Steve was great. I was very hesitant to hire a DJ because our budget was very small. We are very happy we made the decision to hire him for our wedding. We didn't think the dance floor would get much use besides the first dance with the crowd we had, but he had the dance floor busy all night long. He created the atmosphere we hoped for. Thank you Steve!

Our oldest son has taken lessons with Rachelle since he was in the fourth grade and he is now going into the eight grade. While taking lessons from Rachelle, he was accepted and joined St. Cecilia's Music band. Our youngest son, who is going into the 6th grade, has taken lessons from Rachelle and without her teaching he would have struggled his entire first year in band. Both boys enjoy their lessons with Rachelle and I enjoy the expectations she has of them but also the fun she makes the lessons.

The Stolen Horses Band puts on a great show! There is never a dull moment while these guys are on stage. This group has great chemistry which shines through there music. The original songs have a lot of flavor between the vocals and guitar work. There is a lot of talent all around in this band, they are GREAT performers and every show is a surprise!

We were so happy that you, Raquel and your band were part of Lindsey and Brad's special day.   We have heard so many comments on how great the music was for the reception.   So many commented on how much they enjoyed the dinner music and what a class act you were.   True to your other performances you kept the wedding guests dancing the entire night!!!!!   There were two other weddings at the hotel that night and we heard people in the elevator and then later the next morning talking about the awesome band that was playing in the Ambassador ballroom! Please feel free to use us as a reference for anyone considering you for their party.  You may also want to suggest the dinner music as this really impressed a lot of our guests. We will definitely try to get to Maggianos when you're scheduled there and hopefully a few other places to hear the band. We would also like to get together with you sometime for a glass of wine or two. Below is a link to a highlight video from the wedding.   When we get the entire video we can send it to you as there may be parts with your band playing which you may like to see. Thanks again.  Hope to see you and Raquel soon! Deb Lehman

David Stone has been involved with the arts whether it be acting, singing or playing music since he was 5 years old. He is versatile, and comfortable in all genres from classic show tunes to modern day alternative folk/rock. He has appeared in many productions and was featured in lead roles as Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof and Sky Masterson in Guys and Dolls. He also performed with Central High School Choral Aires in Europe and throughout Michigan. He is an accomplished percussionist, plays keyboards, bass and guitar in contemporary bands and has excellent stage presence. He has performed many times for The Traverse City Film Festival, StonesHouse fundraisers, and countless private functions. David also works well with young adolescents and is an excellent teacher. He demonstrated this ability even when he played basketball in high school and was a role model for younger players while they attended sports camps. He demonstrates the same patience and encouragement with younger, aspiring music students. His many original compositions are truly melodic and reflect the sensitivity and deep emotion that touches the soul of his audience.

One of the fullest sounding, and most diverse bands I have ever seen. The range of music they perform is amazing. Calling them a classic rock band is too limiting, as they also play much more current music, including dance music from Pink, Bruno Mars, Maroon 5, and others. It really shows that all 4 members are all incredibly talented and absolutely love to perform for a crowd. They do it all and they do it all well. They are incredibly professional, and I just can't say enough good things about Bar Code.

The picture of the lovely bride and handsome groom in the military uniform is my son and new dughter-in-law at their wedding reception in the Union on the campus of Michigan State University five years ago. I can say without a doubt that the Rhythm Section Jazz Band was the best wedding band I have had the pleasure of hearing. Song choices were great, music great, wonderful personalities in the band. They really helped make that warm July day last in my memory. Five years and three babies later, you can still see some of their wedding pictures on Facebook. Thanks guys and gals.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

    • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
    • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
    • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.
