Great guy, did a quick job getting set up and tearing down. Quick witted with the kids and family during the session. Only thing I would have liked more ahead of time is knowing what could and could not be edited out of the pictures. My family needed someone who would tell us which side of our faces was more photogenic, etc...Photographer was very professional.

My husband and I have worked with multiple photographers for professional and personal reasons in Michigan and could not have been more impressed with Kuwan and the Red Archie photography team. Kuwan is the owner and talent behind RAP. He is also highly motivated and easy to work with. Prior to the photoshoot (our package was 1 hour for professional headshots with 10 edited images), he provided detailed instructions and ideas for wardrobe and location and was even willing to move the date up when our plans changed. He responded to all our emails immediately and was very friendly from the beginning. The day of the shoot he arrived on location on time with a number of tools / camera equipment and was quick to set up and get started. He provided feedback on what looked best and coaching for the optimal posing which was helpful and allowed me to feel comfortable. We did multiple locations / outfit changes and he was patient and receptive to ideas as well as really optimistic with great energy. I appreciated him showing me some of the photos as well as going over the 1 hour window of time so we got all the shots we wanted and didn't feel rushed. In the end, the photos turned out amazing (I get so many compliments on how professional and flattering they are) and the turn around time was even quicker. Once we received the gallery of images and picked our favorites, he had them edited and finalized in 48 hours. We liked more than 10 so he threw in a few extra and made some minor retouching tweaks for me no charge... honestly, it couldn't have been better. I probably sound like a fake review at this point but after having headshots for 4+ companies / websites, this was the best experience I've had with a photographer so I'm happy to sing Kuwan's praises. I would highly recommend him and the Red Archie for anyone seeking portraits, headshots, or a website/business card/LinkedIn revamp. He is an amazing talent in metro Detroit.

We are so happy we found Dan to be our wedding videographer. When I was looking to hire someone, I wanted to make sure I knew what we were getting, since some other videographers only produce a short highlighted reel. Dan provides both a long version and highlight, which is very important so the speeches and dances are included. Dan is so talented at what he does. My husband and I cry every time we watch our videos. Dan is masterful in his editing. He produces a work of art that evokes a nostalgic feeling from seeing your experience from a new perspective. He also focuses on what matters most, the people involved in the special day. He is professional, responsive, and so kind. One of the nicest wedding vendors we worked with! He was very open to making changes after the initial video was sent to us. He is very skilled at being invisible when he is working, which is such an important trait to have when you are videotaping people and wanting them to act natural! We suspect he may be a wizard... We highly recommend Dan!!

Ryan was extremely creative and professional. He took a ton of pictures at several locations and didn't rush or get inpatient during wardrobe changes or location changes. Would definitely recommend him to anyone looking for a photographer for any occasion. I was looking for a unique photographer instead of a large corporate chain with the same old backdrops/poses and Ryan was exactly what I wanted.

We picked Bill to do the video for our wedding, however, something came up and we had to cancel the video. Bill was very kind and understanding through the whole ordeal. He is also very professional. I wish he could have been there but I still would recommend him because as a videographer he is amazing but as a person he is truly special. If you hire this man you will definitely be glad you did!

J was an OUTSTANDING hire for our event. We hosted an alumni reception in Detroit and didnt know any photographers in the area so I looked to Thumbtack. He really worked with our requests and captured everything we wanted! He made sure to get the committee and staff photographed, all of the photos has great lighting, a majority of the photos were staged with alumni looking and smiling at the camera (name tags visible) which is fantastic and exactly what we hoped for! It takes a great photographer to ask people to stage for the camera and yet also capture excellent candid photos. I wish we could use him for every market we visit! Even before the event, he was very professional on the phone and in correspondence. I would recommend him to anyone needing an event photographer.

Excellent photographer! We hired them for our engagement shoot and civil wedding. Highly recommend Tyquan and his team! Tyquan did our engagement shoot and did a phenomenal job, EXCELLENT photos and we were super happy with everything! He helped us with all the poses, where to shoot, angles, etc. and was very fun to work with. We thought he did an awesome job and were super impressed. He was really laid back and let us checkout the photos as he shot them. Went the extra mile and beyond with everything and definitely made everything very light, easy and fun! The photos during the civil ceremony were incredible as well! Overall they did an awesome job, were very responsive and always available for questions (we usually text, and Tyquan gets back to us very fast), great group of guys, all super nice and easy to work with throughout. Definitely keeping these guys as my #1 pick for what comes next for us (baby showers? other events!). Overall my wife and I were and are super happy with -everything-! Again, amazing photos, fun to work with, great group of guys and they definitely know their stuff! Thanks again for everything and keep up the great work!

My wife and I hired him to do the photography for our wedding. He was very professional and friendly (which really helps when it comes to comfort levels, especially with the little flower girls). He kept in touch with us. He came to the rehearsal to be prepared for what we had planned so that the wedding day was smooth and went as expected. We gave him a list of a few shots that we really wanted and he got them all as well as a few that were unique. We had our wedding at Crystal Gardens of Southgate, MI. The place is beautiful and he captured that in our pictures. We had the room with the outside patio and gazebo and he took advantage of all of the great scenery the place had to offer. Our wedding and reception was from 4:30 to 11:30 and he was there for majority of the night. He snapped away until the battery ran out, which was after all of the events. He took pictures of our guests, which I didn't expect, but was happy about; The day went by so fast I didn't get a chance to see everybody and some people came from out of state to attend and it has been a while since I've last seen them. I was very impressed with his work. The battery running out was probably the only thing that went wrong, and that was after about 700 pictures were taken, so nothing was missed. I would highly recommend hiring him if you are looking for a someone that knows what they are doing with a camera. A wedding day is not something you want a rookie doing.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a videographer and what do they do?

A videographer professionally films weddings and other events and edits the footage to create film keepsakes or marketing materials for their clients. Wedding videographers record all the key elements of your wedding day, ceremony and reception, and then edit the hours of film during post-production to make a wedding video, social media highlight reels, and any other film features you choose. Wedding videography captures, in live action, your vows, the cake-cutting, the first dance, reception toasts, the decor, the guests and all the details of your day. Many wedding videographers also interview guests (based on an interview list provided by the couple) and incorporate the recorded responses into the wedding video. Event videography typically costs less than wedding videography, as events are shorter with less detail. The national average cost for event videography is $500-$760, while the national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. A videographer usually does not need to be licensed, but it is important to confirm they have insurance and good standing in the business community, as well as good client reviews. A great majority of the work happens during post-production. The pros watch and blend together the hours of footage they took (sometimes from multiple cameras) to capture the story of your wedding day or event.

How do you choose a wedding videographer?

A wedding videographer will create a lifetime memory for you from edited video footage of your wedding day, ceremony and reception. Choosing a wedding videographer starts with looking online at portfolios of their past work. There’s no need to talk to anyone unless you love what you see. Next, make sure they have good reviews and past client experience; don’t be shy about asking for references if there aren’t any posted online. When you find someone who has a style you love, ask if they are available on your wedding day. If so, it’s time to talk pricing. Be clear about your maximum budget, and ask what kind of packages they offer. Pricing will depend on the number of crew needed for filming, the hours they are required to be onsite, post-production editing, and the length of the final product. Talk with several wedding videographers to get a feel for what prices are like in your region. Nationally, the average cost for wedding videography ranges between $990 and $1,260 per event. Once you agree on a product and have a plan, get everything in a written and signed contract. Clearly state the details of what is expected for your wedding day and from the final product. Be prepared to pay a deposit to reserve their services for the day, then pay the remainder upon receiving the video.

What should you ask your wedding videographer before hiring?

Finding the perfect wedding videographer doesn’t have to be stressful. Asking a few key questions upfront will help you find the right fit for your big day. Before talking with wedding videographers, research their work online. Look at their websites, business profiles and social media, and see what their finished wedding videos look like. If the style fits what you’re envisioning, it’s time to reach out. During initial contact, make sure you get along with the person. This is important since they’ll be interacting with you and your guests.

Your first question should be about their availability; there’s no point in going further if they’re booked on your wedding day. Ask to see references if they’re not readily available online. Next, it’s time to talk about money. Ask how they determine rates or what kind of packages they offer. When you settle on a rate and the services you want, make sure to have a written contract that outlines everything, including cost, length of time they film, what post-production will include, and when you can expect to receive the edited project.

How much does it cost for a photographer for a wedding?

Finding the right wedding photographer can make a big difference for your ceremony. Nationally, the average wedding photographer’s price ranges from $800 to $1,000, but costs can be much higher in areas like Chicago, New York or Los Angeles where some couples spend $2,000 to $5,000 or more for the photographer they want. Factors that can affect your wedding photographer prices include the photographer’s reputation and experience. Heavy hitters can command top rates, especially during wedding-season weekends. Day of the week also affects your cost. You may get a $200 discount on wedding photographer prices if you get married on a Friday in November rather than a Saturday in June. Time onsite is also an important cost factor. Hiring a photographer to snap photos from the moment you wake up until after last call at the reception is going to cost more than five hours of pictures during the day. Multiple photographers, special lighting, and videography will also increase your costs. Ultimately you want to find someone who has a style you love and can provide the number of edited shots you want for a price you can handle. Learn more about hiring a wedding photographer.

When do you pay your wedding videographer and wedding photographer?

Most wedding videographers and photographers require a set deposit when you hire them. Wedding season is a busy time and a deposit secures that vendor’s services for your wedding date. It also protects the vendor if the couple changes their mind at the last minute, and they can’t find a new booking and lose work for the day. The deposit may be anywhere from 20 percent to  50 percent of the agreed-upon total price. Always get a written confirmation that your deposit has been received.

The remainder of the wedding videography and photography bill may be due in the week before to your wedding or on the day of the wedding. Other vendors may require a second payment immediately before the wedding and a third and final payment after the wedding video or photos are delivered. Each vendor has their own policies, so before hiring be sure to read, understand and agree to payment protocols. There is no requirement for tipping wedding videographers or photographers, but if you do want to tip them, the end of the reception is the appropriate time.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
