In August we had the Jokela group renovate a small bathroom in our house in Kalamazoo which was built in the 1950s. They removed the very old black-and-white checkered tile from the walls and then beautifully replastered them. The rest of the renovation (vanity, tub, surround, floor) went extremely well and my wife and I decided to ask for their help with another house we used to live in and still own. It is an old house in Lansing (built around 1920s). It needed a lot of work; Plaster, kitchen, roof, painting, carpet complete w floor plan changes in bath and kitchen, siding repair and more. It has been difficult in the past for me to find a full-service general contractor with the experience and the know how to solve problems in an older home like this. Many will simply not return my calls. Houses this old and older were often not built to accommodate modern developments in rooms like bathrooms-so redoing one in a house like this can be problematic. The Jokela group makes it look easy. More importantly, if and when unforeseen issues arise Dennis Jokela is quick to communicate and discuss options. Also, there were times when he noticed issues and made adjustments based on his experience and know-how that were right on track. I enthusiastically recommend Dennis and his crew for general contracting work. Especially if like myself if you have had trouble finding contractors who are knowledgeable about and willing to work on small, older homes.

We had a 3-foot stress crack in the ceiling over our second story staircase. It was up to 4-inches from the edge of the wall with some of the drywall tape peeling off. I spoke with Jory who promptly called back and asked to have some pictures of the area that needed work to be sent right over. We made an appointment and he was there 2 days later to do the repair. He showed up on time and finished the work in less than 2 hours. The ceiling needed retexturing and when he was finished it looked great. He even brought in him own vacuum cleaner and vacuumed the area. Definitely give Artistic Drywall a call.

The Buckeyeboys did a great job for me. I was under a time constraint to get my yard cleaned, back porch painted, hang my attic stairs and repair the bricks on my front porch in order to put my house on the market. They showed up on time, worked after hours for two days to get the job done. The crew was very professional and went the extra mile!! Thanks guys and GREAT work.

Tomas, with TC Renovations, came to my rescue two months or so ago after I posted a help needed ad on the Nextdoor app. If I recall correctly, my ad stated: "Crashing gutters, need help" or something to that effect. He came over, was able to restore, replace, repair (all of the above) various gutters and then expressed concern about the lethal icicles hanging down from the roofline. That opened up a whole new conversation as to the poor ventilation and insulation of my 100 year old home, as well as his concern that the massive icicles could be damaging my roof. Years ago I had received a quote for fixing all of my ventilation and insulation woes, and don't recall how much it was for, except that it was going to cost an arm and a leg, and at that time I had neither to spare. Tomas thoroughly maneuvered his way through the various nooks and crannies of the attic area, measured, took photos, found leaks, damaged rafters and other areas of concern, then later that evening wrote up an extremely detailed email outlining all of the work that needed to be done to make my home a whole lot cozier, not to mention safer. I appreciated the way he broke things down into chunks and provided options, depending on how much I wanted or was able to spend. He did some of the work on evenings and Saturdays, and the bulk of it while I was at work on two separate Tuesdays. The house was empty but I had nary a fear about leaving it open to him. I ended up paying for every option he outlined on the list, as it all just made sense and, although I did not request a second opinion, felt his quotes were reasonable. He finished in a reasonable amount of time. His communication (text, email, in person) was excellent. He bulked up the insulation in my home from way below code (R12) to above code (R61) - and wow can I tell the difference! He was able to provide photos of the various repairs and work he did. The attic is now vented and filled with new insulation, the various openings that had been gaping and drafty with old insulation spilling out are now sealed, tidy and neatly framed in with wood. In fact, I commented on one of the attic closures he built, and his response was, in essence: "I care about my work and want things to look good." I plan to hire Tomas in the future for additional work on this old house. In fact, I take comfort in knowing that I can call on someone like Tomas and trust that he will do a great job at a fair price.

Keith did a great job repairing drywall, where we had removed a wall in a bathroom. He also repaired and textured the ceiling. He worked quickly, cleaned up, and was very pleasant.

Tony is the best! The work he did on our attic renovation was incredible. After a few no quotes because the job was “too difficult” we found Tony who loved the challenge. The job was tough because we have a hip roof, steep ceilings with little vertical wall, throw in 3 dormers, a walk in closet and full bathroom and you get a tounge and groove job not for the faint of heart. Few standard lengths and no standard angles required a lot of measuring, precise cutting, with creative thinking using custom crafted trim to blend it all together. Tony came in well under the cost suggested by those who no quoted. I recommend Tony to anyone for any contracting work but to those with the tough job who want top quality at a great value. Tony is your only answer. Ask Tony for a walk through of our attic renovation to check out his work. Ryder and Shayne Russell. Kalamazoo

We are very pleased with the repair work that Tom and crew from Handyman Connection of Grand Rapids provided. We needed a 9 foot piece of aluminum siding replaced on the upper section of our house. The tricky thing about this repair was that the damaged siding was in a very hard-to-reach spot, immediately above the glass panel ceiling of our 4 Season Room. So what would normally be a pretty straightforward job became much more challenging due simply to accessibility. We found that siding companies generally did not want to offer a realistic repair option. Instead, they wanted to take off the whole section of aluminum siding on that side of the house and replace it all. That is not a practical solution, and the cost would have been ridiculous. When I talked to Tom about options for repairing rather than complete replacement, he was very thoughtful in possible options. After giving it much thought as to how to access the repair location, he came up with an innovative yet simple approach to reaching the damaged siding so he could remove the piece and replace it with a new section. The guys did a fantastic job color matching the new piece to our 20+ year old existing siding. Tom was very skilled in cutting the new piece to match the contour of the existing piece and he got the one new 9 ft. section installed below the remaining pieces, which is pretty tricky with aluminum siding (which doesn’t bend and snap into place in a repair like vinyl does). With the new piece in place, it is virtually undetectable from the old, original pieces! We are completely satisfied with the aesthetics and the new piece is secure – no more having the siding flapping around in the wind! Tom charged a very reasonable price for this repair. We can’t be more happy with our experience with Handyman Connection GR. We highly recommend them for home related repairs. Thanks Tom!

Matthew is very pleasant, attentive, and concerned with the needs of the customer. I asked him to repair a floor that was buckling and was preventing the functionality of the door. He was on site quickly and did a good job.

Brian and his team were wonderful. They came in 1/3 of the cost of two of those big box stores. The fence is laser straight.. he finished the job in one day. I was very pleased. Sence then I hired Brian to put in a deck for us which is now completed. He works fast, his prices are very fare. I will definitely hire him again. Thanks again
