I contacted David based on reviews and one of his speciality areas (respiratory). After speaking on the phone, I was even more impressed and knew I would hire him when I was ready. He exceeded my expectations during our first 2 visits (assessments) - he was more thorough than my doctors! I have a very rare lung disease and have to be cautious with how much I exert myself. David read up on my disease and immediately understood it and my limitations. Something that the respiratory therapists at Beaumont were clueless to (despite my discussions with them). In fact their plan set me back in a very negative way (took months to recover). They just throw you on a treadmill, hand bike, etc and check oxygen saturation and blood pressure every so many minutes. No discussions or consideration of my situation other than "we need to show improvement each visit or insurance won't pay". I love the personalization that David offers. I have had about 4-5 sessions so far. David is punctual, professional, thorough, consciousness and patient. He explains the why of each exercise - which is something that is important to me. Through his guidance, I am already able to breath better and deeper and understand how to control it when necessary to oxygenate. We are also working on building my strength. I feel exhililerated and energetic after each session. I am looking forward to working with him on a long term basis and HIGHLY recommend him.

My friends actually call me a “Recovering Engineer” as I started out as an engineer with an MBA, and now work as an Energy Worker and Massage Therapist. When I left my corporate life to work in the alternative healing realm, I really wasn’t familiar with how to run a small business. You may have heard the saying, “When the student is ready, the teacher will appear”. So, when I was introduced to Cedric in early 2003, he became my business coach. Cedric has such a diverse background, he is very knowledgeable, has a great energy, is so positive and such an awesome motivator. One of the biggest benefits I gain from his individual coaching sessions is how I feel after working with him. I literally walk out of his office feeling as though I can accomplish anything and change the world. So, if you are interested in: * being motivated * making positive changes, and * taking your business to the next level contact Cedric at McSween Coaching.

As young newlyweds that had been married for less than a year I honestly felt like my marriage was on the rocks during a time that I thought would be the most joyous and passionately loving part. We weren’t as inseparable as I thought we would be or dreamed we would be. I didn’t know what to do or who to go to seeing as we had just recently moved to Michigan. I surfed the web and came across this thumbtack website and waited to see which professionals I heard back from. Ken was the first and only to respond and as I read up on his profile and website I was very impressed with his background and expertise. I was drawn to the fact that he had been a minister because it meant a lot to myself and my husband to have that spiritual aspect as well. I had never done anything like this and really didn’t know what all to expect. I remember thinking that Ken was going to be providing us with all the answers to fix our marriage. But Ken helped us in ways that we didn’t even expect to be helped and with problems we didn’t even realize that we had. It was great! He didn’t give us the answers he gave us something better which was the tools we needed to realize what the situation was and how to work it out. We became educated on how our personal experiences affected our views on marriage and how it should or shouldn’t be. Turns out we didn’t have as many problems as we thought we did but we grew stronger and closer because of our sessions with Ken and we still use a lot of the things we learned. I felt like I experienced growth in my marriage but also personal growth and development as he recommended great books for me to read for my particular situation. As I felt myself getting very comfortable going to sessions and excited about that time my husband and I were using to invest/sow into our marriage I appreciated the fact that Ken let us know when he felt that we no longer were in need of sessions. He didn’t drag the process out or keep us coming to sessions just for our money and even though a part of me didn’t want things to end because I had gotten comfortable I realized that he was right. We saw Ken for a very effective 3 months that ultimately changed the course of our marriage. We really connected with Ken and almost basically felt like he was that close friend or family member that we could talk to. He just really made us feel comfortable and we were able to open up to him honestly about everything and if we were to ever need any help at all ever again we would go back to him- no doubt. I recommend him to any and every one 100%.

We could not have asked for a better experience while counseling with Jeff. My husband & I had individual sessions as well as joint sessions with Jeff. He is insightful, honest, & has integrity. He has helped us heal wounds from our past & present. He also has helped equip us with the necessary tools to break cycles which were destructive to ourselves & the ones we love. Jeff has many resource tools that are available to help each individual for their specific situation. Our marriage is healed & healthy. But most important are these what we call "life tools" that we have been given to help us for the future trials in life that we know we will face. Thank you Jeff. Bob & Dawn

I have been working with Cat over the years and she has been an instrumental part of my development. She had taken the time to listen to me every time and provide me with amazing advice that was custom tailored to my needs and situations. She empathized with me and helped me achieve better and more balanced interpersonal relationships, improved my marriage, develop self awareness, build up my confidence and adopt a better outlook on life. I feel that I could not have become the person I am today without her guidance. I recommend her to anyone who is struggling with any issues, she is phenomenal.

I began seeing Marina roughly six months ago after experiencing severe depression and anxiety following my marriage. I am surprised how much help she has been in such a short period of time. As a person who has had a difficult time managing anxiety an depression in general, I have seen a few psychologists in my life. None have been as helpful in this amount of time. Since seeking her out, I have been successfully coping for longer spans of time and with less severe instances of anxiety or bouts of depression. For the first time in decades, I am also not experiencing issues with eating and I have learned to love and accept my body. I could not imagine how I would have gotten through the past few month without her.

Over the years, I have been to multiple therapists, and because of this, I've learned to tell when my therapist is just going through the motions or when they actually care. Dr. Andrea cares. You can see it in her eyes and hear it in her voice - when you are speaking with her, Dr. Andrea's attention is focused on you. She wants to help, and that alone makes things a little easier. Knowing that she is there, ready to spend her time with me every week, makes me feel better.

Lara is amazing! She has helped me hone in & own the numbers of my small business over the past year. Will her coaching, I have grown my net profit from $7K Q1-Q3 in 2014 to $56K in 2015. Aside from helping me set and achieve sales goals, Lara has helped me balance raising children with growing a business. I call her my marriage councilor, my business coach, and my friend. I can't say enough about Lara as a person and a professional.

It is my honor to recommend Kimberly for her awesome abilities as a Life Coach. When I began meeting with Kim I had no idea what an eye opening, life changing experience it would be. We've all been to a "therapist", you know the person who writes and nods and mmmhmmm's and ask you about your childhood- But Kim is strong and empathetic, honest and realistic, fair and tough. You indeed talk about your past so you know who you were but you move on, you focus on the future, you grow- you FEEL growth when you speak to her, you have moments of extreme discomfort then moments of extreme clarity. As a coach Kim took me from a cynic to a woman at peace. Kim's coaching skills took me on a journey through me and I wasn't broken to begin with but Kim helped me realize how critical we all can be of ourselves and how every single day of our lives is about growth and passion and purpose and not the negative or the bags that weigh us down from our past. Kim is truly a gem and a big glimmer on my life's timeline as she has given me so many reasons to smile and be thankful for my wonderful life, career and family. Kim is the coach of coaches... no need for Red Bull- Kim will give you wings... (and maybe even a rocket pack). I humbly and strongly recommend Kim as a Strategic Intervention Life Coach, even if you think you're chugging along fine through life- She has a way of making you shine just a little bit brighter. Thank you Kim, from the bottom of my heart for all your coaching and guidance!

I have seen Rachel for several years now. Nobody does a deep tissue massage better than Rachel, and I have seen several massage therapists. I am a dentist and because of my profession often have back issues. I would not be in the good condition I am in now, without the regular deep tissue massages by Rachel!

My husband was apprehensive about seeing a counselor who is a woman for fear she'd be bias, but he was pleasantly surprised and comfortable talking to Melva about issues in our marriage. I felt Melva was supportive to both of us, gave us homework that actually helped, and taught us how to communicate better. Not only would I recommend her, I have recommended her many times.

I visited Jim to help me navigate out of the throes of depression. He was quite welcoming and from the moment I entered his office I felt as though I was visiting a good friend. He makes you want to listen to him with his words of wisdom and experience. He also has this intuitive ability to key in on your areas of deficiency without asking intrusive questions. He is one of those therapists who are in the practice to help others as he will spend quality time with his patients for a standard fee -- time was not an issue at all. I left his office feeling like I had taken a major step into a healing process with a mentor with whom I can complete this journey. Thanks Jim.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a life coach?

A professional, accredited life coach works with people to help them make important changes in their life, either growing in their profession or changing gears in their personal lives. They help clients turn their dreams or wishes into realistic, attainable goals. They guide people through the process of making life changes by helping them evaluate the steps they must take to reach a particular goal, then help them decide how — and whether — to take those steps in the most efficient, effective and rewarding way possible. A life coach acts as a motivator, strategist and accountability partner. Unlike a therapist, a life coach doesn’t help solve problems from your past — they’re focused on helping you move forward with new ways of acting and thinking that will help you reach your goals. Some people specialize in particular types of life coaching, including life balancing coaches, small business coaches, executive coaches and personal finance coaches. Some meet clients in person, while others hold consultations over the phone.

Regardless of which type of life coach you’re interested in, make sure the person holds an International Coach Federation (ICF) credential. There are three tiers of credentials: Associate, Professional and Master, which require coaching experience ranging from 100 hours to 2,500 hours.

    What is a psychologist?

A psychologist is a professionally trained mental health professional who helps patients navigate challenging life situations or mental health issues. To become a psychologist you must earn a doctoral degree; qualifying degrees include a Ph.D., Psy.D. or Ed.D. To actively practice, a psychologist must be licensed in their state and maintain good standing. Psychologists are trained to administer tests that can evaluate a patient’s cognitive strength and weaknesses, intellectual skills, vocational aptitude and preference, personality characteristics, and neuropsychological functioning, explains the American Psychological Association (APA).

A psychologist meets with patients in an office and may work with a variety of methods, depending on patient need, such as cognitive, behavioral or interpersonal.  According to the APA, common reasons a person may visit a psychologist include:

    • Dealing with depression, anger or anxiety over a long period of time.
    • Help with a chronic condition that is interfering with their lives or physical health.
    • Help with grieving and other abrupt transitions.
    • Overcoming addictions.
    • Managing chronic illness.
    • Breaking old and harmful patterns of thinking or behavior.

What are the types of psychologists?

Psychologists are healthcare professionals who use scientific methods to understand the relationships between the brain, environment and behavior. Psychologists may focus on research — studying how the brain and various environments drive behaviors to better understand the issues that trouble patients and society as a whole — or they may focus on practice — interacting with people using therapeutic methods. The American Psychological Association shares some of the more prevalent types of psychologists:

    • Clinical psychologists assess and treat mental, emotional and behavioral disorders.
    • Cognitive and perceptual psychologists study human perception, thinking and memory.
    • Community psychologists work to strengthen the abilities of communities, settings, organizations and broader social systems to meet people’s needs — such as improving support for victims of natural disasters, or working to improve health policies.
    • Counseling psychologists help people understand and take action on everyday issues, career and work problems, and serious adversity.
    • Developmental psychologists study the psychological development of the human being throughout life.
    • Educational psychologists concentrate on how effective teaching and learning take place.
    • Engineering psychologists conduct research on how people work best with machines.
    • Environmental psychologists study the dynamics of how people interact with their environments.
    • Evolutionary psychologists study how evolutionary principles such as mutation, adaptation and selective fitness influence human thought, feeling and behavior.
    • Experimental psychologists study cognitive processes, comparative psychology (cross-species comparisons), and learning and conditioning.
    • Forensic psychologists apply psychological principles to legal issues.
    • Health psychologists specialize in how biological, psychological and social factors affect health and illness.
    • Industrial/organizational psychologists apply psychological principles and research methods to the workplace to improve productivity, health and the quality of work life.
    • Neuropsychologists and behavioral neuropsychologists explore the relationships between brain systems and behavior.
    • Quantitative and measurement psychologists focus on methods and techniques for designing experiments and analyzing psychological data.
    • Rehabilitation psychologists work with stroke and accident victims, people with mental disabilities, and those with developmental disabilities caused by such conditions as cerebral palsy, epilepsy and autism.
    • School psychologists assess and counsel students, consult with parents and school staff, and conduct behavioral interventions when appropriate.
    • Social psychologists study how a person’s mental life and behavior are shaped by interactions with other people.
    • Sport psychologists help athletes refine their focus on competition goals, become more motivated, and learn to deal with anxiety and fear of failure around competition.

How much does a life coach cost?

A life coach helps clients set and reach professional and personal goals, develop positive habits, and deal with stress. Some people meet with a life coach once or twice, while others form an ongoing professional relationship, meeting regularly in person or on the phone. The average national cost to meet with a life coach ranges from $80 to $130 an hour. Some coaches offer per-session pricing, especially for one-time meetings; expect to pay an average of $100-$125. People who want to work with a coach over a period of time to explore life transitions, career growth or lifestyle changes may be able to get discounted pricing in a package. For example, three 60-minute sessions cost an average of $300, four 60-minute sessions cost an average of $350, and four 60- to 90-minute sessions plus unlimited contact between sessions cost an average of $400. Some specific types of coaching, such as relationship or marriage coaching, cost more than standard life coaching. For instance, three 60-minute relationship coaching sessions cost an average of $500, four 60-minute sessions cost an average of $550, and six 60- to 90-minute sessions cost an average of $650 when purchased as a package. Training and experience can also affect the cost of hiring a life coach. An Associate Certified Coach, who holds a certification that requires only 60 hours of training and 100 hours of coaching experience, will charge less than a Master Certified Coach, who typically has at least 200 hours of training and 2,500 hours of coaching experience.

    How much do therapists cost?

If you are experiencing a challenging time, have mental health difficulties, or just want professional guidance as you move through life, a therapist can provide relief, tools and structure. The national average cost for a therapist is $80-$100 per hour, although prices may be higher or lower depending on geographic location and the experience and training of the therapist.

Psychiatrists, psychologists and licensed therapists are all health professionals who offer various modalities of therapy. Ask questions about the type of therapy they specialize in (such as cognitive or behavioral, etc.) and their area of expertise (such as grief, anxiety, body image disorders, etc.) to help you find the right fit for your needs. Therapy sessions are typically 50-60 minutes long.  The patient usually meets with the therapist in their office; sessions may also be held remotely (via Skype, etc.) or in a clinical setting. Psychologists, psychiatrists and other therapists who have earned advanced degrees will typically charge higher rates than other licensed therapists. Depending on your diagnosis, your health insurance may cover your therapy costs.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
