Barbara came to our house to help us with our German Shepherd. We rescued our year and a half old GS from a shelter. I'll start this review by explaining what behaviors our dog needed to work on. He would play bite, he wouldn't listen when called, and would tug on his leash NON-STOP when on a walk. He was never aggressive towards us, but he would play bite. Barbara showed us how to get our dog to make eye contact with us, she showed us a variety of training methods to practice with our dog, and she showed us how to be in control when on a walk. We saw major improvements in the dogs attitude towards us within the first session. He no longer play bites, and with all the training methods Barbara showed us our dog is on his way to becoming an extremely well behaved dog. Barbara's session was extremely informative and fun for us and for our dog. We now have a much better understanding of our dog. I highly recommend Barbara to others, she's an expert and knows what shes doing when it comes to dog training and general dog behavior.

Jessica was a miracle worker with our pomsky Miney. She came and picked her up and spent the next 10 days training her. Miney has come home a completely different dog. Jessica is an animal expert like I've never seen before. She has an ability to tap into exactly what the dog and the owner needs to have a successful training experience. When she brought Miney back she gave me an extensive worksheet on everything about my dog and a complete breakdown of everything I need to do to insure that her training continues successfully at home. I'm completely blown away and would highly recommend Jessica to anyone with any dog training or boarding needs. I cannot thank her enough for all of her help with Miney!

We have just begun puppy training but came away knowing this was a very positive experience for both the dogs and their owners. They let the puppies teach each other. What a concept! Amazing how well that works. There are several trainers around to help direct and instruct. We definitely recommend Clever Canine Dog Training.

We were having issues with our pit bull puppy such as leash pulling, chasing our cat, and slight aggression. Katerina gave us the tools to correct her behavior and we have noticed a significant improvement. Katerina came to our home and even brought her dog to help our dog with her dog aggression. I have recommended her to friends that are having similar issues with their dog.

Patty is awesome! She gave us the tools and knowledge to start raising a happy and healthy pup. What we've learned is that dog training is more about human training. Patty gives you all the tools and then it's up to you and your family to implement these practices into your everyday interaction with your furry friend. Our pup Yoshi is happier! We can really see the difference since Patty came into the picture.

Steve has been a great professional to work with throughout the training of our German Shepard. His training techniques have worked great, and has shown over the first 6 weeks of training. The results have been so successful, that we just signed a second contract for his level 2 training course. I would recommend Best of Friends Dog Training to anyone looking for an experienced dog trainer with results that work!

I was very happy with Tony's training techniquies. I trust him with my pups and in my home. I loved the calm and confident energy that he has when working with dogs that aren't even his own. I would highly recommend him for training your dog for any need at all. I have a very large Great Pyreneese with some food agression and it has beeen amazing to see what just understanding the dog mantality will do for improving the living situation with you and your family dog.

Mandi has opened our eyes to the value of positive training - in just a few sessions we fell in love again with our rescue dog kiko I don't know where we would be without her help, patience and guidance. She also has given us much more confidence too!

Beej has a real passion for animals! She takes my dog out 1-2x a day while I am at work and leaves detailed notes about their experiences. My dog absolutely loves Beej, who provides stimulation, attention, and even puppy massages at times. I have complete faith that my dog is well taken care of while I am away and have referred Beej's services to my friends and neighbors.

Tiyanna's ability to train a service dog was excellent. Her dog KUF--worked with individuals who need to use wheelchair for mobility. KUF helped them while in and out of their chair making life easier. He was also a great companion to them while be their side. Mimi is our other dog who assists with service related therapy. As a smaller dog Tiyanna trained her to help stroke patients gain or increase the use of hands and arms affected by their stroke. Mini is a snuggle dog, fluffy and sweet with just the right temperament and training to help keep her friends in need get better. Tiyanna is an awesome trainer!!

When my husband died, I needed someone to watch my dog, Boi-Boi, while I was at work 5 days a week. Thank God for Howie! He's close to home and takes care of my Boi like he was his own pet. I would recommend Howie to anyone who needs a short or long term care solution for their beloved pets.

Bonny is very knowledgeable and experienced and you can tell she loves dogs. She gave me very thorough instruction on training my dog. She is patient and understanding and knows that every dog is different and she tailors her lessons based on the dog and myself. I would hire her again in a minute - highly recommended!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

    • What type of training methods do you use?
    • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
    • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

My 2-year old son has severe allergy to peanuts, and moderate allergies to other foods such as pistachios, mango, eggs, and cashews along with cats, dogs and rodents. We got a mini-golden doodle puppy from a local reputable breeder who is now about 11 weeks old. He seems to be adjusting well to the dog without allergic reactions. Just looking for more information and support on how we could use this very bright puppy to protect our son. Interested in knowing when and how we would train Sugar to support him and become a service dog.
