Thumbtacks commercials worked. I recently truly learned the brevity of life. I have always wanted to learn guitar but never got far on my own. I believe in Heaven I will have plenty of time to praise God and play any instrument I pick up. However this life is short. Learning guitar will be a wonderful way to connect with my two children here on Earth while also being a therapeutic outlet as I miss my sweet baby in Heaven. That is a very weighty reason to learn guitar and I was astounded at how well my instructor handled it! She was so kind and sensitive to were I was. I brought my 3 year old and she was also perfectly able to teach even in the slightly distracted environment. I felt she valued both of us being there. As far as my first lesson and her instructing I would easily give Southtown guitar 5 stars. I have anxiety and a tendency to go along with things even when I don’t truly understand them. My instructor was phenomenal at picking up on that and pausing at times and asking me to explain why we were doing certain things. And if I had no idea she was not the least bit judgmental. I sensed she was truly committed to teaching me. She wanted me to get the very most out of our time and my money. Because of her recognizing how I learn and taking the time to have me explain things to myself I felt I left my very first appointment with far more than I anticipated. I don’t see any reason that will change in the weeks to come!! I don’t think I would have tried this adventure if it were not the ease expressed in the Thumbtack commercials. I also want to put myself out there and say because it is in a busy area of town I was very nervous I would have to parallel park on the street. It’s embarrassing but that would probably be a deal breaker. I was so grateful there is a lot just around the block!! I put that out there for anyone who also has anxiety issues. Between thumbtacks ease the lot and the instructors kindness my anxiety was not a problem. The instructor also gave me a little log book and was very clear on what to practice for “homework”. I still can’t believe we actually covered tuning, guitar anatomy, notes, and she had me playing a few notes already on my first lesson! I also enjoyed the “real ness” for lack of a better word of Southtown guitar. The owner and my instructor didn’t give an impersonal vibe. They were professional but even the building itself was a comfortable environment. Because so many elements came together far beyond my expectations I believe God is in the works of my desire to learn guitar and I think He chose exactly where I would best learn. For Southtown’s sake, I don’t want to add spirituality were it isn’t. So if Christianity puts you off I felt I should add I have no idea if the owner is a Christian and there are no signs or verses posted. It is just a very comfortable little guitar studio :) Again, it’s very easy to rate Southtown Guitar with 5 stars. I am very glad I was lead here and don’t think it will take nearly as long to learn here as I thought it would take me. Thank you Southtown and Thumbtack!

My 13 year old son has a learning disability and cannot read music. He has tried playing 2 different instruments via the school system's band program and it went too fast for him. He is taking banjo lessons with Fred. He came home and is working on his first song. Fred is very patient with him, too, and you can tell he loves sharing what he knows. Very professional and kind. Many thanks.

Details: 45 - 64 years old • 0 - 2 yrs of formal training • Folk • No, the student cannot read music • As recommended by teacher • Once a week • 45 minutes • Ready to hire the right teacher now • I travel to the banjo teacher

He's very encouraging and patient and he's careful to balance proper technique with fun.
