We needed a professional photographer in Grand Rapids for a genealogy conference headshot event that we were sponsoring. I Googled into Thumbtack and was contacted by a few photographers but in my first minute of talking with Sheryl, I knew I'd feel comfortable working with her, and I offered her the job on the spot. Sheryl is both pleasant and professional and that's a great combination! She replied quickly to email questions, provided a formal contract with a requested addendum unique to the situation, and was ready to begin the photoshoot at the appointed time. As I watched her work, I was impressed with two things: her positive, supportive approach to setting people at ease and the knack that she had for coaching people in order to get the best shots. More than one person stood up from the chair, took a look at the photos Sheryl had just taken, and responded with a genuine, heartfelt "Wow, that's really good!" I think that says it all.

I had the most wonderful experience with Elise at ModBettie! I was blown away by the beauty of the studio space as well as how easy it was to instantly love Elise. She made me feel comfortable, confident, and beautiful - truly couldn't have asked for a better photographer. Would highly recommend ModBettie to others, I am absolutely thrilled with how my acting headshots turned out; she captured exactly what I was looking for!

We use Mike for all of our family photo needs. He has done engagement, wedding, newborn, 6 month, and 1 year photos for us. They have all turned out amazingly well, and his responsiveness is amazing. I constantly recommend him to all of our family and friends, and all have agreed that he is excellent at what he does.

Extremely talented photographer. Was very creative and full of ideas when taking my daugters outdoor pictures. The finished product was exceptional. His only area for improvement would be to hire an associate to manage his correspondence with his customers a little more timely and efficiently. Overall, he was nice to work with.

We could not have asked for a better photographer for our wedding. Tim was so accommodating when it came to consultations and was always prepared and professional. He took into account all of our photo ideas as well as came up with many of his own creative ideas. He is so personable and easy going which made working with him such a joy. Something we personally liked was how he was there to capture your big day yet he was often times in the background as to not disturb or interrupt you or your guests. Choosing your photographer for your wedding day is one of the most imperial decisions you will make, for once the day is done your photographs are what you have to look back on. We can proudly say that the photographs that Tim took of our wedding are not only breathtaking but allow us to relive every moment of that day as if it were just yesterday. Thank you so much Tim for all of your hard work we truly enjoyed working with you!

Jessica is very professional, yet also makes it a very fun experience while photographing her clients. She always has new ideas on poses that don't look super "posey," so your pictures will always come out unique! Her turnaround time for editing and getting the photos back to you is very quick and they always come back beautiful. I highly recommend Jessica at Pinky Promise Photography for your professional photographing needs!

Nic took our engagement pictures in the fall of 2012. From the first click of the shutter, we felt natural and like we could be ourselves. Nic captured our true personalities in our photos without making us do awkward poses or anything that would make us feel uncomfortable. He was constantly talking to us and making us feel like we were just hanging out with a good friend the whole time. Nic was very timely with photo edits. None of his edits are over-done, which SO many photographers seem to get into today. He captures real moments and makes them shine! Engagement, wedding, new baby, holiday…whatever the occasion is, having Nic as your photographer is a guaranteed way to make the day a memory you can keep forever.

My daughter and I are thrilled with our experience with Posten Photography. Brian was more than professional and fair, he was considerate. He did not have a problem with extra people coming to help my daughter at the sitting. He worked with us until we were happy with the outcome. He made both me and my daughter feel as if our opinions mattered while still maintaining his creativity as the photographer to obtain images that were artistic rather than just senior photos. I checked out several photographers before deciding on Posten Photography. He was the most accommodating and friendly. My daughter has cerebral palsy which presents special challenges when being photographed. Brian rose to the occasion. I highly recommend him.

Tyler is a man that gives amazing amounts of effort to his craft. He has a great eye for photography, and takes the time to perfect it. Tyler is a great man to work with, and he'll give his opinion on a shot, but wil take ideas and work with them. If you are in need of a photographer for groups, engagement photos, family portraits or anything of the like, he's the guy to go to. Highly recommended

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Where is the best place to take baby pictures?

Baby pictures are among the most popular types of portrait photography, and most newborn photographers are well versed in the best places to take baby pictures in their local areas. Some newborn photographers will come to the hospital to shoot the baby within a day or two of birth, while others have set up their studios to accommodate the needs of infants. Some parents prefer to have the newborn photographer come to their home or travel to a favorite park or other outdoor location. Like any portrait photography, the best place to take baby pictures is the place you like best and that will yield the types of photos you want of your baby, whether that’s posed and carefully lit studio portraits or spontaneous, casual photos at home. Work with a local newborn photographer to find a safe, calm location with great lighting and some privacy for your family.

How much does baby photography cost?

Portrait photography provides parents with lasting images of the first whirlwind months of a newborn’s life. The cost varies based on several factors, including the length and location of the session, the number of photos provided, and the amount of editing and retouching the photographer does. The national average cost for baby photos is $150-$200. Some baby photographers charge by the number of photos provided, typically ranging from an average of $299 for 20 high-resolution edited photos, to an average of $399 for 35 photos, to $499 for all of the images taken in a single session. Props and location affect the cost, too; an elaborate studio shoot with props and professional lighting may increase the cost to $600-$700 for 20-50 photos. Adding a second location or asking the photographer to travel can add $70-$250 to the cost of the session. Photographers may also charge extra fees for providing additional photos and DVDs, scheduling weekend sessions, and shooting siblings. Expect to pay at least a $50 deposit when you book a portrait photography session.

When should you take newborn photos?

Few styles of portrait photography are as tricky as newborn photos — the unpredictable infant is always in charge! The best way to ensure a successful photo shoot is to work with a local newborn photographer within the first two weeks of the baby’s life. Some photographers even work with hospitals to offer newborn sessions within a day of the baby’s birth. But newborn photographers usually recommend scheduling a shoot during the baby’s first two weeks of life, while the baby is still sleepy and relatively cooperative, especially for posed or studio shots. During this time, babies are easier to swaddle in blankets and dress in hats or headbands, and, because they often nap or nurse, can be staged with various props or be cuddled by their parents. For casual photos, most newborn photographers recommend shooting within the first six weeks of a baby’s life. Lifestyle portrait photography is more flexible and doesn’t require the baby to cooperate with multiple poses or props.
