I am a single woman home owner. I needed to find a handyman that I could call for the work around the house that I couldn't (or didn't) want to do. I contacted Mike and he was out the next day to quote the job. It was done a few days later at a very affordable price. Mike is honest and does quality work! I will call him in the future when I need a handy man! I highly recommend him!!!

He's more of a handyman than a full service plumber (for example, he doesn't do clogged drains). But he was prompt, friendly and capable.

Handyman Tom expanded my storage capability by strategizing, designing, and building a storage shed in my backyard. I was mostly hands off during this project and let him run with it. I got a sturdy, probably hurricane-proof shed for much less than the price of an "off the shelf" brand. And it's custom. The inside of the shed features custom shelves that maximize my storage capacity. My once packed garage only takes up about half of the storage space in the shed. I love working with Tom on these projects because he combines quality, durability, and creativity into all of his projects. I love seeing what Tom comes up with next. Feel free to ask Tom for my email/phone number if you want to ask me any questions. Thanks again Tom, Chris

Alex responded for a post I made looking for an electrician to install 4 recessed lights to replace some outdated light fixtures in my new home. He arrived as scheduled to fully assess the job and confirm his quote. He also suggested that I update the other 30+ recessed lights in my home to LED and directed to inexpensive bulk pricing on Amazon. We scheduled the job for the following week. Alex arrived with his son/assistant as scheduled and not only installed the 4 recessed lights, but corrected a switch malfunction and inserted the LED bulbs that I purchased. Everything looks and works great! I will be calling Alex for additional projects in the near future.

Couldn't be more pleased. I had 2 ceiling fans put in and Mr Moon came in very profession and put both fans up in a very timely manner. Did a great job on putting the fans up. He showed up on time and I feel the cost of the job was very reasonable in fact i was expecting to pay more.. I will be calling Moons Painting and Handyman in the near future for other projects.

Couldn’t be happier! After working with Joe only one time, we’ve already decided he’s our guy for our next project. He was responsive and kept communication open and clear while we figured out some of the issues with the project. He was super respectful and made sure the job was done right. We needed to install a new dryer but had an old dodgy copper line that extended almost 20 ft. He installed all new pipe to extend over to where the dryer was and hooked everything up for us. He did a thorough job and we feel much safer now! Definitely a dependable Handyman.

Kai provided extraordinary handyman services for our home. We are in the middle of moving and need a professional to assist. The handyman service we originally hired the week before cancelled on us at the last minute. Desperate to get these todo items off my list I revisited my vendors from Thumbtack after 10:30pm. Within an hour, Kai was scheduled for the next morning. Needless to say, Kai was outstanding and completed my tasks in a little over an hour. ... I will be hiring him again to assist with installing and fixing things at our new home. He was: - Prompt and professional - Great value - Confident - Awesome work quality (and tidy) Thank you KK Remodeling! 😃

Bob assessed the job of replacing some aluminum siding, repairing sagging gutters, and reinstalled siding that been installed incorrectly. I did not know that but Bob explained what the prior company had done and how it was wrong and he fixed it. The price was reasonable and the work was first class. I will use BD Handyman again when the need arises. Al D. Canton, MI

Joe is very reliable and did a great job adding shelves to my garage. I was very happy with the outcome. Not only that but he is very honest when it came to materials needed for the garage shelves. He showed me a receipt of all items purchased. That is hard to find nowadays as most people feel that you should trust them. I actually had him come back for a paint job and will definitely use him in the future for other things I have planned. He and his assistant are very easy person to work with and so nice. Joe really cares about the work that he does.

I was a bit sceptical hiring a handyman because I've had pretty bad experiences in the past. However, his services were superb! He was very flexible, courteous and punctual with his work and time. I am a person of many questions, all of which he could answer so he is definitely knowledgable. I would highly recommend Hosey Handyman Services.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.
