Ryan was hired to paint my townhome's living room, hallway, entryway, office and master bedroom and quoted me a reasonable price of $1,450. While the appearance of the finished work is good, the drama and deception that accompanied working with Ryan was not. There are three things that you need to be aware of before you decide to engage Schwartz and Sons, LLC. If you are flexible on these things, then Ryan is your man. 1. Your written, detailed estimate is likely not going to be your final cost. The office in my home had a dark eggplant faux finish and I had asked him to paint over it with a bright, summer squash, golden yellow. At the estimate, he saw my old/new color choices and quoted a price. On the day of painting edgings/trim, (a tedious task requiring precision and completed beautifully by Ryan's wife, Heidi), Ryan told me the new color was not covering the old with only two coats and a third coat of paint was required and would cost me an additional $100. I initially agreed but the next day asked him to waive that fee because as a professional, he saw the two colors on the day of the estimate and should have calculated that he'd need to use a primer. He called me at work very angry and indignant -- by his definition, a primer is only used to seal a wall -- I listened while he ranted (drama) then agreed I'd pay his up-charge, thankful that the room was very small. 2. Ryan only uses Hirshfield's paint -- if you request a different brand (i.e., Valspar) he will agree to use Valspar, and state several times Valspar's name, in regards to the completed job, but he will still use Hirshfield's brand paint. Personally, I prefer integrity to deception in an independent contractor I choose to hire for a job in my home. During the estimate, I had specifically stated that I did not want Hirshfield's brand paint because the quality is poor and was chipping off the master bedroom walls. So Ryan never told me he only uses Hirshfield's. 3. You must anticipate that start and end dates will be flexible because any outdoor job Ryan has booked prior to yours may delay your job by a few days due to weather. Understandable; but if you have a tight schedule, find a different contractor. Overall, I am happy with the final look, but already regretting the quality of the materials and the dishonesty and drama that went along with it. I would not hire Schwartz and Sons again.Oct 6, 2014VerifiedSchwartz and Sons, LLC.'s reply
We are deeply sorry that you werent completely satisfied with the work on your home. It was never our intention to make you feel deceived or cheated in any way. Perhaps the following explanation can help put your mind to ease: 1. Some colors, particularly those in the neutral or ultra-deep base, will require more than 2 coats especially in cases where the original color is dark or otherwise difficult to cover. It is impossible to be 100% certain of coverage until the first day when we perform an initial test to ensure coverage. The paint used for your neutral base color (spring squash), Benjamin Moores Aura, is currently the highest rated paint in the United States. Benjamin Moore Aura is also considered a self-priming product, because it contains primer in it. This product retails for around $80 per gallon. In cases where the paint does not pass our initial coverage tests and an unexpected coat becomes required, we feel it fair that the customer pays the extra cost of materials while we absorb the labor costs. 2. We exclusively use paint products from Hirschfields and never agree to use products from different suppliers. We make no attempt to hide the fact that we buy our products from Hirschfields. Our shirts even say Hirschfields on them. We prefer Hirschfields products to those of any other local supplier and do not consider them to be of poor quality. In addition to Hirschfields house brand they also carry Benjamin Moore, Devoe, Devine, Ralph Lauren, and Valspar along with many others as described on their website (www.hirshfields.com). Perhaps the reason the previous coating was chipping was because it was not properly applied. For example, sanding a wall before coating it provides a mechanical bond by scuffing up the micro surfaces of the previous coating, the paint penetrates the original substrate surface resulting in mechanical interlocking once it dries. 3. Yes, we are sometimes at the mercy of the weather. If we have an exterior project booked before yours, we are obligated to finish that one prior to starting yours. Sometimes bad weather pushes our schedule back. However, the customer is always informed immediately whenever this is the case. As one might expect, this is not an issue during the winter.

Great job pressure washing a (very) dirty stucco house. Probably required more hours than originally scoped, but went extra mile to make sure everything was clean. Recommended.May 29, 2018Verified

- What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)? My pricing system isnt too complicated. All of my pricing is price per square foot or price per lineal foot. However, its still has a base of how long it takes and how much material is used. But, breaking it down to the square foot or the lineal foot allows me to provide the customer with an extremely accurate price that is competitive with other painters.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work? The best thing a painter can do to continue their educational process is to stay knowledgeable of the current products and application techniques. The best way to do this is by going to pro shows and talking with product representatives. I also find that forming a close nit community with your fellow painters helps a lot.
