once they were done. I didn't know it was an option, but I didn't have to know, they knew what was right and make it great. Lastly, while I saw they were doing the metal trim around the garage windows I asked them if they could fix a window on the house that had got dinged up. They remembered to take care of it even after a quick passing conversation and the cost was minimal. I would recommend AP carpentry to anyone who needs siding, roofing, etc. Their communication, skills/knowledge, and price make them a GREAT contractor to know.

Alex was a breath of fresh air as far as dealing with contractors. Not one excuse ever left his mouth. He was on time both days of the job, worked 10 hours the first day. Drywall and mudding skills are top-notch. After painting, my 1973 drywall appears brand new. I would recommend him to everyone and will be calling on him for future projects. Class act!

I can not say enough good things about Michael! He came out on a very short notice due to another contractor going MIA half way through, started the next day and finished the following. All over a holiday weekend! He saves our butts, and did a great job. What you get when you hire him is an honest, kind, and hardworking guy. I have already recommended him to friends and wouldn't hesitate to hire him again.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

What do construction project managers do?

Construction project managers help in all stages of your construction project, starting from the very first step. Typically paid a percentage of a total project cost, they are part of the design and planning process and help ensure seamless communication between the design parties and the construction team. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, their scope of work includes preparing cost estimates, budgets and work timetables; interpreting and explaining contracts and technical information to other professionals; reporting work progress and budget to clients; collaborating with architects, engineers and other construction pros; selecting subcontractors and scheduling and coordinating their tasks; responding to work delays, emergencies and other problems; and ensuring compliance with legal requirements, building and safety codes, and other regulations.

The work of construction project managers may seem very similar to that of general contractors, but there are some critical differences. One difference is that, unlike most general contractors, project managers are not engaged in the actual construction — they are onsite overseeing the work of subcontractors. Another key difference is that project managers are hired during the design phase, while general contractors are hired after plans have been made. The project manager is generally paid a percentage of the total project cost, while the general contractor is more typically paid according to the bid they gave to build your project.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

How do I find out if a contractor is licensed?

It’s important to know if your project requires work by a licensed professional, as licensing laws can vary by state, locality, and job details. You can find general licensing information online at the government websites that handle occupational licensing for a given profession in your state or location. Some states designate a project cost over which you have to hire a licensed contractor. To find qualified licensed contractors, search your state’s licensing board. For example, in California, the Department of Consumer Affairs operates a searchable database through the Contractors State License Board. In some states, contracting licenses are provided at a regional level. You can find links to specific databases on BRB Publications’ Occupational Licensing page. Red flags that a contractor may not be licensed or may be providing an expired or false license number are unreasonably low bids or a request for complete payment upfront. When should you hire a contractor?

A few home remodeling projects can be done by an ambitious DIY-minded homeowner or local handyman, but many are best completed by a professional home renovation contractor. You should hire a contractor when you’re planning a large project that takes time, machinery or large tools, and several workers; a kitchen remodel, new bathroom or home addition will be most successful with a licensed, expert contractor at the helm. It’s particularly important to have a professional contractor on board for construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC projects that require inspections to meet local building codes. Of course, you can hire a contractor for smaller projects, too, if you prefer to let an expert handle things like addition or removal of a wall, small framing projects, or anything that requires a permit.

You should hire a contractor when you’re ready to start a remodeling project and you have plans, a budget and a timeline for the work in hand, but before any remodeling work begins.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
